SEMINAR

The Mongolia Incident: Letters of a WWI NurseFriday, June 16, 1 pm

The wartime letters of Zella Maude Judy open a window into the past world of military nursing. Citing extensive research into her letters, her grandson Vernon Beck will tell the story of a young woman who, when she found unspeakable suffering, stepped forward to do what she could to ease the pain. She survived tragedy on the troopship Mongolia, was gassed, and stricken by influenza; yet she emerged with her sense of duty intact and spirit of rebellion undaunted. Maude’s letters also reveal a woman who does not fit easily into our notion of what a military nurse should have been like. While she was hard working, skilled and completely devoted to the care of wounded soldiers, Maude was also feisty, fun-loving and adventurous. Come hear this deeply personal story of a remarkable woman in extraordinary times.

RAFFLE WINNER

Founders Hall, a 501(c)3 public charity incorporated under the name Founders Hall Foundation, Inc., was established by the Couri and Goldstone families. The Foundation has an agreement with the town of Ridgefield to lease the land and run Founders Hall through 2022, with the option for future extensions. With continued support from generous people like you, the Foundation will run Founders Hall for generations to come.

DEVELOPMENT

SPRING FOR THINGSThanks to many generous members, our annual Spring for Things campaign raised $5,647 to purchase 187 items. The hot ticket item was room-darkening shades for the lecture room. With money from “tulip purchases” and an anonymous donation, we have ordered the shades, which will enhance those classes that use the projection screen.

“This is your oganization. We’re proud to be stewards of it for you.” ~ John Couri, President, Board of Directors

Board of Directors chairman Steven Goldstone and president John Couri along with executive director Grace Weber and development director Cindy Nesbitt reviewed our past fiscal year with members on May 16. “We’re

a healthy organization,” reported John, “but we need to build up a reserve.” He noted plans for an endowment to generate income that can offset expenses, enabling us to “maintain our operations with the best programming.”

Grace reviewed highlights of 2016, and announced that online registration will be available this fall. Cindy reviewed sources of funding, mentioned a variety of ways to give, and encouraged members to thank community sponsors. Steve recognized three bequests from members. “They gave because they were enthusiastically involved and because of who they were,” he said, adding, “and they benefited from the friendship and love from Founders Hall.”

In response to questions, Grace noted that expenses, revenue and membership all grew in 2016; that additional fitness classes are limited by facility space; that evening programs have been successful, and that popular trips can be repeated. Board member Rudy Marconi added that the town has plans to add 30 parking spots this year.

You can read details in your 2016 Impact Report, which was mailed to you. That report and financial statements are also available on our website. If you have questions, Grace’s door is always open.

ANNUAL MEETING
