L’avion d’Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, dont la disparition le 31 juillet 1944, n’a jamais étéélucidée, aurait été abattu par un un pilote de chasse de la Luftwaffe, selon le journal LaProvence, qui cite l’aviateur.Horst Rippert, 88 ans, en poste en Provence deux semaines avant le débarquement deProvence, a raconté à La Provence que c’est en regagnant sa base, qu’il a aperçu un avionLightning volant vers Marseille, trois mille mètres en dessus de lui.

élucidée, aurait été abattu par un un pilotede chasse de la Luftwaffe, a indiqué,samedi 15 mars, le journal La Provence, quicite l’aviateur.“Après l’avoir suivi, je mesuis dit, si tu fous pas le camp, je vais te canarder. J’ai tiré, je l’ai touché, le zincs’est abîmé. Droit dans l’eau. Le pilote, je ne l’ai pas vu. C’est après que j’ai apprisque c’était Saint-Exupéry”, a raconté Horst Rippert, âgé aujourd’hui de 88 ans.

En poste en Provence deux semaines avant le débarquement de Provence (15 août1944), l’ancien aviateur allemand a expliqué à La Provence que c’est en regagnant sabase, qu’il a aperçu un avion d’observation Lightning P-38 volant vers Marseille, troismille mètres en dessus de lui. M. Rippert a confié qu’il “a espéré, qu’il espèretoujours que ce n’était pas lui”, car, “dans notre jeunesse nous l’avions tous lu, onadorait ses bouquins”.

Hors Rippert, qui fut journaliste à la ZDF a été retrouvé au terme d’une longueenquête, menée par un plongeur marseillais Luc Vanrell, et par le fondateur d’uneassociation de recherches d’avions perdus pendant la guerre, Lino von Gartzen. Deuxans après la découverte en 1998, d’une gourmette au nom de “Saint-Ex”, remontéedans les filets d’un pêcheur au large de Marseille, Luc Vanrell retrouvait des débrisde Ligthning et démontrait qu’ils provenaient de l’avion de l’écrivain. Les morceauxde l’épave étaient remontés à la surface trois ans plus tard par la sociétéd’exploration et de travaux sous-marins Comex. Un numéro de série sur la carlinguepermettait d’identifier l’appareil.

Parti le 31 juillet 1944 de Borgo, en Haute-Corse, à bord de son Lightning P38 pourune mission de reconnaissance et d’observation photographique pour préparer ledébarquement de Provence, Saint-Exupéry n’était jamais rentré à sa base. Lesmorceaux de l’avion de l’auteur du “Petit Prince” et de “Pilote de guerre” ont étéremis en juin 2004 au musée de l’Air et de l’Espace du Bourget.

Anson Dorrance, former Villa St. Jean soccer star and senior-year thespian, has beenelected to the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame. Anson attended the Villa for four years,according to our records, and graduated in 1969. He then went to the University of NorthCarolina and fame.

The wire services, predictably, neglected to mention Anson’s distant Villa days. Anexcerpt:

After the National Soccer Hall of Fame announced Mondaythat Anson Dorrance has been elected, the North Carolinawomen’s soccer coach spent of the day answeringcongratulatory e-mail from former players.“I just kept thanking them for coming to play for me,”Dorrance said. “Without them, no way we’d be the dominantprogram that we are. Our success is because of them, … andit’s just a wonderful feeling, knowing so many of your playersfeel so good for you.”

Dorrance, whose Tar Heels have won 19 national titles in 28seasons, joins U.S. national team veteran Hugo Perez in theHall, which is located in Oneonta, N.Y.

“Anson Dorrance has set an unbelievable standard for American soccer coaches,” Hallpresident Steve Bauman said in a release.

Dorrance, a 1974 UNC graduate, started as men’s coach in 1976. Starting in 1979, hecoached UNC’s men and women, becoming the women’s coach exclusively after the 1988season.

As women’s coach, his record is an NCAA best in wins (648-32-19) and in winningpercentage (.941). He also served as coach of the U.S. women’s national team for eightyears, compiling a 65-22-5 record.

Dorrance learned he was elected last week but told only his wife and mother at therequest of the Hall. He said getting such a recognition by his peers was “wonderfullyflattering,” and he cherished the e-mails and calls he received.

“It’s just a wonderfully warm feeling to know that you’ve got so many people that areout there who are part of a greater family,” he said. “Anyone that has coached knows …that after a while, wins and losses pale in comparison to the appreciation of being partof the lives of so many wonderful people.”

Alain Vircondelet thinks that all started from a lunch to New York, thesummer 1942, between the writer and his American editor, Eugene Reynal, who suggeststo him writing a tale for children.

This was brought to our attention by Jim Kelly, Villa class of ’69. It’s on ebay (for thetime being anyway) here.In the event it goes away (as all things, presumably, do on ebay), I’ve included the picturehere.

According to the seller, the card is circa 1910, though I could discern no evidence for thatdate on the images provided. Does anyone have any more information on it? The seller islocated in Israel. The cost? $5.50 and another $2.50 shipping.

Saint-Exupery’s Lockheed P-38 Lightning

Honoring the discoverer of Saint-Exupery’s plane….Posted on 01/23/2008 by villastjean

This is a bit complicated but you’ll recall the mystery of Saint Exupery’s 1944 crash wassolved several years ago when a fisherman from Corsica found jewelry identified asbelonging to the famous aviator (and Villa St. Jean student).

His discovery provoked a firestorm ofcontroversy (see here for a backgroundsummary) In short, the location of theplane was distant from his planned route.

“Well, it could be because the presence ofSaint-Exupery’s plane so far from itsplanned route, with evidence of a verticalcrash, lends credence to anuncomfortable hypothesis – that the warhero may have deliberately plunged his Lockheed Lightning aircraft into theMediterranean Sea.”

Now, thanks to Jean Remy, we learn that the fisherman, Jean-Claude Bianco, is beingawarded the Legion of Honor.

Trouver un bijou de 38 grammes en pleine mer, c’est un coup de chance inouï. Plus deneuf ans après sa découverte, Jean-Claude Bianco, 63 ans, n’en est toujours pas revenu.La photo de la gourmette trône sur la commode de son cabanon, niché dans la calanquemarseillaise de Sormiou. Parti de Borgo (Corse), l’écrivain et aviateur avait disparu le 31juillet 1944, lors d’une mission de reconnaissance photographique effectuée versGrenoble pour les Alliés.

J’ai su tout de suite que cette découverte allait faire du bruit, mais pas qu’on mettrait maparole en doute, raconte le pêcheur. Le 28 octobre 1998, la nouvelle fait la une de LaProvence. souvenirs.Les bons moments, ce sont les recherches obstinées, entreprises notamment avec Henri-Germain Delauze, patron de la Comex, une société marseillaise d’exploration sous-marine, et Philippe Castellano, un technicien hospitalier attaché à sauver le souvenir despilotes disparus, mais aussi avec Pierre Becker, PDG de la société Géocéan (travauxmaritimes extrêmes) et Françoise Bastide, passionnée de l’œuvre de Saint-Exupéry.

Dès la découverte, nous avons voulu trouver l’avion. Pendant deux ans, nous avonspartagé espoirs et déceptions. Humainement, cette aventure nous a soudés, raconte Jean-Claude Bianco.Les mauvais souvenirs datent du moment où Frédéric d’Agay, héritier de l’écrivain etsecrétaire de la Fondation Antoine-de-Saint-Exupéry, s’est manifesté. Dès octobre 1998,il récupère la gourmette, avant toute expertise officielle, puis met en doute sonauthenticité, affirmant que l’écrivain n’en portait pas. En janvier 1999, le magazineScience et Vie titre sur « l’affaire de la fausse gourmette. Le doute s’installe. On m’a faitpasser pour un faussaire, un menteur. Des amis rigolaient : Alors, Jean-Claude, tu faisdans la bijouterie maintenant ? Les autres souriaient en coin. Cela me faisait mal, racontele pêcheur. En 1999, il va se lancer dans une bataille juridique pour rétablir son honneur.En avril 2004, la direction départementale des affaires maritimes authentifie l’avion deSaint-Exupéry d’après les débris retrouvés par un plongeur, Luc Vanrell, près de l’île duRiou. J’en ai eu les larmes aux yeux. Cela prouvait enfin que je n’avais pas menti, souritJean-Claude Bianco, qui a écrit un livre, paru en juin 2006, histoire de mettre les pointssur les i à ceux qui doutent encore.La Légion d’honneur que lui remettra prochainement le président de la RépubliqueNicolas Sarkozy, il en est fier : Après avoir été traîné dans la boue, me voilà à l’Élysée !Cela récompense mes efforts pour rétablir la vérité, savoure Jean-Claude Bianco, qui nenourrit plus d’amertume.

Fin 2005, la famille d’Agay a reconnu ma découverte dans une lettre. Mêmediplomatiques, ces excuses me suffisent, dit le pêcheur à la retraite, dont la vie a changédepuis cette histoire. Curieux de connaître le bonhomme, il s’est plongé dans desbiographies de Saint-Exupéry et a découvert l’écriture vraie et profonde du Petit Prince etde Vol de nuit, qu’il n’avait jamais lus. Il a aussi gagné en notoriété. Régulièrement, jeraconte mon histoire dans les écoles de la région.

Les passants m’interpellent dans la rue, et lorsque des médias veulent faire un reportagedans les calanques, l’office de tourisme m’appelle. Cela fait plaisir, sourit Jean-ClaudeBianco. Très vite, la nouvelle fait le tour du monde et une polémique se déclenche, les héritiers del’écrivain-aviateur contestant l’authenticité du bijou. Mais le 23 mai 2000, le plongeurLuc Vanrell découvre près de l’île du Riou les débris d’un avion qui sera identifié quatreans plus tard comme étant celui de l’écrivain.

Lawler, Childs (vsj ’68) defy age, race across AlpsPosted on 01/02/2008 by villastjean

Should you need inspiration for your New Year’s resolution, consider the work of BrianLawler and Michael Childs. The two Villa alumni participated in the 2007 Gore-TexTransalpine Run from Oberstdorf Germany to Latsch, Italy via Austria and Switzerland.That’s an eight-day alpine run in, through, and over the Alps for 160 miles, with a total of42,000 feet elevation gain.The competition was held this past September.
