REGISTRATION INFORMATION_ _ ___________________ Welcome to Diakon Living & Learning After 50! We are the only program in Schuylkill County that offers courses, events, activities and workshops exclusively designed for the active older adult. All of our offerings are geared to those who are 50+ and have a desire to:

* Discover their creative side * Explore the latest in health & wellness trends * Delve into modern-day technologies * Meet new people with common interests and enrich life!

Between these pages you will find over fifty courses, classes or special events designed with you in mind. If you’ve never participated in our program before, we hope you will find something that piques your interest and join us. If you’ve already experienced one (or more) of our courses, we thank you for your continued patronage! Although the classes are geared toward the 50+ crowd, everyone is welcome.

We are always looking for new and exciting opportunities that provide enjoyment, socialization,

learning/networking opportunities and making new friends. Consider it a Facebook connection

Looking for a gift idea for someone?

Diakon Living and Learning offers Gift Certificates of any denomination.

Registration Policies: 1. Class sizes are limited. Registrations received after the deadline will not be honored unless there are still openings. 2. Course fees must be submitted with registration. 3. A $30.00 fee will be imposed on any check returned by the bank.

Confirmations: 1. Confirmations will be sent via e-mail. 2. Registrants without e-mail will be notified via phone.

Refunds: 1. If a course is cancelled by Diakon, a full refund will be issued. 2. Refunds will be issued if you cancel prior to the registration deadline.

Cancellations/Postponements: 1. Diakon reserves the right to cancel courses due to insufficient registration or to make late changes in programs to provide the best possible instruction and facility utilization. 2. Courses in community facilities are subject to change when they conflict with regular facility activities. Advance notice will be given and make-up sessions scheduled. 3. If a course needs to be postponed due to inclement weather, you will be notified via telephone.

Other Information: 1. Waiting lists will be formed when classes are filled. Every attempt will be made to accommodate persons on these lists. 2. If you have an interest in a program we do not currently offer, contact our Diakon office at 570-624-3018 or 1-800-621-6325. 3. Special accommodations needed for people with a disability should notify our Diakon office two weeks prior to the start of the course.

USING MICROSOFT OUTLOOK $20/one session Barry Long, Instructor Once you start using Outlook regularly, it can be difficult to keep up with all of your messages. Fortunately, there are several features that can help you manage and organize your messages. In this informational session you will learn how to create folders, apply categories, and set rules. PLANT FERTILIZER $20/one session Kim Morgan, Instructor Many people who garden do not like to use commercial products to fertilize their plants. They prefer natural ingredients. Green is in, when it comes to gardening. There is an easy to make fertilizer for your plants that do not have the store bought chemicals. Make and take a DIY Miracle Grow fertilizer along with a number of refills. Bring a gallon size container. POW WOW – PA DUTCH FOLK MEDICINE $5/one session Pow wow practitioners served rural folks with ways to heal common maladies. Learn more about the history of this practice and discuss techniques and hear of some personal stories from those who were treated. “Porcupine Pat” of the Schuylkill Conservation District will shed light on the pow wow tradition and its importance to the rural lifestyle and elaborate even further on its history and practices. GIFT BOXES $25/one session Kim Morgan, Instructor Paper boxes are great fun to make and can be adapted in a variety of ways. The simple folded box is made from two sheets of square paper and can be made in various sizes depending on the size of the paper you use. WRITING CREATIVE NONFICTION $50/three sessions Sara Hodon, Instructor Creative nonfiction blends the fascinating facts and real-life events of nonfiction with the personality and heart of the most entertaining fiction. SWIFT WATER AWARENESS /BASIC KAYAKING $20/donation

We will cover requirements in PA for small non-powered boats. Basic kayaking skills, Identifying natural and manmade water hazards. How to properly don a personal flotation device. Review techniques for self-rescue in moving water. This course is for people who wish to start kayaking/canoeing in local lakes and rivers in PA. It is just an overview no equipment is required. TRY SCUBA DIVING $20/donation Ever wonder what it’s like to scuba dive? A little nervous about trying scuba diving for the first time? Then come and try SCUBA diving in a pool. You will get a quick review of what is involved with SCUBA and then get in the pool and try diving. You will use Mask, Fins, BCD (Buoyancy Compensation Device), Regulator and Tank to swim underwater with a certified leader. Medical questionnaire must be filled out before participating. YOGA AND MINDFULNESS WALKING $5/one session The practice of mindfulness can bring many benefits to your emotional and physical health, as well as to the relationships in your life. Mindfulness is an amazing tool for stress management and overall wellness because it can be used at virtually any time and can quickly bring lasting results. “Porcupine Pat” of the Schuylkill Conservation District highlights the importance of bringing mindfulness into your everyday life. We provide free, confidential health insurance counsel-ing for people with Medicare. Diakon Community Ser-vices’ APPRISE program, has helped many people over the years in these ways:

Counselors work one-on-one with you to discuss insurance options and explain benefits that are unique to your situation.

Medicare Open Enrollment events are held in several locations around the county from Oct. 15 - Dec. 7.

Counselors can assist with applying for a variety of Medicare related benefits.

FALL RISK ASSESSMENT AND PREVENTION Don’t become a statistic...falls are a leading cause of hospitalization and disability for adults over aged 60. This evidence-based program will measure your fall risk through a variety of screenings and show you what YOU can do to reduce those risks and stay on your feet! HEALTHY STEPS IN MOTION Healthy Steps in Motion is the exercise portion of a comprehensive falls prevention program. This exercise program is offered at no charge and is designed for people of all fitness levels. The program is a 1-hour session twice a week for four weeks and is taught by a certified instructor; it starts with a warm-up, followed by strength & balance exercises and ends with a cool down-stretch. Health & Wellness Program: The PA Health & Wellness Program is a statewide program focusing

on health promotion and disease prevention activities for older Pennsylvanians. Emphasis is on health risk screenings, self-management of chronic conditions, fall risk prevention, medication management , healthy eating and physical activity.

Serve our local adults by leading Health & Wellness programs! This is a great opportunity to: • have a positive impact on the health and well-being of our seniors

• co-facilitate a group program that’s been studied and proven to have positive outcomes • provide education, camaraderie and fun to older adults on topics affecting fall prevention and chronic disease management, both of which are priority areas in our State Plan on Aging.

Operation Reach Out We are looking for a few good voices to provide telephone reassurance calls to Meals on Wheels Consumers on Tuesdays in our Pottsville office.

Clerical Help If you have computer experience, enjoy customer service, and like working in a friendly office environment; then volunteering in our Diakon office may be a good fit for you. Volunteer duties can range from tasks such as answer-ing phones, scheduling appointments to data entry.

Drivers Looking for a rewarding volunteer experience? Consider becoming a volunteer driver. Volunteers touch the lives of seniors in Schuylkill County by delivering nutritious lunches and/or monthly food toes helping them maintain an independent lifestyle.
