Mission & Goals Statement of the Department of AthleticsThe Georgetown University Department of Athletics, as part of a university with roots in the Jesuit tradition of education, commits itself to the comprehensive development of the student. The interdependence of the physical, emotional, moral and intel-lectual aspects of personal growth requires simultaneous and balanced focus. This objective does not imply that each facet of an individual’s psychological, social and academic growth is of equal importance. It does require that Georgetown provide the means and encouragement for each person to develop according to his or her own interests and abilities. This is especially true in athletics, whether at the recreational, intercollegiate, intramural or instructional level. In addition to physical development, the Department of Athletics promotes principles of character, development and sportsmanship within the framework of an abiding and broadened commitment to community. Accordingly, the Athletics Department is committed to, fosters and pursues the fair and equitable treatment of both men and women, and the provision of equitable access and opportunities for minority students and institutional personnel.
Title IX and NCAA Peer ReviewThe Georgetown University Athletics Department has recently undergone two extensive reviews of its athletic programs: an audit by the Department of Education concerning Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, and Georgetown’s inaugural review under the NCAA’s new Athletics Certifi cation program. The Department of Education has found Georgetown’s athletic programs to be in compliance with Title IX, and the University was certifi ed by the NCAA in November of 1995.
NCAA Position on GamblingThe NCAA opposes all forms of legal and illegal sports wagering. Sports wagering has the potential to undermine the integrity of sports contests and jeopardizes the welfare of student-athletes and the intercollegiate community. Sports wagering demeans the competition and competitors alike by a message that is contrary to the purposes and meaning of “sport.” Sports competition should be appreciated for the inherent benefi ts related to participation of student-athletes, coaches and institutions in fair contests, not the amount of money wagered on the outcome of the competition. For these reasons, the NCAA membership has adopted specifi c rules prohibiting athletics department staff mem-bers and student-athletes from engaging in gambling activities as they relate to intercollegiate or professional sporting events.
Anti-Discrimination PolicyIn accordance with the requirements of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the implementing regulations promulgated under each of these federal statutes, Georgetown University does not discriminate in its programs, activities, or employment practices on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. The University’s compliance program under these statutes and regulations is supervised by Rosemary Kilkenny, Special Assistant to the President of Affi rma-tive Action Programs. Her offi ce is located in Room G-10, Darnall Hall, and her telephone number is (202) 687-4798.

“While at Georgetown University I could never have imagined the respect and esteem that would be afforded me by mere mention of my dual existence as a student-athlete there. My affi liation with the University as a student and an athlete has afforded me diverse inroads and amazing opportunities.
“What was not as obvious during my tenure at Georgetown, is now abundantly clear — the endurance, discipline, balance and teamwork that fuels every team are the same keys to success in one’s professional life. I have used the lessons learned as a member of the women’s basketball team to achieve on a new court.“

“Participating in intercollegiate athlet-ics, especially basketball, was a wonderful experience. It showed me the value of hard work, the importance of teamwork and how to handle disappointments and success. It helped me prioritize my goals and focus on the tasks at hand. In essence, it helped me sort out what’s important and showed me tools that I could use within myself to succeed.”

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
“In my professional life, I routinely draw upon my experi-ence at Georgetown University as a scholar-athlete. The expe-rience and opportunities afforded to me as a student-athlete were both signifi cant and varied.
“Indeed, there is a direct correlation between the skills I honed at Georgetown and my legal successes. Being a part of the women’s basketball team allowed me to better understand and appreciate such things as the importance of team work, the art of compromise, and the ability to perform at the highest level under any set of conditions.
“More importantly, the emphasis that Georgetown’s wom-en’s basketball places upon balance is a lesson that I draw upon everyday. Success for a Georgetown Student-Athlete is not defi ned simply in terms of athletic accomplishments but rather by one’s ability to work hard and succeed in all facets of life including academia, personal relationships, and athletics.
“As a young attorney, I discovered that to be successful, the same balance must be achieved.”

Rebekkah Brunson helped lead the Sacramento Monarchs to a 62-59 victory over the Connecticut Sun to claim the 2005 WNBA Championship. Brunson turned in a solid performance for Sacramento with 12 points, and six rebounds in the championship game. This past season, she again was strong off the bench for the Monarchs as they advanced to the fi nals for the second consecutive season.
The only Georgetown women’s basketball player to ever earn AP All-America honors, Brunson was chosen 10th over-all by the Sacramento Monarchs in the 2004 WNBA draft. She was the fi rst Hoya ever to be drafted in the fi rst round and just the second Georgetown player to be drafted by a WNBA team. She was a two-time All-BIG EAST First-Team selection and was honored as the league’s 2004 Defensive Player of the Year and the 2001 Rookie of the Year.
As a senior, Brunson became the fi rst player in BIG EAST history to lead the league in scoring (20.4 ppg) and rebounding (11.3 rpg). She owns all of Georgetown’s rebounding records – career rebounds (1,093), season rebounds (336) and single game rebounds (22) and ranks second on the career scoring list (1,762).
“The decision to attend Georgetown University taught me a lot about myself. I matured and grew as a person and as a basketball player during my four years on campus.
“The respect and prestige associated with having played at such a highly respect-ed university has continued to open doors for me both personally and professionally.
“Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the friendships that I made both on and off the court have proved to be the most rewarding and valuable experiences that have remained with me since my departure from the Hilltop!”
