The San Francisco based start-up UBER is alleviating the taxi drive industry. Founded in 2009, the taxi app is

now available in fifty cities worldwide.Key value is the facilitating part of it: by use of the

application, UBER seamlessly connects passengers to drivers by not only by making cities more accessible, but

more importantly, by taking out all the extra links and replacing it with intuitive technology.

The simplicity of the app makes the service very practical and useful. A smooth taxi ride is now literally just a few

screentaps away.

Just as Spotify has changed the way we listen to music, Netflix might just do the same for the television

landscape. The pay-per-month-streaming-service offers unlimited access and HD views for a small amount of

money. Not too long ago, this concept of letting customers pay

for content was deemed the unthinkable. Now, initiatives with a progressive (on-demand) subscription model are

becoming increasing popular and even revolutionizing segments such as the journalistic field. With the help of

15,000 newly found members, Dutch journalistic start-up The Correspondent (De Correspondent) reached its

crowdfunding goals in just eight days. As for Netflix, the company has also teamed up with

Khan Academy to bring free education to those in need and who cannot afford it. Now that is solving

real problems. Yet, in this age of information overload, it is vital to

emphasize that quality above all, remains key.

Designer Dave Hakkens had a vision. What if we could customize our phones to our own satisfaction and

needs? Why not use Phonebloks that we can replace and recycle, instead of manufacturing traditional one-piece-phones? The video explaining Hakkens’ vision

became an instant Internet hit. Ultimately, Motorola who had also been working on a similar idea, purchased his

Phonebloks concept. The concept is great in many ways. Besides the fact that

it is much more sustainable, it is also considered Cool because of the personalization aspect and the simplicity

of it: a key value of Facilitate My Life.

Thanks to British multinational Tesco, shopping for groceries has become so much more easy. Through the

use of barcodes, the virtual supermarket – in this case in a South Korean subway station - has actually become a reality. As shoppers can see the items as if they were in

a customary grocery store, the barcodes of the products can be scanned with your cell phone (after downloading

the adjacent app, that is). This smartphone-friendly online shopping system isn’t

just convenient for customers, it’s also a much more efficient method for the food commerce retailers.

Tesco is currently working on a Minority Report style like means of advertising, so we can expect more similar

novelties in the near future.

Then there are two U.S based start-ups, Square and Only Coin, that are trying to revolutionize the way we

pay. Square provides hard- and software that turns your

iPhone or iPad into a payment system, making it possible to swipe your bankcard or credit card through

your phone.Only Coin aims to replace all credit cards with just one smart card. As a nice feature that is connected to your phone, an alarm goes off when Only Coin is separated

from your phone. Both Square and Coin will help you transform your

smartphone (or any portable device for that matter) into the centrepiece of your life, catering your every need.
