“THE DIGNITY of those en-slaved women is not for sale.”

So says Cllr Gary Gannon(Soc Dem, North Inner City) toDublin City managers intent onselling the northside’s last sur-viving Magdalen Laundry.

Cllr Gannon described theentire Seán MacDermott Streetbuilding as a “sacred shrine” tothose who had, for over 150years, been physically, emotion-ally and financially abused byChurch and state.

Standing in the shadows ofthis last remaining penal laun-dry (active until 1995), theCouncillor said he had the votesto kill a City management bid tosell it to Japanese budget chainToyoko Inn.

“There’s such a thing as theethics of memory,” the Council-lor said, looking up at the build-ing which, he said, had hauntedhis youth in the inner city. It isjust a few yards east of O’Con-nell Street.

“As a nation, we are definedby what we choose to commem-orate — but also by how wechoose to commemorate it.”

hotelCity Council managers want

that memory to be simply aspace within a Toyoko Inn. Sur-prisingly, those managers listedthe site with New York–based es-tate agents Cushman & Wake-

field months before the legally-required Councillors’ vote. Asa result, C&W received theToyoko offer.

Yet under Section 83, sub-section 1, paragraph (b) of theLocal Government Act of 1943:

“…the local authority [asCouncillors] may resolve thatthe disposal shall not be car-ried out or that it shall be car-ried out in accordance withterms specified in the resolu-tion.” [Emphasis added.]

The Councillors’ vote — tosell or not to sell — is set totake place just as this editionhits the streets on Thursday,

September 13.Based on reliable Local

News sources, the sale toTokoyo Inns is likely to be de-feated by a margin of two toone.

The movement for a propermemorial has been growingsince the publication of JusticeJohn Quirke’s 2013 MagdalenCommission Report.

All the advocate groupsquoted in the document urgedthe creation of some form ofmemorial garden or monu-ment.

Japanese budget B+Bchain:

“The moneywould be pumpedinto infrastructure, half of it ring-fencedfor Seán MacDermottStreet area.”

scathiNgCllr Gannon is

scathing about this“afterthought” ap-proach honouring thememory of thewomen and girls whoscrubbed sheets, un-paid, in the MagdalenLaundry.

“There’s an ob-scene irony in thishotel idea,” he fumes.

He explained thatthe Toyoko Inn chainwas notorious for hir-ing many disadvan-taged women andpaying them mini-mum wage:

“Now they want tohonour one group ofexploited women bypossibly exploitinganother group!”

To back his cam-paign for a pure-and-simple memorial, hecites two nearby ex-amples: Moore Street,a work-in-progress;and the already-suc-cessful KilmainhamGaol.

“The relatives ofthe 1916 leaders werehorrified when theCity, and the ArtsMinister, wanted tomake the MooreStreet battlefield me-morial part of aPaddy-Power-and-Burger-King mini-mall,” Cllr Gannonrecalled.

“They were rightto fight for somethingmore dignified.”

As for the job-cre-ation carrot, he isequally scathing:

“One, those hotelchains have zerotrack record for hiringlocally, and if they doin this case, it will beat minimum wage.”

Secondly, hepoints out, stand-alone “dark tourism”sites pay for them-selves, as in the caseof Kilmainham Gaol. It’s doing well, and ina far-lower-traffic lo-cation in Dublin 8.

kilmaiNhamInternational visi-

tors, he points out, have shown that theyrespect cultures thatmemorialise theirmistakes and theirtragedies:

“That’s true ofmassive horrors suchas Auschwitz, and

local sorrows such asthe execution of the1916 leaders in Kil-mainham.”

The resulting 1916museum, he argues,

is both respectfuland, as it happens, profitable:

“You can actuallysee the results, eco-nomically. That entire

area — KilmainhamLane, Mount Brownand Inchicore Road—used to be run-downbut has since beentransformed.”

Kilmainham GaolMuseum, he says, hascreated dozens of per-manent, well-payingjobs, inside and out-side its walls.

Others outsideDublin agree. Cam-paigners in Sligo havejust announced a bidto turn their long-shuttered jail into amuseum. Such ef-forts, Gannon says,

can honour the deadwhile educating —and warning — theliving.

Meanwhile, LocalNews contacted Cush-man & Wakefieldwhose FOR SALEsigns appear at thesite. They did not re-turn our calls.

We also contactedthe City’s PropertyDisposals division.Their Executive Man-ager Paul Clegg wasnot available.

With a vote on thematter imminent, more than the Mag-dalen site is at stake, says Cllr Gannon:

“Is the Local Gov-ernment Act 1946 [re-quiring councillors’assent for a disposal]to be respected?” If so,

he says, City manage-ment should not haveallowed those FORSALE signs.

Gannon notes thathe and his fellow-campaigners wouldhave to win such avote every time theCity proposed a prop-erty sale. The City, onthe other hand, wouldonly have to win once.

“We have 10,000signatures saying thatthese women deserveto be respected andremembered,” henoted.

our “arbeit machtFrei”

He looked up atthe metalwork archinscription above the

Magdalen entrance:“That hideous

message, with itsboasts of ‘Charity’ and‘Refuge’, is Dublin’sArbeit Macht Frei.”

This is a referenceto the notorious signabove the entrance toseveral WWII concen-tration camps, mostnotably Auschwitz. These read, in Ger-man, Work Will MakeYou Free.

The great Jewishriposte to that ap-palling message mightbe the very inscriptionto dominate a futureMagdalen Memorial— perhaps even in thelanguage in which itwas originally written:םלועל אל דועOr, in English:

THE GOOD news isthat Dublin doesn’thave a housingproblem. The bad news is

that quite a few peo-ple are determinedto create one. This became clear

when Local Newsvisited O’DevaneyGardens, just northeast of Phoenix Park, not far from Smith-field.The building of a

new, 600-unit com-plex here was“launched”, at a cer-emonial sod-turningon July 4 of this year.This was attendedby both Housing

ROAD UP: a new road-straightening effort (blue linereplaced with orange) is all that’s planned for the sur-rounding 7½ acres (3 hectares) in fields (1) and (2).Used for housing, that land could quadruple the am-bition of (3), the proposed 600-unit O’Devaney project

HOLY SHOW: progress since the sod was turned

Minister EoghanMurphy and to showthat, this time, every-one was serious, Fi-nance MinisterPaschal Donohoe.Meanwhile O’De-

vaney has rubble butno rentals, diggersbut no builders, demolition but norenovation.

Nice aNd slowAnd when we say,

“demolition”, this isdemolition, Dublin-style. None of yourshowy Las Vegas ef-forts: you know, where the AladdinHotel implodes in1998, in five secondsflat, the cheers last-ing for fifty timeslonger than the job.

Here we takethings nice and slow:a digger, but no dy-namite.So far, in the 10

weeks since sod wasturned, two of thefour remainingblocks have been de-molished. Rubblesurrounds the re-maining two, withevery expectationthat, any day now, they too will be gen-tly eased to theground. But there’s an-

other puzzle to addto the slo-mo demo-litions skills of ourCity Bosses and theircontractors. Here, in Dublin 7,

in the otherwisedensely built retail-and-residential area

— in what is suppos-edly the most land-starved part of theentire country —there is land, landand still more land.Interestingly, the

little patch of turf onwhich the last re-maining O’Devaneyblocks are standingcomes to a merehalf-a-hectare (lessthan an acre), tops.(Counting the build-ings proper but notthe courtyard in be-tween, it’s even less.)

There is more thanseven times thatacreage, all going towaste, within astone’s throw of thosesoon-to-be-demol-ished buildings.

7½ acresOur map makes

this clear: the oldbuildings werebounded by O’De-vaney Gardens to thenorth and west, byhospital grounds tothe west, and byMontpelier Gardensto the south.Just to their north

is a football pitch.North again, andalso slightly to thewest, we count atotal of about 7½ un-encumbered acres. There’s far more ifyou count littlestrips, like those ad-jacent to the hospi-

tal, and the dividingroads between allexisting fields. What to do with

all that lovely land?Of course! Build a

road!Not that there isn’t

a perfectly goodroad there already, ofcourse.“O’Devaney Gar-

dens”, in fact, is thename of that road aswell as the originalbuildings. The roadlooked fine to us,and hardly in needof replacement. Andeven at rush hour itwas not exactlyclogged: home-going cars filtered

Pharmacists’ advice on treating Head Lice

WITH THE new school year fastapproaching pharmacists are urg-ing parents and guardians to act toprevent the spread of head lice. Itis estimated that 1 in 10 childrensuffer from head lice at any onetime, with 80% of head lice infes-tations occurring in children be-tween the ages of four and 16.According to the Irish PharmacyUnion (IPU) all children should bescreened for head lice once a weekwhen they return to school.Caitriona O’ Riordan, Pharma-

cist and member of the ExecutiveCommittee of the Irish PharmacyUnion said, “There is no way tocompletely eliminate the risks ofhead lice but identifying an infec-tion early will make treating it fareasier. This will also help preventthe spread of infection throughyour family, or amongst schoolfriends. Our advice to parents is tocheck their children’s hair regu-larly, ideally once a week.“If an infection is detected it is

important to start treatment assoon as possible, lice are a normalpart of life and are nothing to beembarrassed about. There are sev-eral treatment options available, and you should seek advice fromyour pharmacist about which isthe most appropriate for yourchild. This is particularly impor-tant for any child suffering fromasthma, allergies or those with apre-existing skin condition, as they

are the most likely to suffer a reac-tion.”According to Ms O’ Riordan, “It

is also extremely important to onlytake treatment if a living, movinglouse is found. Using head liceproducts as a preventative meas-ure is not effective, and unneces-sarily exposes children to theseproducts.”ADVICE FROM PHARMACISTS: Check children’s hair for lice regu-larly, ideally once a week: Use awet comb made for the purpose.Combing through wet hair makesthe process easier. Good light isimportant.Itching and scratching are com-

mon signs of head lice: As well aslive lice, which crawl around thehead, look out for nits. Nits are tinyeggs that may look like dandruffbut cannot be flicked off the hair.Check close to the scalp, behind

the ears, around the nape of theneck, top of the head and underthe fringe.Treat the hair only if live lice or

unhatched eggs are present: Treatthe child as soon as possible. Al-ways ask your pharmacist for ad-vice on the most appropriatetreatment to use.Inform the school, contacts and

friends when your child has headlice: The school can then informother parents that there is an out-break, so everyone can check andtreat their own children.

BAD BOBS TOlkA rovers got their Basketballireland Men’s Division One campaign under-way with a bang on Saturday evening as theywon out in an overtime Dublin derby showdownagainst kuBS, 77-72.

rovers, who are new to the league this sea-son, certainly lay down an early challenge, keeping their cool to overcome kuBS – whohave just come down from the Super league -in a heart-stopping overtime battle.

“it was great to get the season started with awin,” said Tolka head coach, emmet geoghe-gan. “We got into foul trouble early which madeit difficult and kuBS did well to capitalise withtheir American. i was delighted with the re-sponse from the team to keep fighting until theend and bring the game to overtime. Then, wekept our momentum and the atmosphere fromthe crowd gave us a real boost to finish out thegame and win.”

in the other big Dublin derby, DBS Éanna –who have also just come down from the Men’sSuper league – got their season off to a win-ning start with a 62-78 point win on the roadover Abbey Seals Dublin lions.

extinction. Bees are not often thought to be a big con-

tributor to the Irish economy however, it hasrecently been reported they contribute €53million to the Irish Economy each year andnow they are facing extinction in many areasof Ireland. 75% of individuals are aware thatbees are threatened with extinction in Ireland. With this in mind, we conducted a nationallyrepresentative survey on 1,000 adults in Ire-land to discover how they feel about bees andmeasure that have been taken to help save thebees.Recent research by Dublin City University

and Trinity College Dublin has found thatIrish Heather Honey can be compared to NewZealand’s famous Manuka honey. The re-search showed that Irish heather honey hadthe highest TPC (Total Phenolic Content) ofall the Irish Single Origin honeys and had ahigher TPC than Manuka honey. Its more im-portant than ever before to protect our IrishBees.88% of individuals feel that the government

is not doing enough to help save the bees. There have been some efforts by the govern-ment to preserve bees and the Top 3 areaspeople have noted these efforts is the; 1.Planting flowers in parks (57%), 2. Educatingindividuals on the importance of bees andwhat they can do (44%), and 3. Using fewerand less harmful weed killer and pesticides inwhich make bees sick (40%).Some individuals are interested in saving

the bees with 38% of people stating that theyhave personally taken measures to help savethe bees. The Top 3 measures taken by thecommunity are; 1. Planting different flowersthat bees prefer (69%), 2. have been limited with 62% of people not tak-ing measures to save bees and of that percent-age, 18-34 years 68%, 35-54 years 61%, and55+ years 50%. This is showing older groupsare most likely to care for bees. With 87% of people believing bees con-

NLN Student success - even with poor Leaving Cert resultTEN PER CENT ofleaving cert studentslast year failed, andmany could do somuch better with adifferent approach.

The Leaving Certapplied is anotherroute available tostudents that wouldenjoy learning in aless linear way. TheLeaving Cert appliedoffers constant as-sessments andhands on tuition. The Leaving Certifi-cate Applied is a dis-tinct, self-containedLeaving Certificateprogramme. If parents can be-come more open tosupport their childto avail of what kindof education andtraining that mostsuits them. a lot ofpressure can be re-lieved for the youngperson. If a person isunder less pressureto perform academi-cally particularly ifthere is the chal-lenge of a medicalcondition, ASDS,dyslexia, dyspraxiaand learning diffi-culties that wouldhave been identifiedin the school. This iswhere the supportand guidance fromNLN can be so valu-able to young people

at this difficult stage. A Leaving Cert

NationalLearning Networkprovides a range offlexible training pro-grammes and sup-port services forpeople who needspecialist support(job seekers, unem-ployed, people withan illness or disabil-ity) in 50 centresaround the country. The SOLAS & HSEtraining pro-grammes, all ofwhich include workexperience, offer na-tionally recognisedqualifications in-cluding QQI, ECDL,and City and Guilds, ensuring that stu-dents are ready toget a job or go on tofurther education.

Individual Assessment in NLNWhen a person

opts for a trainingprogramme in oneof the NLN Centres,a needs assessmenton that person, andan individual actionplan will be imple-mented. The train-ing that most suitsthe applicant will beidentified with goalsbeing set. This canbe reviewedmonthly with theteam, so any prob-lems will be high-lighted soon. Thisongoing support isin fact the essencethat encapsulates

the philosophy ofNLN.

To instil confi-dence in the traineesand to build on theirinnate natural skillsand further enhancethese, and also help-ing them to learnnew skills and enjoytheir new chal-lenges.

If parents can beaccepting of whatsupports can mosthelp their childrather than beblinded by CAOpoints the NLN cantruly help. SOCIAL DEMOCRATS co-leader RóisínShortall TD has strongly endorsed the callsof women and families affected by the Cer-vicalCheck crisis for swift implementationof the detailed recommendations of theScally report.

Deputy Shortall said: “Since this scandalbroke, women and families affected havesaid they wanted to get to the bottom ofwhat went wrong and why, and Dr Scally’scomprehensive report thankfully answersmany of their questions.“Dr Scally’s inquiry found problems

everywhere he looked, with many indica-tions that the screening programme was‘doomed to fail’ at some point. He chroni-cles the lack of proper governance of thehealth service, a lack of attention to qualityassurances and risk management, and anutter lack of accountability within the HSEand in fact throughout the health system. This is a shocking state of affairs which putsour entire health system to shame.“It is utterly clear that what’s now needed

is swift action to restore full confidence inthe cervical cancer screening programme. For that to happen, there can no delay bythe government in implementing the re-port’s fifty recommendations, whichamount to an entire reboot of how the na-tional screening programme operates andis managed and governed. It must also ad-dress issues of procurement, tendering andauditing.“In particular, there must be rapid

progress in introducing a statutory duty forindividual doctors to disclose full informa-

tion to patients. We need to see legal sanc-tions for individuals who hide informationfrom patents or keep them in the dark. These should be introduced as part of thePatient Safety Bill which is currently beforethe Oireachtas.”Deputy Shortall added: “I also fully sup-

port the calls made by Dr Scally as well asStephen Teap and Lorraine Walsh today forthe affected women and their families toreceive proper apologies from individualdoctors for how their cases were so badlymis-handled.“Dr Scally’s report lifts the lid on what is

an exceptionally paternalistic culturewithin elements of the medical profession. It is incumbent on the profession to com-mit to tackling these issues, which haveclearly caused so much additional andneedless suffering for patients and theirfamilies.”Deputy Shortall said it was unfortunate

that Dr Scally’s report does not contain anyinformation on the accuracy rates of thevarious labs which carried out screening onbehalf of CervicalCheck.“The only lab referenced in the report is

CLP in Texas which has not been used since2013, and Dr Scally’s report is very damningof the practices in this company. The ques-tions and suffering do not end here.Women affected by this scandal and theirfamilies must still wait several moremonths for the report from the Royal Col-lege of Obstetricians and Gynaecologistswhich is inquiring into clinical failures inrelation to their diagnosis and treatment.”

Screening programme was‘always doomed to fail’

'Raise the Roof: Homes for All'rally on October 3rd

THE RALLY will coincide with across-party housing motion tobe debated in the Dáil laterthat day.

The Irish Congress of TradeUnions along with the Union ofStudents in Ireland, the Na-tional Women’s Council of Ire-land, the National Housing &Homeless Coalition and FrPeter Mc Verry launched 'Raisethe Roof: Homes for All' rallyoutside the Dáil at 12.30 on Oc-tober 3rd.

The call was also supportedby Focus Ireland, Simon Com-munities of Ireland and a rangeof other advocacy and cam-paign groups.

The rally has been called tosupport a cross-party Dáil mo-tion on the housing and home-less crisis signed by Sinn Féin,Labour, People Before Profit,

Solidarity, The Social Democ-rats, The Green Party, Inde-pendents for Change andIndependent members of theOireachtas.

Todays civil society initiativeis hugely important. It providespeople from across the countrywith a non-partisan space toexpress the growing demandfor a radical change of housingpolicy and increased invest-ment in social and affordablehousing to be included inBudget 2019.

Raise the Roof: Homes forAll has the potential to be aturning point in our housingdebate. If we can harness theanger and energy of the broadpublic it could exert significantpressure on Fine Gael and Fi-anna Fáil and force realchange.
