Fabric Fibers & Types

Wool comes from animal fur.

The fur fibers are then wound into thread or yarn.

The yarn or thread is then woven or knitted into fabric.

Silk comes from a silkworm’s cocoon.

The silkworm spins a cocoon out of thread.

The silk threads are then used to make silk fabric.

Cotton comes from the seeds of cotton bushes.

A cotton gin is used to remove the small seeds from the

cotton fibers.

Flax is made from the stem of a plant.

These pieces are made of

flax that is spun into thread that is then made

into cloth.

Ramie is another fiber that comes from plants.

The ramie fibers are made into yarn and thread.

The ramie yarn and thread is used to make towels and clothing.

Jute is also another fiber that comes from plants.

Jute fibers are then extracted by hand from the plants.

Jute is a rough fiber used to make bags to hold sugar and coffee and for carpet backing.
