T he Penrith Panthers take on the North Queensland Cowboys at Sportingbet Stadium in round 23 action and it is certainly a match

that deserves much more than its lowly, cold placement on a Monday night at the foot of the Mountains.

This game has emerged as a battle for a top four position, with the Panthers winning two tough games on the road in the past fortnight and the Cowboys roar-ing into premiership contention with four straight victories, including a thumping of

the inept Wests Tigers last Saturday night in Townsville.

If the Cowboys are to finish inside the top four, victory over Penrith on Monday is critical – a loss would see the Panthers open up what you would think would be an unassailable six point gap on them.

But the Panthers have just as much to play for, especially in front of their home fans, and after defeating the Bulldogs and Dragons in successive weeks on the road (following a ‘home’ game in Bathurst), the side would be pleased to return to Sport-ingbet Stadium for the first time since their thrilling one-point win over Brisbane more than a month ago.

The Panthers are the enigma of this competition.

Written off by the so-called experts even when they had almost their full side on the paddock, the Panthers are continuing to find a way to win even with an injury crisis that would cripple most clubs.

The key to success last weekend against St George-Illawarra was players stepping up to fill-in for their injured colleagues.

Peter Wallace is gone for the season, so we saw Jamie Soward take control of the game against his former club, producing

a much different kicking game than usual given the windy conditions, but getting the desired result on most occasions.

Elijah Taylor is also gone, so we saw Adam Docker play a starring role in defence, producing 30 tackles and really taking it to the Dragons’ forwards. Dock-er’s nine missed tackles were a concern, but the bloke was involved in everything and even managed to cross for a try during the 16-4 win.

The list goes on, but you get the point. Some said Penrith would unravel at the

business end of the season because they didn’t have any star players to ignite a match when it was there for the taking. But the opposite has in fact happened and the Panthers have thrived on a structure that sees everyone knowing their place and their job, and stepping up when they need to.

It is evident in how easily Penrith covers injuries during matches – on show again last weekend when David Simmons went down with concussion just before half-time.

Whilst the Panthers’ victories over the Bulldogs and Dragons have been impres-sive, there is no doubt that Monday night

presents one of the biggest challenges of the season for Ivan Cleary’s side.

The Cowboys are full of confidence given their recent form, and seem to have fixed their problems travelling away from Townsville.

While Johnathan Thurston is the obvi-ous danger man, the Cowboys are getting plenty out of players like Michael Morgan and Tautau Moga in the backs – in fact between them, Morgan and Moga clocked up seven line breaks last weekend.

The Cowboys are an exciting football side that thrives on confidence. When something goes their way, they have an innate ability to make something of it and set the tone for the rest of the game.

At the time of going to print, Cowboys forward Tariq Sims was facing the judici-ary in an attempt to beat a dangerous contact charge to play on Monday.

Penrith are essentially unchanged, with just a little bit of doubt over David Simmons.

This could be one of the closest matches of the round – in fact, I’m tipping we will find ourselves in a field goal shootout in the final minutes.

FEATURE STORY

Panthers help close the gapJamie Soward, Daren Dunn and James Segeyaro check out the special boots. Photo: Melinda Jane

D aren Dunn is one of the best and most well-known Aboriginal artists this country has to offer.

His beautiful hand-painted designs have been worn by some of the most famous athletes in Australian sport and now it’s Penrith’s turn to show their pride for Australia’s rich Indigenous culture.

Dunn has specially hand-designed and painted a number of unique items which will be worn by players during Penrith’s ‘Close The Gap’ Round clash with the North Queensland Cowboys this Monday night at Sportingbet Stadium.

Along with designing Penrith’s first ever

Indigenous themed jersey, Dunn has also designed and hand-painted Aboriginal-inspired boots for six players including stars Jamie Soward and James Segeyaro.

Each of the pairs of boots are one-of-a-kind with Dunn spending considerable time with each player to get a better under-standing of their own story and culture.

“To do a pair of boots, it takes on average two to six hours,” Dunn told Extra Time.

“The most important part of the process is sitting down with the player. If they’re Aboriginal they tell you their yarn and if they’re not Aboriginal we get to tell them a story about Aboriginal culture.

“Jamie Soward is wearing the ‘Welcome

Dance’ design and that symbolises walking out as an Indigenous player to celebrate as one. Segeyaro’s design, being non-Aboriginal, symbolises coming into our tribe and our people.”

Soward will be the only Indigenous player in the Panthers’ line-up to wear Dunn’s hand-painted boots with the other five players of non-Aboriginal descent.

Dunn revealed it meant more to him that non-Indigenous players were embracing his culture.

“To me as an Aboriginal artist, as funny as it sounds, to see a non-Aboriginal person in your jersey or boots means more to me,” he said.

“To me it’s not a jersey or boots, it’s about going out and being one of us and getting an understanding of our Aboriginal culture and what it’s like to feel and be Aboriginal.”

Dunn previously designed South Sydney’s Close The Gap jumpers a number of years ago and has also hand-painted headgear to be worn by the players as well as the official game ball.

“The importance of Close The Gap is educating people. Doing something like this may be simple but it’s very powerful,” Dunn said.

The NRL officially launched Close The Gap Round on Tuesday.

FEATURE STORY

NATHAN TAYLOR @natetaylor87

It has been a busy season for Panthers winger Josh Mansour but the man they call ‘Sauce’ is ready to help Penrith’s premiership charge as we enter the business end of the NRL season

‘Sauce’ is back on trackW ith Penrith’s injury toll

nearing breaking point, one Panther who is currently in outstanding form and step-

ping up to the plate is counting his lucky stars he’s still out there.

When newly re-signed winger Josh Mansour went down with a severe ankle injury during Penrith’s narrow win over the Broncos back in Round 18 many fans held their breath fearing the worst.

Mansour had been enjoying a breakout year during his third season in the top grade.

Playing in an off-contract year, he was headhunted by a number of rival clubs before deciding to remain at Penrith for two more years. Blues coach Laurie Daley also thought long and hard about bring-ing a rookie like Mansour into the Origin frame, with many league gurus calling for him to be included in the side.

The world was at his feet. But all that hard work and acclaim

almost went out the door during that cold Monday night about a month ago and even Mansour thought his sensational season had come to an end.

“It did look a bit scary at first but the medical team assured me I’d be back in back in two [weeks] and I was, so I was

very fortunate for that,” Mansour told Extra Time.

“The ankle still isn’t 100 per cent but I’ve got an outstanding medical team and I was fortunate enough to come back sooner rather than later. I just have to keep on doing the little things to it and hope-fully I’ll be 100 per cent soon.”

But it isn’t just Mansour’s on-field prow-

ess that’s getting all the attention of late, it’s the length of his hipster-style beard, which has ensured he’s copping plenty of ribbing from his teammates.

“It’s definitely staying, I’ve actually grown to like it,” he admitted.

“I was thinking of getting rid of it for charity or something like that, I’ve put that much effort into it.”

MOMENT WITH MOLAN

A lot of people started to write the Panthers off as soon as their injury crisis deepened in the last few weeks, heck they were writing them off because of their so-called ‘easy’ draw not long ago too. It seems people constantly want to create reasons why Penrith’s success this year is a fluke.

There are a lot of punters and commenta-tors out there who continually provide excuses for why Penrith are going well and not because they are a really well-coached side with talented players.

The naysayers seem to always say Penrith have had an easy draw. Penrith haven’t lost players to Origin. Penrith had a good run with injuries.

Well, that’s all been exposed. To lose five key players in a fortnight in

key positions would cripple even the best teams.

My favourite game last weekend was the clash between the Panthers and the Dragons.

The Dragons weren’t playing for pride last Sunday, they were playing in front of their home fans for a spot in the top eight.

Gareth Widdop and Benji Marshall had arguably their best game together the week before against Roosters, so they were going into this clash with Penrith

full of confidence. For the Panthers to run out and shut the Dragons down like they did was so impressive. Their scrambling defence, which at times involved six play-ers in one tackle, was evidence of a team doing it for each other.

I truly believe there is something happening at the foot of the Mountains. I know it sounds cliché but I think if Penrith lost five more players to injury they could easily bring up replacements from the

NSW Cup and Holden Cup and would still beat top eight teams in the NRL – they are that well-coached.

People always say the Panthers are a team of hardworkers with no superstars but I beg to differ. I think they are turning into a team of superstars.

I think the players in the Penrith side have what it takes to go all the way and that’s so exciting for not only Penrith fans but for rugby league.

Penrith just keep beating the odds

PRIDDO'S POINT

Despite having their backs against the wall for the past two weeks with an avalanche of injuries the Panthers now sit on 30 competition points. Venturing to Wollongong to face a desperate Dragons outfit hoping to keep their finals hopes alive and coming away with a well-deserved victory was a massive effort that must be commended as there were a lot of people out there, I will put my hand up, that thought the Panthers would struggle given the circumstances.

This now confirms that the Panthers will play in their first semi-final series since 2010, meaning Panthers fans you have at least another five games this year to pull on your jerseys in support of your team. Some big crowds over the next few home games to lift the boys as high up the table as possible is what is needed because if the boys can continue their form and grab a few more wins and cement a top four finish, the side would get two bites of the cherry.

The Cartwright family was dealt two major blows this week, the first with young Bryce being ruled out until next season with his ankle injury. Bryce has had a solid first season in the big time still with much to learn but at a young age fills fans with excitement for the years to come.

Uncle John fell on his sword as coach of the under-performing Titans, finishing with another loss, albeit a very spirited display, against the defending premiers, the Roosters.

While Bryce has many more years left in the game I am sure that in some capacity so will John. The service that the Cartwright family has given the game as a whole will always be remembered and who knows big Carty could do worse than end up back where it all started.

Josh Reynolds’ performance on the weekend finally got Robbie Farah off the back page for now. While his skipper and coach came out in support there are other opponents in the game that believe it is a bit of karma for being a grub. I believe he just plays the game and tries to do everything within his power to win a game.

Finals assured for Panthers

PANTHERRUMBLINGS

Despite missing two of their bigger names in Tim Grant and Matt Robinson, Penrith’s NSW Cup team recorded their biggest win of the season last Saturday afternoon thrashing North Sydney 68-12.

The Panthers scored the first try of the game through new centre Eddie Aiono, but it was the Bears who got off to a better start leaping to a 12-4 lead early on.

Penrith lacked some real urgency in the opening 20 minutes but it didn’t take them long to finally find their groove and start piling on the points.

The Panthers finished off the first half brilliantly shooting out to a 28-12 lead with Luke Capewell, Kieran Moss and Eto Nabuli doing a lot of the damage.

The home side were much more switched on to start the second half, running in a whopping 40 points in 40 minutes. Even the out of shape punter in the crowd could’ve scored against the Bears, that’s how bad they were.

Penrith, who clinched the minor premiership last week, will enjoy a much-deserved bye this weekend.

Meanwhile in the Holden Cup, the Panthers are still clinging on to eighth position after a thrilling win over the Dragons in Wollongong.

The Panthers won 26-18, but face the run into the finals without Sam Scarlett, who is facing between six and nine weeks out through suspension after being charged with a dangerous throw.

Robert Jennings

Three NRL clubs are said to be keen on the services of Willie Mason for next season, and one of them is the Panthers. Word is that the Knights may still re-sign Mason, but the Panthers and Dragons are also said to be interested in the reformed bad boy. The key to Mason’s signature could be whoever is willing to offer him a two-year contract over a one-year deal, as Mason has made it clear that he feels he could play on in both 2015 and 2016.

There is no doubt that outside of perhaps picking up a forward or two, the Panthers will be very quiet in the player market for next year. Officials feel they have the right team already assembled to challenge for a title next year, and the focus needs to be on 2016 with a host of players off contact at the end of 2015. Two of the club’s biggest young stars – Bryce Cartwright and Matt Moylan – will need to be re-signed at some point while Lewis Brown, Adam Docker, Jeremy Latimore, Sika Manu and Tyrone Peachey are among a swag of big name players who

will be on the market. It’s certainly going to be interesting times in the back office at the Panthers next year.

I want to give a special wrap to Penrith winger Josh Mansour. ‘Sauce’ always makes a point of thanking fans who’ve turned out to watch the Panthers, including at away games where he often

goes above and beyond to mix it with fans before leaving the field. Even at home, Mansour seems to be the player most active in thanking the supporters. There was a time at Penrith Stadium in the past when the entire squad, as a group, would head over to the eastern grandstand to thank the supporters after a win, and then acknowledge both hills before being cheered off by those in the western stand. That seems to have been lost a bit these days – it all appears a bit all over the place and some players don’t even make the effort.

John Cartwright may have stepped down as Gold Coast Titans coach, but that hasn’t stopped his son Jed signing a deal with the club. The 17-year-old has signed a two year contract with the Titans, and is likely to make his first grade debut at some point during that deal. The Panthers were said to be inter-ested in the youngster, but missed out on uniting him with his cousin Bryce at the foot of the Mountains.

Matt Robinson has confirmed that he will be heading to the Titans next year. The deal was done much earlier in the season but strangely, was never announced officially by the Titans.

In my opinion the NRL needs to be flexible when it comes to which grounds host matches in week one of the finals. While the league is adamant that subur-ban grounds won’t host finals games in Sydney, it seems ridiculous to consider playing a game between the Panthers and Cowboys, for example, at either ANZ Stadium or Allianz Stadium. The game would attract 15,000 fans at best, but would probably be a sellout at Penrith. Other codes can make late decisions when it comes to which venues host matches, why can’t the NRL do the same rather than having a hard and fast rule?

It’s Close The Gap round in the NRL this weekend and on Wednesday, James Segeyaro, Dean Whare, Isaac John and Wes Naiqama held a special group fitness training session with Indigenous adults and kids at Sportingbet Stadium. Good on the guys for helping out.

What a weekend the junior league has ahead of them.Saturday sees the start of the semi-finals in the U8 to U11 age

groups. This year these will be played at a central venue, Peter Van Hasselt Fields. A big day which will see five fields running all day from 9am. In all we will see 96 games of football played, and we hope all in the right spirit.

Sunday sees the second week of our 2nd & 3rd division semi-finals and the U6 and U7 Fun Day which will see all the registered players from these age groups at the one venue. Throughout the day we will see over 1200 kids playing football in the Fun Day. There will be jumping castles, player appearances and at the end of their game all the players will receive a T-shirt as a momento to finish off their season. There will be no scoring allowed on this day it’s all about having fun!

With all of this sees a wonderful group of volunteers who make themselves available to assist the Junior League to run the end of season events. This season we have seen a record number of people put up their hand to volunteer and we wholeheartedly say thank you.

We are also moving into the final stages of preparation for the upcoming Indigenous All Stars vs Penrith All Stars game which is scheduled for Sunday, September 21 during the Battle of the West fixture. Information will be sent to clubs shortly on the selection process for this game.

To the teams who have now finished their footy season, we hope you enjoyed the season and we can’t wait to see you back in 2015! Good luck to all teams playing in the final series games over the coming weeks.

What a busy weekend!

YVONNE PURTELL @penrith_juniors

R ugby league coaches and honesty don’t always go hand in hand. And who could blame them, with such media scrutiny on them, their teams and their clubs overall.

Coaches these days have learned the art of being media managers and PR specialists.

But back in 1991, Panthers coach Phil Gould produced the most open honesty you could imagine from a coach – declaring his team couldn’t win.

All of this came after Penrith had won the 1991 Grand Final, defeating Canberra 19-12 and sparking immense celebrations among the playing group, coaching staff and supporters.

Despite the season ending in the best possible way, the victory meant Penrith would have to back up for the World Club Challenge, to be played less than two weeks after the Grand Final. The game against English champions Wigan was to be played at Anfield in Liverpool.

On Tuesday, September 24 1991, Gould declared his side couldn’t and wouldn’t win.

“I’d like to see the game postponed but I under-stand that is not possible,” he said.

“The way things are going we will be battling to get a side together.”

A combination of Grand Final celebrations and injuries meant that the Panthers were never going to be up for the flight to England in such a short space of time. Even the master coach Gus Gould was no chance of inspiring his troops against Wigan.

“I can’t imagine us doing much training this week,” Gould admitted in the lead-up to the game.

Despite initial reports that halfback and captain Greg Alexander wouldn’t make the trip, he did end up leading the side into the game.

The squad for the match was: Greg Barwick, Darren Willis, Graeme Bradley, Brad Izzard, Graham Mackay, Steve Carter, Greg Alexander, Brandon Lee, Royce Simmons, Paul Dunn, Paul Clarke, John Cart-wright, Colin van der Voort, Ben Alexander, Grant Izzard, Tony Xuereb and Paul Smith.

It turns out Gould was right – the Panthers didn’t win that day, but they certainly weren’t as embar-rassed as many predicted.

With Gould’s dire warning about his side’s prepara-tion, many expected the Panthers to be thrashed by

Wigan, but Penrith hung in there and was defeated 21-4. Darren Willis scored Penrith’s only try.

A crowd of 20,152 watched the game at Anfield, with thousands of Panthers fans eagerly following the game back home in the middle of the night.

Victory in the 1991 World Club Challenge wasn’t to be, but the match will be remembered for the incredible build-up, a coach writing off his team and a club voicing its opposition to the game even going ahead.

For the record, the Panthers have never won a World Club Challenge – they were also defeated in the match following their 2003 title success.

Plum prepares for a hit-up against the Knights in round one

We all love big ‘Plummy’

He may not be the biggest name in rugby league but Nigel Plum has certainly become one of the most reliable players in Penrith’s squad, with a mix of experience, toughness and passion for the club. There’s no doubt we all love ‘Plummy’
