Please read through the instructions before beginning.

WHAT YOU NEED• Cotton batting: 10 x 10-inch square. Use a light to medium weight batting.• Lining fabric: 10 x 10-inch square• Case front: four small pieces of solid and print cotton fabric, about 1/8 yd total. (Cut sizes are outlined on the next page).• For optional button and loop closure: 1 button, approx 1/2-ich to 3/4-inch in size, and 4 - 5 inches of a narrow ribbon, soutache, or other suitable narrow trim for the loop.

This color-block eyeglass case provides the perfect soft, protective covering for your fashionable shades. Leave the boring cases they give you at the eyeglass shop at the eyeglass shop, and personalize this eye-catching case with your favorite colors and prints. Best of all, you can whip it up in the blink of an eye. This design has an open top for easy access, but you can easily add a button and loop closure to keep your shades from slipping out. I made the eyeglass cases shown throughout with my Five + Ten fabrics from Windham fabrics, but you can substitute any fabrics you may have in your stash.

SEW• All seam allowances are 1/4-inch, unless otherwise noted.

• Lay out the four case front rectangles, as shown above. With right sides together, stitch A to B, B to C, and C to D.

• Press seam allowances in one direction. Resulting pieced square will measure about 9 inches square.

QUILT THE EYEGLASS CASE• Prepare your materials for machine-quilting: Sandwich the batting between the case front (right side up) and the lining fabric (wrong side up). Pin around perimeter to prevent layers from shifting as you stitch.

• Machine-quilt the case front: Set your machine’s stitch length to about 10 stitches per inch and stitch diagonal lines from the top left corner to bottom right corner. There’s no need to backstitch as you’ll cut through stitches later.

• Continue to stitch diagonal (but not necessarily parallel) lines on each side of first diagonal line at 1/4 to 1-inch intervals as shown below.

• Now stitch diagonal line from top right corner to bottom left corner of case front, to create an overall diamond pattern. Continue stitching, adding diagonal lines on each side of first line at 1/4 to 1-inch intervals.

ASSEMBLE THE EYEGLASS CASE• Square up the quilted the case front to 8 inches square. Remember you’ll lose 1/2 inch of the top rectangle to the hem, so trim with an eye toward proportions and positioning of the stripes.

• Machine-baste 1/8-inch from top edge.

• Cut square in half to create two 4 x 8-inch rectangles, as shown below.

• With right sides together, stitch the two rectangles together on the sides and bottom, leaving the top edge open.

• Turn case right side out. Use a knitting needle or other pointy tool (but not sharp) to turn out the corners.

FINISH THE EYEGLASS CASE• For a neater finish, use a zig zag stitch or serge the raw edge.

• Pin the cut ends of the loop to the inside of one side of the case as shown (below left), and stitch to secure.

• Turn a 1/2-inch hem toward the inside, and edge stitch.

• Flip the loop toward the eyeglass case opening and tack along the foldline to keep it from flipping toward the inside of the case (below, right).

• Hand-stitch a button on the front of the opposite side, about 1/2-inch from the hem.

Now you’re ready to hit the beach – enjoy!
