I recently took a trip to the Midwest, where I had lived for much of my life. I got to spend time with friends and family whom this year, have been beaten up badly by Old Man Winter. While I was there, I listened to sto-ry after story about how awful it’s been and how spring can’t come soon enough. However, beyond that, there was another topic of conversation that came up often. It was a subject I have heard many times before. It ZDVWKH³ZKHQ,UHWLUH,¶PJHWWLQJRXWRIKHUH´RU³LI,FRXOGOHDYH,¶GJRVRPHZKHUHZDUP´FRQYHUVDWLRQ

I have been part this discussion many times before. However, it wasn’t until this recent trip that I realized I have never had this talk with anybody in Arizona. It struck me that while the summers can be unbearably hot (causing many of us to escape the heat whenever possible), I have never heard anyone claim that as soon as they get the chance they are leaving this state forever.

Obviously, there are many Arizona residents who have already gone through this metamorphosis and have moved here after their retirement. Others, like myself, are lucky to be here during our working years. Regardless of what stage we are at, it can be to easy to forget how great life in the valley can be. That’s why we should all take a step back, take a look at where we live and appreciate the fact that it’s a place that others only dream about!

FEATURE STORY

The Dog Days of Summer It’s almost summertime, which means it’s pool time! Nothing beats the refreshing feeling of diving into your pool on a hot 105-degree day, so imagine how great it feels for your fur-covered dog. The experience of sharing the pool with your dog can be fun for all, but there are consequences to consider. By taking a few simple steps, it’s easy for a well-trained dog to enjoy the pool as much as you do and also take care of your pool.

The regular presence of a dog may necessitate an adjustment in your pool care and chemical practices. Organic matter, oils and phosphates will be released into the pool in greater concentration than that which comes from humans. When it comes to bringing outside matter into the pool, an average size dog is equal to three people. If you have more than one dog in the pool, multiply that number by three and you will soon learn why you are using more sanitizer or chlorine than normal.

$VZLWKDQ\W\SHRISRRODFWLYLW\VDIHW\VKRXOGEH\RXUWRSFRQFHUQ7KH¿UVWWKLQJWRdo is to make sure that everyone is comfortable with Fido or Spot being in the pool. If someone has a fear of dogs, those fears can escalate quickly in a pool with nowhere to run.

Once everyone is in the pool, keep in mind that a dog with sharp nails, in motion, is like swimming with a chain saw. Be sure to keep those nails trimmed and tell the kids to notify you immediately, if an accident does happen. For the dog’s sake, keep a watchful eye on their nails and pads as they can quickly wear down to the point of bleeding, as they excitedly race around the pool’s exterior. Repeated launching from pool steps and cool decking can tear up the paw pads as well, especially, dogs that spend most of their time on grass.

After the swim, rinse them thoroughly, making sure to get all chlorine and pool chemicals R̆RIWKHLUVNLQDQGIXU,I\RXGRQ¶WJHWWKHFKDQFHWRUHPRYHWKHLUFROODUEHIRUHWKH\GLYHLQEHVXUHWRWDNHLWR̆DIWHUZDUGVDVDZHWFROODUFDQFDXVHKRWVSRWVWRGHYHORS)LQDOO\GU\\RXUSRRFKR̆ZHOOSD\LQJH[WUDDWWHQWLRQWRWKHHDUVJURLQDQGDUPSLWVAll of which are areas where moisture-induced infections can occur. This may also save you and your friends from getting drenched when your dog unexpectedly decides it’s time for a shake!

After a good swim, it’s inevitable that the dog will have left some hair EHKLQG<RXPDGHEHVXUSULVHGWKDWDKLJKSHUFHQWDJHRIWKDWKDLULVQRWEHLQJFDXJKWE\WKHVNLPPHU7KHKDLUDQGOLQWSRWDQGRU¿OWHUZLOOHQGXSZLWKWKHPDMRULW\RIWKHORVWKDLU'HSHQGDQWRQWKHW\SHRI¿OWHU\RXKDYHSHULRGLFEDFNZDVKLQJRUFOHDQLQJof the cartridges will help in keeping your system running smoothly. To minimize the upkeep, we recommend keeping your dog’s coat trimmed as short as possible and to brush them out regularly.

So stay cool this summer make sure and make sure that Fido does too. Just remember these few simple tips and avoid costly maintenance for both your pool AND your dog!!

Arizona is beautiful; there is no doubt about that. However the biggest complaint I hear is that sometimes it feels like summer all year long. Sure we go through seasonal changes just like people

in other states, but the visual cues that mark a new season aren’t always so obvious here in the valley. If the change of seasons is something you miss, then seasonal decorating is just for you!

With seasonal decorating, you can change out accessories every few months, keeping things fresh and giving you a sense of the current season. This can be accomplished with major and/or minor tweaks to your décor with no need to change out your furniture or wall color. Let’s use spring as an example. One of the easiest way to transition into the new season is to change curtains to a lighter ZHLJKW IDEULF DGG QDWXUDO SODQWV DQG ÀRZHUVRU SHUKDSV FKDQJH WKH VRID SLOORZV WR DÀRUDOor spring theme. That same process can work for the bedroom too. A lighter weight, colorful comforter and bright throw pillows will help to make that transition out of winter, into spring.

6LPSOHU WKLQJV OLNH VHDVRQDO ÀRZHUV D QHZrunner or centerpiece on the kitchen table or a spring themed wreath on the front door are all ways to help your home and mind change

with the seasons. In fact, my belief in this concept is so strong, it inspired the name of my company…In Season Design.

HIT THE ROAD

Looking for some beautiful scenery without spending a lot of money? One of the most scenic day trips in Arizona is only about an hour away! The Apache Trail is a well-traveled route that UXQV WKURXJK WKH6XSHUVWLWLRQ0RXQWDLQVR̆HULQJbeautiful views of desert plants, trees, lakes, ZLOGÀRZHUVDQGJHRORJLFIRUPDWLRQV

After entering the Tonto National Forest, on the Northeast end of Apache Junction, the Apache Trail will lead you to a plethora of incredible vistas as it winds up and down through the Superstition Mountains. Grab an ice cream for dessert and hop back on the trail. The road will continue to wind through the mountains, paralleling the Salt River and Apache Lake, ultimately leading you to Roosevelt Lake and Dam At that point you can either reverse your route for the drive home, giving you a whole new perspective to the beauty that you just witnessed or head towards Globe, leading you to Highway 60, which will return you to the 101 loop.
