The Project After identifying a 13,000sqft 2 unit in a neighbouring Local Authority, they were granted change of use planning. The club became a company limited by guarantee with charitable status to widen their access to grant funding. Inspired Facility funding was successfully applied for in 2012 and a lease of seven years secured with a phased increase for the first three years. The conversion project took place is phases with the priority being the training area. Once this was complete parents helped to convert the viewing area whilst children trained in the gymnasium. In 2013 the Asda foundation donated £15,000 for a sprung floor. The club’s membership dropped from 70 to 30. They wanted to grow their members and be able offer a more diverse range of activities. They decided that a conversion project could be attainable and started to look for appropriate units to lease. Impact• Increase from 30 members to 400 in two and a half years. • Added women’s artistic competitive section, TeamGym and My Club. • Extended provision in general gymnastics, acro and tumbling. • Produced a British Champion in tumbling. • Grown MyLeadership Academy, now led by a former leader. • Leaders organise two inhouse competitions per year. • Ex-gymnast enrolled onto apprenticeship scheme looking at administration and coaching. • Workforce has grown from 4 to 21 coaches and trainee coaches. • Able to offer opportunities to community groups including special schools members of which are entering the disability schools acro competition.

Structural alterations £36,000 – The building was an open shell so walls needed building and structural supports modifying. A viewing area, two offices, toilets and play room all needed installing.

Electrics and heating *£14,000 – The building needed re-wiring and electric heaters installing due to no gas supply being present. *£7,000 underspend on works redirected to conference room.

Conference room £7,000 – Installation of conference room to host meetings and courses.

Equipment £21,600 – £15,000 for sprung floor, £6,600 on women’s artistic, tumbling and preschool apparatus.

The futureThe club want to change their heating from electric to gas due to high utility bills. They’re also changing the lighting to more efficient LED lighting and looking at insulating the gymnasium to make it more energy efficient. They want to engage more user groups including secondary schools.

Top tips

• Ask other clubs for site visits. You will have a better idea of project timescales including change of use and detailed costs. You can also learn a lot about different equipment layouts.

• Investigate grant application timescales, these don’t happen in weeks. Make sure you understand the administration needed behind a grant application.

• Don’t try to do everything yourself, delegate. Engage parents. Make parents part of your club and they will give you time and put in effort which is greatly received.
