Keeping Your Neighborhood CleanGusty Santa Ana winds can stir up problems for the collection of neighborhood trash and recyclables. Containers are frequently blown over and the materials end up strewn throughout nearby streets. You can help your neighborhood clean on windy days by doing the following:

1. Avoid placing trash barrels out on windy days.2. Be sure to place your trash into a large trash bag and tie it closed before placing in the barrel.3. Bag any excess trash and recyclables that do not fit in your barrel.

Accumulated bags will be removed by your waste hauler on the next scheduled collection day.

Have you heard of Senate Bill 1383?Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383), establishes requirements for emissions reduction targets in effort to reduce emissions of short-lived climate pollutants. In order to do this, many waste stream items must be reduced from the landfill, such as organic waste. Organic waste includes food and landscape waste. Not only does this greatly affect all businesses in California, but all residents as well. California generates approximately 20-23 million tons of organic waste each year.

You can do your part in reducing organic waste from the landfill by:• Practice Smart Food Shopping, by sticking to your shopping list, only buy what you need, store food items properly to avoid food going bad.• Eat leftovers first, before preparing a new meal.• Make your own vermicompost bin at home with your food scraps.• Donate edible food to your local church or food pantry.

California throws away 5.6 million tons of food waste every year.

Let’s feed people not landfills. For more information please visit: https://www.calrecycle.ca.gov/climate/slcp
