1. After you log in to your Facebook account, press the “Facebook” icon in the upper left hand corner of the screen to take you to home base.

2. From this page, click on the word “Lists” (see arrow).

3. Here, you will see several lists Facebook automatically created for you. You can choose to use one of these lists, or create a new one. We are going to create a new list just for “Brown School Community”. To do this, press “Create List” (see arrow).

Section A In this section you will learn how to set up a privacy list and use that privacy list to control what YOU share with others.

  4. This box should appear. Here you will type the name of your new list.

5. For ease, we will name our list “Brown School Community” because everyone on this list will be from the Brown School.

6. After you type the name, press “Create”.

7. If done correctly, you should see this screen. Now lets add friends. Just press “Add Friends” (see arrow).

Page 4: Facebook Privacy How-To

8. This screen will pop up – these are all your current friends. You can choose to search for someone by typing in a name OR by scrolling down your friend list.

9. To add someone to the list, just click on their image. The box will have a blue checkmark, that means they have successfully been added to our “Brown School Community” list. (see arrow).

10. After you have added everyone, press “Done”.

Page 5: Facebook Privacy How-To

11. After adding your friends to the list, you will be taken back to this page. What you are seeing is the news feed from anyone on your “Brown School Community” list (see circle). For instance, in this example, we added Aaron Jennings. Because I am only viewing the news feed from the “Brown School Community”, his news is the only news I see. If I were to add more people to my list, my news feed would have more variety.

12. To adjust our privacy settings with our new list, navigate to your profile (press the icon of your face/name in the upper right hand corner).

13. In this example, we’re going to adjust who can see where we work. To do this, press “About” on the profile page (see arrow).

14. To adjust privacy settings for “Work and Education”, press the “Edit” button (see arrow).

15. From here, you need to look for this image: This image is the key to adjusting your privacy settings.

16. Click on the image to adjust privacy settings. For this example, we want to press “Custom”.

17. The “Custom Privacy” pop up will appear. Here, we can make this visible to our friends, but exclude anyone we want. We will exclude everyone from the “Brown School Community” by typing in the name in the “Hide this from” section.

18. If done correctly, it should appear like this box. Press “Save Changes”.

19. To check and see if it looks correct, navigate back to your profile (press the icon of your face/name in the upper right hand corner).

20. Press the tool button (see arrow).

 21. From the drop down of

the tool button, press “View As”

22. At the top of the screen, type in a name that is on your “Brown School Community” list. In this example, we will see what our timeline looks like to Aaron Jennings.

23. We are now viewing the profile as Aaron Jennings would view it. As you can see, the place of employment is no longer visible since we excluded the “Brown School Community” from seeing it.

24. This process works exactly the same for photo albums, individual timeline posts, etc. Just remember to navigate to the area you want to hide, click edit and set the privacy settings to custom.

 1. After you log in to your

Facebook account, press the “Facebook” icon in the upper left hand corner of the screen to take you to home base.

2. From this page, click on the down arrow right next to “Home” in the upper right hand corner (see arrow).

3. In the drop down menu, choose “Privacy Settings”.

4. From this page, you can control how others connect with you. In this example, we will limit our “Brown School Community” list from seeing what others post on our timeline (formerly known as your “wall”).

5. Click on “Edit Settings” next to “How You Connect” (see arrow).

Section B In this section you will learn how to use your privacy list from Section A to control what OTHERS share about you.

Page 10: Facebook Privacy How-To

 6. From the “How You

Connect” pop up window, you can control the various ways you connect with people. From this screen, click in the box to the right of the description (see arrow).

7. From the drop down menu, choose “Custom”.

8. The “Custom Privacy” pop up will appear. Here, we can make this visible to our friends, but exclude anyone we want. We will exclude everyone from the “Brown School Community” by typing in the name in the “Hide this from” section.

9. Now, anyone on the “Brown School Community” list WILL NOT be able to see posts by others on our timeline.

10. Explore the other areas (How Tags Work, etc.) and use the same process to control your privacy.
