Lake County Haven provides food,
safety, shelter, counseling and life-
skills training to women and children
who are trying to find a path out of
homelessness. Each and every day,
our residents work to rebuild their
lives. For many, it is a constant,
uphill struggle. Here is...
One Woman’s Journey.
A Bump in the Road
Sophia never had a family. Not in any
real sense of the word. Her earliest
memories are of emotional and
physical abuse. It was so bad that by
age 3, she was sent to live with her
aunt to escape the abuse. But what
could have saved her, only brought
more pain and suffering. Sophia was
told over and over again that her
parents did not love her, that they
abandoned her because they did not
want her.
This led Sophia down a dark and
dangerous path of despair. Drugs
were the only thing that helped her
manage the painful emotions she
kept deep down inside. Eventually,
Sophia found herself living in an
abandoned building, starving and
desperate. She imagined she would
have died in that building like so
many others she’d seen.
Stopping for Directions
But with a baby boy to care for,
Sophia found the strength to go to
rehab. She was there long enough to
clear her mind from chemicals, but
still had no place to go. No way to
support herself and her son. This is
when she was brought to Lake
County Haven. Now, Sophia was
surrounded by love and support. For
the first time, she did not feel alone
in the world. She got a full time job,
paid off her debt, and has opened a
savings account with a nest-egg for
her and her son.
The Path Ahead
Sophia is getting ready to graduate
our program. She and her son are
doing great and have found a lovely
little home for just the two of them.
Her little one will be starting school
soon, and Sophia has plans to do the
same. We wish them the best of luck
in their new adventure.
