Pastor’s Notes

Greetings,

This weekend we celebrate the end of the Christ-

mas season. It seems almost too short considering the

weeks of preparation that went into getting ready for

Christmas, but next week we return to ordinary time. I

would again like to remind everyone that ordinary time

will be short this year. It will consist of the month of

January and half of February. On February 14th along

with Saint Valentine's Day we also celebrate Ash

Wednesday.

I will start by inviting those of you who have palm

branches left over from last Easter to please bring

them. Next week we will set up a basket where they may

be deposited to be burned for Ash Wednesday.

I would also like to remind everyone of the fish

fries which begin Friday February 16th. We will also

soon be having sign-up sheets for the various duties to

be done on Friday. Please be generous with your time.

May God bless you all.

Fr. Jim Holbrook

PLEASE SAVE THE DATE- Jan. 19th, 2018

According to the “Human Trafficking Task Force”, St. Louis is a hotspot for human trafficking. Missouri is re-sponding through legislation, law enforcement and grass-roots organizations that work to combat and raise aware-ness about trafficking. On January 19th at New Beginnings Lutheran Church in Pacific, we will be hosting a “Forum on Human Traffick-ing” beginning at 7:00pm. There, attendees will hear from authorities on the subject and learn what can be done to make a difference locally. We hope you will join us on Janu-ary 19th to be a part of what is shaping up to be a very powerful evening in Pacific. If we can help just one victim to become free of their captor and the horrors they are forced to endure, this evening will have been worthwhile! As a community leader, we are contacting you to help us get the word out so that folks interested in attending can make plans to be there. Please share with any other per-son you feel would like to know. Thank you for helping spread the word. Make it a great day! Alderman Steve Myers 314-974-7446

DEACON’S CORNER

Q. Deacon Mike, why do Catholics cross themselves on

their foreheads, lips and their hearts before the gospel at

Mass?

A. This answer was given more fully by Fr. John Mayo in

the St. Louis Review (Dec. 4-10, 2017). The sign of the

cross actually originates in the Old Testament. In the book

of Ezekiel, the Babylonians were threatening to conquer

Jerusalem. God instructs a man with a writing tablet to go

throughout the city and mark those who have persevered in

their faith with the sign of ‘tau’. This letter looks like a ‘T’

which, in turn, looks like a cross. It should come as no sur-

prise that Christians quickly adopted the sign of the cross

as the sign that would mark them as followers of Christ.

The first reference to the sign of the cross is from the

early Christian writer Tertullian, who encourages all Chris-

tians to make the sign of the cross on their forehead, cit-

ing such an action as tradition. Later, St. Cyril of Jerusa-

lem urged Christians to not be ashamed of the sign of the

cross because the demons tremble at its sight. The mod-

ern signing of the cross on the forehead, lips and breast

came along in the 11th century. So, to sign ourselves is to

seal the Word of God in our minds, our lips and in our

hearts. To sign ourselves on the forehead means that we

must believe in the Word of the Gospel. The sign of the

cross on our lips means that we must preach the Gospel

with our words. The sign upon our breast means that we

must treasure the Word of the Gospel in our hearts. Dea-

con Mike can be reached at [email protected].

“St. Bridget of Kildare Students

Learn Lessons at the Cinema”

Recently, Hollywood released two movies that promote virtue and the real meaning of Christmas. Students in grades 5-8 saw “Wonder”; a movie that promotes kindness and re-maining true to yourself. Students read the book, Wonder, by Raquel Jaranillo, before viewing the movie. Since the mov-ie, students have dedicated themselves to kindness by writing a personal precept, complimenting classmates, and reflect-ing. An email of compliment from Cinema 1 Plus in Washington states “All your kiddos were very polite… a wonderful reflec-tion of their parents and teachers.” Students in 1st-4th grade viewed a movie entitled “The Star”. It represents the birth of Jesus with humor and en-tertainment for the whole family. Once again, the our stu-dents received a compliment from the owner of Great 8 Cine-ma in Union. In a phone call after the visit, he raved that our students were the best group of students they have ever had visit the theater for a field trip. Wow, great movies, great kids and great compliments truly show the greater community the treasures of SBK stu-dents.
