gardengate facility expansion project
Sponsorship PackageA time for growthThe Gardengate Horticulture Program is a space of healing and recovery for people living with addictions and/or mental health conditions, focusing on the development of self confidence, community connectedness, independence and wellness. It is operated by Open Door Group (ODG), a non-profit registered charity established in 1976 built on the fundamental belief that everyone has the ability to succeed.
Through activities in the garden, participants work towards personal goals such as healthy eating and active living. We provide vocational rehabilitation and pre-employment training.
The time has come for us to expand our Gardengate facility, which will allow us to help even more British Columbians reach their full potential. We’re excited to launch our first ever fundraising campaign, with the goal of reaching $500,000 by May 2020.
We can make it happen with your support.

Last year alone, 55 Gardengate participants harvested 22,000lbs of produce. 85% was donated to the local community via organizations such as the Kamloops Food Bank and the Salvation Army.

Project Timeline
“I came to Gardengate with hidden skills but they started to come back to the forefront. It’s helped me to appreciate life more.”
– JF, Gardengate participant
“One of my favourite things about
Gardengate is being accepted
for who I am. It gets me out of the
house and I’m learning new ways
of taking care of my health.”
– GG, Gardengate participant
“Gardengate has brought out the
best in me. It’s a place of wellness
where I can use my skills and
learn new ones. I’ve grown leaps
and bounds.”
– ML, Gardengate participant
Gardengate clocked up an impressive 5,700 volunteer hours during 2018/19.
In any given year, 1 in 5 people in Canada will personally experience a mental health problem.
Over 1,000 people people have completed the program since 2000.

Our VisionSince Gardengate’s inception in 2000, we have been operating out of a 700ft space, half of which is not heated, and unusable during the chilly winter months. Over the years, our program has grown but our space has not. Just as plants need repotting in order to thrive, we too need room to grow!
Our proposed new facility, equipped with a fully functioning commercial kitchen will allow us to serve more participants and expand the range of skills we help nurture, such as cooking, carpentry, sales, marketing, and machine maintenance.
Community ImpactPersonal wellness and community wellness go hand in hand. Participants leave Gardengate with improved self esteem, greater self sufficiency, and vocational skills that prepare them to enter (or re-enter) the workforce. Everything they work towards here at Gardengate has a positive knock-on effect for the Kamloops community. From our seasonal plant sales, to our commitment to sustainable food security, to our partnerships with local schools and employers, Gardengate is an essential part of the Kamloops community. With your help, our new facility will create an even greater impact.
