DTP T SW4 HD 4K • Installation 8

ATTENTION:

• Always use a power supply supplied and or specified by Extron. Use of an unauthorized power supply voids all regulatory compliance certification and may cause damage to the supply and the end product.

• Utilisez toujours une source d’alimentation fournie ou recommandée par Extron. L’utilisation d’une source d’alimentation non autorisée annule toute conformité réglementaire et peut endommager la source d’alimentation ainsi que le produit final.

• If not provided with a power supply, this product is intended to be supplied by a power source marked “Class 2” or “LPS” and rated at 12 VDC and a minimum of 1.5 A.

• Si le produit n’est pas fourni avec une source d’alimentation, il doit être alimenté par une source d’alimentation certifié UL de classe 2 ou LPS, avec une tension nominale 12 Vcc, 1.5 A minimum.

• The installation must always be in accordance with the applicable provisions of National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA 70, article 725 and the Canadian Electrical Code part 1, section 16. The power supply shall not be permanently fixed to building structure or similar structure.

• Power supply voltage polarity is critical. Incorrect voltage polarity can damage the power supply and the unit. The ridges on the side of the cord (see figure 3 on the previous page) identify the power cord negative lead.

• To verify the polarity before connection, plug in the power supply with no load and check the output with a voltmeter.

• Pour vérifier la polarité avant la connexion, brancher l’alimentation hors charge et mesurer sa sortie avec un voltmètre.

• The length of the exposed (stripped) copper wires is important. The ideal length is 3/16 inch (5 mm). Longer bare wires can short together. Shorter wires are not as secure in the connectors and could be pulled out.

• Unless otherwise stated, the AC/DC adapters are not suitable for use in air handling spaces or in wall cavities.

• Sauf mention contraire, les adaptateurs CA/CC ne conviennent pas à une utilisation dans les espaces d’aération ou dans les cavités murales.

• Remote power is intended for indoors use only. No part of a network that uses remote power can be routed outdoors.

• L’alimentation à distance est exclusivement réservée à un usage en intérieur. Un réseau utilisant une alimentation à distance ne peut pas être routé en extérieur.

ATTENTION:

• Do not use Extron UTP23SF-4 Enhanced Skew-Free AV UTP cable or STP201 cable to link the switching transmitter and receiver.

• N’utilisez pas le câble AV Skew-Free UTP version améliorée UTP23SF d’Extron ou le câble STP201 pour relier les produits XTP avec les émetteurs ou les récepteurs DTP.

Supported cables

DTP T SW4 HD 4K is compatible with shielded twisted pair (STP) and unshielded twisted pair (U/UTP) cable. However, Extron strongly recommends that you use STP cable to achieve best performance.

Cable recommendations

Extron recommends using the following practices to achieve full transmission distances up to 330 feet (100 meters) and reduce transmission errors.

• Use the following Extron XTP DTP 24 STP cables and DTP 24 connectors for the best performance:

• XTP DTP 24/1000 Non-Plenum 1000 feet (305 meters) spool• XTP DTP 24P/1000 Plenum 1000 feet (305 meters) spool• XTP DTP 24 Plug Package of 10

• If not using XTP DTP 24 cable, at a minimum, Extron recommends 24 AWG, solid conductor, STP cable with a minimum bandwidth of 400 MHz.

• Terminate cables with shielded connectors to the TIA/EIA-T568B standard.

• Use no more than two pass-through points, which may include patch points, punch down connectors, couplers, and power injectors. If these pass-through points are required, use Category 6 or 6a shielded couplers and punch down connectors.

NOTE: When using TP cable in bundles or conduits, consider the following:

• Do not exceed 40% fill capacity in conduits.

• Do not comb the cable for the first 65 feet (20 meters), where cables are straightened, aligned, and secured in tight bundles.

• Loosely place cables and limit the use of tie wraps or hook-and-loop fasteners.

• Separate twisted pair cables from AC power cables.

DTP T SW4 HD 4K • Installation 12

Auto-Input SwitchingThe DTP T SW4 HD 4K switcher can automatically select the active, connected input based on detection of an active video signal (TMDS clock activity). If two or more inputs are active, the highest-numbered input port with an active signal is selected. When auto-input switching is in effect, the green Auto Switch LED on the front panel (see figure 7, A on page 13) lights and the front panel input buttons are disabled.

To enable auto-input switching:

1. Cut a small piece of wire to use as a jumper.

2. Insert the ends of the wire into the two pins of the provided 2-pole captive screw connector, connecting pins 1 and 2 together.

3. Use a small screwdriver to tighten the two screws above pins of the connector so that the jumper wire ends remain securely in place (see diagram on the right).

4. Insert the connector into the 2-pole Auto captive screw port on the rear panel (see figure 2, H on page 5).

Auto-input switching remains in effect as long as the jumper wire connects the two Auto pins of the 2-pole captive screw.

Securing the HDMI ConnectorFollow these instructions to secure the input connectors to the switcher with the LockIt HDMI lacing bracket provided:

1. Plug the HDMI cable into the rear panel connection.

2. Loosen the HDMI connection mounting screw from the panel enough to allow the LockIt lacing bracket to be placed over it. The screw does not have to be removed.

3. Place the LockIt lacing bracket on the screw and against the HDMI connector, then tighten the screw to secure the bracket.

ATTENTION:

• Do not overtighten the connector mounting screw. The shield it fastens to is very thin and can easily be stripped.

• Ne serrez pas trop la vis de montage du connecteur. Le blindage auquel elle est attachée est très fin et peut facilement être dénudé.

4. Loosely place the included tie wrap around the HDMI connector and the LockIt lacing bracket as shown.

5. While holding the connector securely against the lacing bracket, tighten the tie wrap, then remove any excess length.

Operations

Powering on the SwitcherTo power on the DTP T SW4 HD 4K:

1. Connect all input and output devices to the rear panel ports on the switcher (see Rear Panel Features on page 5 for the rear panel connections).

2. Power on the display.

3. Power on the DTP T SW4 HD 4K: Insert the 2-pole captive screw power supply connector into the power inlet on the switcher rear panel.

After approximately 4 seconds, the following happens:

• The unit performs a self-test, during which the front panel Auto Switch, Inputs, Signal, and HDCP LEDs each blink once in sequence from left to right. When the self-test completes, the LED for the most recently selected input remains lit.

• The switcher reads the available EDID information from the connected output device and writes it to memory on each input. When power is removed, these settings remain in memory and are in effect when power is reapplied.

4. Power on the input devices.

Selecting an InputTo select an input, you have the following options:

• Front panel buttons — Press the desired input button on the front panel.

• The appropriate front panel Input LED lights to indicate the selected input. The LED remains lit until a new input is selected.

• Only one input can be switched to the output at a time.

NOTE: Front panel buttons are disabled in auto-switch mode and executive mode.

DTP T SW4 HD 4K • Operation 15

• Contact closure — Insert one of the provided 2-pole or 4-pole captive screw connectors into the rear panel Contact port to enable input switching via contact closure on inputs 1 through 4. To make input selections via contact closure from the rear panel, Contact Closure pins (C) need to be momentarily shorted to the Ground pin (G) (see Contact Closure Connectors on page 9 for wiring instructions).

NOTE: If an input pin is latched permanently to the ground pin, input switching by any other method is disabled while those pins are connected.

• Remote control — Inputs can be selected using Extron SIS commands or PCS (see the Input Selection on page 43 or Input Configuration Panel on page 31).

Contact/Tally ModesThe Contact/Tally ports on the DTP T SW4 HD 4K switcher operate in four modes depending on the needs and configuration of the end user. The modes can be selected via SIS Commands (see Contact/Tally Mode Setting on page 45) or PCS (see Contact Closure and Tally Settings on page 34).

NOTES:

• The following application diagrams are designed as examples of how the four Contact/Tally modes can be used. The external controller, methods of control (RS-232 or Ethernet), and Global Configuration Professional and Plus configuration will vary to accommodate the configuration.

• Show Me cables pictured in the following diagrams are available with TeamWork Systems.

• When Contact/Tally ports are grouped together, only one port can be selected.

• Contact/Tally ports 1 through 4 operate the same in modes 0, 2, and 3.

DTP T SW4 HD 4K • Operation 18

In the Contact/Tally Mode 1 diagram, the IPL Pro S3 controls all six ports, as it monitors the status of the ports through the RS-232 driver. The IPL also controls the display, sending the command to power it On and Off.

Operation of Contact/Tally Mode 1:

• The Extron IPL Pro S3 is configured with GCP (see Control Processor Configuration for Contact/Tally Modes on page 23) to monitor and control the switcher, CCR 30, and display via Extron RS-232 drivers, using Actions and Conditions configured to control the devices.

• When contact ports 1, 2, or 3 are momentarily closed (shorted) with the Extron Show Me cables, a command to switch video input is sent from the IPL to the switcher via RS-232 drivers to switch to the appropriate input.

• The CCR 30 is wired to contact/tally ports 4 and 5 to send commands to power the display ON and OFF. The IPL monitors the status of ports 4 and 5 via the RS-232 driver.

• The CCR 30 power ON button is wired to contact/tally 4:

• When the contact pin of port 4 is closed (shorted), the IPL receives an unsolicited response from the switcher via the RS-232 driver.

• The IPL sends a command through the switcher to the display to power ON.

• The IPL sends a command to close tally pin 4, which lights the LED button for power ON.

• The IPL also sends a command to open tally pin 5, which turns off the LED button for power OFF.

• The CCR 30 power OFF button is wired to contact/tally 5:

• When the contact pin of port 5 is closed (shorted), the IPL receives an unsolicited response from the switcher through the RS-232 driver.

• The IPL sends a command through the switcher to the display to power OFF.

• The IPL sends a command to close tally pin 5, which lights the LED button for power OFF.

• The IPL also sends a command to open tally pin 4, which turns off the LED button for power ON.

• The CCR 30 is wired to contact/tally port 6 for muting:

• The MUTE ON/OFF button does not affect the power buttons.

NOTE: The MUTE ON/OFF button is configured for latching operation.

The first compression of the button latches contact pin 6 closed, sending the IPL an unsolicited response from the switcher through the RS-232 driver.

The IPL then sends a command to close tally pin 6, to light the LED button for MUTE ON/OFF.

The IPL also sends an RS-232 command through the switcher to the display to mute ON.

• The second compression of the button latches contact pin 6 open, sending the IPL an unsolicited response from the switcher through the RS-232 driver.

The IPL then sends a command to open tally pin 6, to turn off the LED button for MUTE ON/OFF.

The IPL also sends an RS-232 command through the switcher to the display to mute OFF.

1 through 4 • Contact ports are controlled externally, using Show Me cables or other button switches.

• When a specific contact port is shorted (closed), the DTP T SW4 HD 4K switches to the associated video input.

• Firmware controls the actions of the tally port.

• The tally ports indicate the input currently selected using an LED connection, similar to the front panel LED buttons.

• When an input button is selected and the contact pin (C) is momentarily shorted, the tally follows the associated contact port. The associated tally port latches closed, lighting the button selected. All other tally ports latch open, causing their buttons to not light.

• Channel and contact port status (open or closed ) for the input selected can be monitored via SIS unsolicited responses.

5 and 6 • Firmware controls the actions of the tally ports.

• Only one tally port is latched closed at any given time.

• For example, port 5 is wired to an On button. The On button includes an integrated switch and LED. The contact pin of port 5 is connected to the switch. The tally pin of port 5 is connected to the LED. Port 6 is wired to an Off button. The contact pin 6 is connected to the switch. The tally pin 6 is connected to the LED.

• The tally ports light the On and Off buttons.

• Only one of these buttons will light at any given time.

• When the On button is pressed, the contact pin (C) is shorted, and the associated tally port latches closed, lighting the On button. The tally port on the Off button latches open, causing the Off button to turn off.

• When the Off button is pressed, the contact pin (C) is shorted, and the associated tally port latches closed, lighting the Off button. The tally port on the On button latches open, causing the On button to turn off.

• Contact port status (opened or closed) can be monitored by SIS unsolicited responses sent from the switcher to the control processor via the RS-232 port.

EDID MinderThe DTP T SW4 HD 4K switcher uses EDID Minder, which ensures that a source device connected to the HDMI input continuously sees the EDID of a sink device, even after the sink is disconnected.

By default, the EDID is set to 1080p @ 60 Hz with 2-channel audio (slot 11).

Additional available values are shown in the table below. There are 12 factory-loaded EDIDs, one slot is automatically populated by EDID from a connected sink device, and two slots can be manually populated with EDID imported by the user.Slot (X$)

* Default EDID

Factory EDID SlotsFactory EDID is available for most common resolutions and audio formats.

Output SlotThis slot contains the EDID of the connected sink device. When HPD is detected, the EDID of the sink device is stored automatically.

When a sink is removed or power to the switcher is cycled, the EDID is removed from the slot and replaced with the default value until a sink is detected and the EDID stored.

User SlotsThese two slots are available for storing imported EDID files. Initially, these slots contain the default EDID until they are overwritten by the imported files. The imported files remain in the slots until they are overwritten or the unit is reset.

EDID Memory RetentionThe assigned EDID is stored to an EEPROM, which is located at the HDMI input. The stored EDID is retained until a reset is initiated.

Hot Plug Detect (HPD)HPD remains high on all inputs while the unit is powered on. The HPD drops low only while EDID is updated.

Page 36: Extron DTP T SW4 HD 4K User Guide...switching and extending HDMI signals up to 330 feet (100 meters). It is an HDCP compliant switcher, that supports video resolutions up to 4K @ 30

DTP T SW4 HD 4K • Operation 28

HDCPThe DTP T SW4 HD 4K switcher acts as an HDCP and HDMI repeater by actively handling HDCP key negotiation and authentication on the inputs and the output. However, it does not report itself as a repeater or forward a KSV list. The switcher supports HDCP output mode.

Input

The HDMI input negotiates and authenticates HDCP with the source device if the source requires HDCP encryption. The authentication process is repeated whenever the stored EDID is changed or updated, which is indicated by pulling HPD low.

HDCP support can be disabled using SIS command (see HDCP Input Authorization on page 44) or PCS (see Input Configuration Panel on page 31).

Output

The output is pre-authenticated and encrypted, in accordance with the configured HDCP output mode. If the output requires encryption but the connected sink device cannot be authenticated, the output displays a green screen.

HDCP output modes

• Follow input — Output is always authenticated but only encrypted when required by input. HDMI authentication is continuous. DVI authentication occurs for a maximum of 10 seconds, then fails. This is the default mode.

• Always encrypt output — Output is always authenticated and encrypted. HDMI authentication is continuous. DVI authentication occurs for a maximum of 10 seconds, then fails.

• Follow Input (with continuous DVI trials) — Output is always authenticated but only encrypted when required by input. Both HDMI and DVI authentication are continuous.

• Always encrypt output (with continuous DVI trials) — Output is always authenticated and encrypted. Both HDMI and DVI authentication are continuous.

TMDS output formatThe TMDS output format has three components:

• Video format — either DVI or HDMI

• Color space — RGB 4:4:4, YCbCr 4:2:2, or YUV 4:4:4

• Quantization range — either full (0-255) or limited (16-235)

By default, the input format is configured for Auto, which automatically forces RGB 4:4:4 Full, with the video format dependent on the source signal and the sink capabilities. Use SIS commands or PCS to force the output format (see TMDS Output Format on page 43 or Output Configuration Panel on page 31)

Color depth and deep color supportThe options are:

• Automatic — The DTP T SW4 HD 4K switcher determines the best color depth supported by the sink by monitoring the EDID of the sink.

• Force 8‑bit

This can also be disabled or changed via SIS commands or PCS (see Video Color Bit Depth on page 43 or Output Configuration Panel on page 31).

Remote Communication and Control

This section describes remote operation of the DTP T SW4 HD 4K switcher. Topics include:

• Using Simple Instruction Set (SIS) Commands

• Command and Response Table for SIS Commands

Using Simple Instruction Set (SIS) CommandsThe DTP T SW4 HD 4K switcher can be remotely set up and controlled via Extron SIS commands that are issued from a host computer or other device, such as a control system. SIS commands can be issued via RS-232 from the computer serial port to the rear panel Remote port (see Remote RS‑232 Control Connector on page 11), or via USB from the computer USB port to the front panel Config port (see Connecting to the USB Port on page 24 to connect to this port).

Host-to-switcher CommunicationsSIS commands consist of one or more characters per field. No special characters are required to begin or end a command sequence. You can enter these commands from your computer using a communication software program such as Extron DataViewer. When the switcher determines that a command is valid, it executes the command and sends a response to the host device.

Responses from the DTP T SW4 HD 4K switcher to the host computer end with a carriage return and a line feed (CR/LF = ]), which signals the end of the response character string. A string is one or more characters.

Switcher-initiated MessagesWhen a local event such as a front panel selection or change in signal status takes place, the switcher responds by sending a message to the host, indicating what change has occurred. No response is required from the host.

The switcher sends the following message when it is first powered on:

(C) Copyright 2017, Extron Electronics DTP T SW4 HD 4K, Vn.nn, 60‑1625‑01

• Vn.nn is the firmware version number.

Page 49: Extron DTP T SW4 HD 4K User Guide...switching and extending HDMI signals up to 330 feet (100 meters). It is an HDCP compliant switcher, that supports video resolutions up to 4K @ 30

DTP T SW4 HD 4K • Remote Communication and Control 41

Error ResponsesIf the switcher is unable to execute a command it receives because the command is invalid or contains invalid parameters, the switcher returns an error response to the host. The following error response codes can be sent:

E01 – Invalid input channel (out of range)E06 – Invalid input while in auto-switch modeE10 – Invalid commandE13 – Invalid value (out of range)E14 – Invalid for this configuration

Using the Command and Response TableThe Command and Response Table for SIS Commands, starting on page 43, lists valid ASCII and hexadecimal command codes, the switcher responses to the host, and a description of the command function or the results of executing the command.

The conversion table below is for use with the command and response table.

Mounting

Mounting the DTP T SW4 HD 4K SwitcherThe DTP T SW4 HD 4K switcher can be set on a table, mounted on a rack shelf, or mounted under a desk, podium, or table.

ATTENTION:• Installation and service must be performed by authorized personnel only.• L’installation et l’entretien doivent être effectués par le personnel autorisé

uniquement.

Tabletop UseFour self-adhesive rubber feet are included with the DTP T SW4 HD 4K switcher. For tabletop use, attach one foot at each corner on the bottom of the unit, and place the switcher where desired.

Rack MountingThe DTP T SW4 HD 4K switcher can be mounted on a 9.5 inch, 6 inch, or 3.5 inch deep rack shelf. The switcher can also be mounted vertically to the front or back rack support. For mounting procedures, see the instructions provided with the mounting option.

UL rack mounting guidelines

The following Underwriters Laboratories (UL) guidelines pertain to the safe installation of the equipment in a rack.• Elevated operating ambient temperature — If the equipment is installed in a closed

or multi-unit rack assembly, the operating ambient temperature of the rack environment may be greater than room ambient temperature. Therefore, install the equipment in an environment compatible with the maximum ambient temperature (TMA = +122 °F, +50 °C) specified by Extron.

• Reduced air flow — Install the equipment in a rack so that the amount of air flow required for safe operation of the equipment is not compromised.

• Mechanical loading — When mounting the equipment in the rack, ensure that uneven mechanical loading does not cause a hazardous condition.

• Circuit overloading — When connecting the equipment to the supply circuit, consider the effect that circuit overloading might have on overcurrent protection and supply wiring. Consider equipment nameplate ratings when addressing this concern.

• Reliable earthing (grounding) — Maintain reliable grounding of rack-mounted equipment. Pay particular attention to supply connections other than direct connections to the branch circuit (for example, use of power strips).

Furniture MountingThe DTP T SW4 HD 4K can be mounted under a desk, table, or podium using an under-desk mounting kit from the Extron UTS 100 Series (see the mounting instructions provided with the kit).
