Eyja%allajökull • Name: Eyja*allajökull (say ‘ay-uh-fyat-luh-yoe-kuutl-ul’ ‘island-mountain-glacier’. • Loca:on: Southern Iceland • Height: 1,651 metres (5,417 feet) • Last erup:on: April 2010 This ice-capped volcano in Iceland erupted in 2010 and released a massive ash cloud. The eﬀects of this erup:on were felt far beyond its shores. Ash and gas were shot 10 kilometres into the sky during the erup:on. This was so high that winds in the upper atmosphere, blowing from the north and north-west, carried the ash cloud towards Europe. This meant that planes all over Europe were grounded – it wasn’t safe in the air, as even :ny specks of volcanic ash can damage aeroplane engines. Many holiday-makers were stranded for ten days before they were able to catch a ﬂight home, once the ash cloud had been dispersed by the wind.

Weares:llonalertbuthavenotbeenevacuated.Weareluckierthanthoseinsurroundingareasasourvillageisnotunderdirectthreatatthemoment.ThefarmersintheFlotsdalirareawhowereevacuatedagainlastnighthavereturnedtotheirfarms.
