STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION FEBRUAY 22, 2015 Lent is upon us. This season of intense fasting and prayer offers us an opportunity to focus on our sinful nature and the wonder of Christ’s saving power in a particularly poignant way. As Jesus tells us in the gospel reading today, we are to “repent and believe in the gospel.” But doing so involves much more than a simple passive belief. In fact, for Christian disciples, this belief in the gospel necessitates a life actively

lived for the sake of the gospel, a life lived in immigration of Jesus who gave himself up for death for the sake of others. This does not mean that we will all be called to die a martyr’s death. But our lives ought to be lived out for others. As stewards, we ought to give ourselves in loving service for others — at home, in our parishes, at work, at school and elsewhere. The life of a Christian disciple, as Christ so radically shows us, is a life of self-giving in love. It sounds like a lot of work, and rightly so. Just look at the cross. It is far from easy. But, then, focus on the resurrection. Christ suffered the most unthinkable agony, but in his resurrection he experienced the most tremendous victory. That is what we live for. We give of ourselves like Christ did, knowing that we look forward to the glory of eternal life. The reward of a self-giving Christian steward far surpasses the effort it takes to live this way; it far surpasses any hardships we experience along the way. So, we live for others and we call others to do the same, proclaiming the good news that Christ has come to save. All we need to do is repent and believe. Then, on Easter morning, we celebrate together the joy of the resurrection and we look forward to the day when we run out to meet the Lord together with all the angels and saints. What a glorious gospel we proclaim! Please don’t forget to return your 2015 CSA commitment card. The parish and the Bishop rely upon the support of every one of us to carry out the ministry of Jesus Christ and His Disciples. Each of us can make a positive difference.

The Columbiettes will be sponsoring their annual blood drive on March 8th from 9am—1:30pm. They will be scheduling donations in the parish center after ALL Masses this weekend February 22nd and next March 1st. We hope to meet, if not exceed, last year’s donations of 73 units. If you are in reasona-bly good health, and meet the requirements, please consider donating. When you donate blood, you will be doing one of the

most amazing things – “saving a life” YES, I CAN!

FREE TAX PREPARATION! Beginning February 2, 2015 and continuing through April 15, St Sylvester Catholic Church in Gulf Breeze will again be partnering with United Way of Escambia to offer free tax preparation for taxpayers in the parish and in the Navarre/Midway/Tiger area. IRS Trained and Certified volunteer tax preparers will be available M-T-W in the Activity Center. We can do taxes in both English and Spanish. Hours of operation will be 10AM to 4PM each day. THE MEANING OF OUR BAPTISM Lent is the time of year that we devote to

scrutinizing our lives in the light of our baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus. Today's readings are a nice shorthand

catechism of what our baptized lives mean. As Noah passed through the waters of the flood to

a covenant with God, so did we enter into a covenant, a promised relationship with God through our baptism. The psalm reminds us that if we truly keep the covenant, the way of

life God expects us to follow will not be a burden, but a source of love and truth. Peter's

letter gives one explanation of what our baptism means: it is an appeal that we make to God for a clear conscience. How do we obtain this clear

conscience? The words that Jesus proclaims immediately following his temptation

show us the way: "Repent and believe in the gospel." It might be a good spiritual exercise to keep these readings before us throughout the

entire season of Lent, a means to help us return to a life lived in our baptismal promises.
