6:00PM SUNDAY VESPERS & BENEDICTION

RESUME OCTOBER 4

The Second Plenary Council of Baltimore (1868) decreed (no. 379) that complete vespers be sung on Sundays and feasts in all churches, as far as pos-sible, after the Roman fashion, and that vespers never be replaced by other exercises of piety; "for the solemn worship approved by bishops of the Church and flourishing through so many centuries must be deemed pleasing to Almighty God.”

LETTER FROM CANON JASON APPLE On Friday, September 25, newly-ordained Canon Jason Apple offered a Solemn High Mass in honor of the Holy Infant King. Dear faithful of the Shrine of Christ the King,

Celebrating my First Solemn Mass at the Shrine as the votive Mass of the Nativity of our Infant King filled my heart with joy. The music of the Mass was so beautiful, too. I enjoyed meeting those who come to the Shrine, and I assure you that I include you all in my prayers. You welcomed me so warmly, and I am very grateful for the recep-tion you prepared as well. Thank you all! Please, keep me in your prayers, too.

In Christ the King,

Canon Jason T. Apple

WHAT IS THE HOLY ROSARY?

The Rosary is made up of mental and vocal prayer. In the Holy Rosary mental prayer is the meditation of the chief mysteries of the life, death, and glory of Jesus Christ and His Blessed Mother. Meditation is the form of prayer by which, using our mind and imagination to consider a truth, our will is moved to love it, and we form resolutions to imitate it in our own lives. Vocal prayer consists in reciting fifteen decades of the Hail Mary, each decade beginning with an Our Father and ending with the Glory be, and the Fatima prayer (“O my Jesus forgive us our sins…”), as was recommended by Our Blessed Mother herself. The Holy Rosary is a blessed blending of mental and vocal prayer by which we honor and learn to imitate the mys-teries and the virtues of the life, passion, death, and glory of Jesus and Mary. The word Rosary meaning “crown of roses,” the Rosary is a spiritual bouquet, given by the Blessed Virgin Mary herself to Saint Dominic in the early 13th century, by which we honor our Mary as the Mother of God, we ask her to ob-tain for us from her Divine Son special graces and heavenly favors, and we thank her for her maternal in-tercession.

“Among all the devotions approved by the Church, none has been favored by so many miracles as the devotion of the most Holy Rosary.” (Blessed Pius IX)

October 7 is the anniversary of the glorious victory won in 1571 by the Catholic forces over the Turkish fleet at Lepanto. This tri-umph was universally attributed to the powerful intercession of the Mother of God, whom Pope Saint Pius V, rosary in hand, fer-vently invoked along with the whole body of the Catholic faithful. In thanksgiving, a liturgical feast in honor of Our Lady was insti-tuted on the first Sunday of October. Pope Clement XI attributed the Christian victory in 1716 over the Turkish invading armies in Hungary to the motherly protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the feast was extended to the whole Church. Pope Leo XIII, during some troublesome times for the Church, urged all the faithful throughout the world to frequently recite the Holy Ro-sary. He raised the dignity of this solemn feast day and added to the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary the invocation “Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, pray for us!”

INSTITUTE OF CHRIST THE KING SOVEREIGN PRIEST † 06

In honor of the Divine Infant King a Votive High Mass of the Nativity is celebrated at the Shrine at 7:00 pm on the 25th day of every month. In preparation for this monthly commemoration of the Infant King, a Novena prayer in His honor is recited after daily Mass from the 17th through the 25th of every month.

“The more you honor Me, the more I will bless you.” Here, the Divine Infant King, real Symbol for Truth Lived in Charity, will be the center of liturgical worship and devo-tion. A seventeenth century statue of the Divine Infant King, donated by a generous benefac-tor, has been solemnly crowned and enthroned above the High altar of the Shrine by His Emi-nence Francis Cardinal George in December 2007.

The Shrine of Christ the King was built in 1923 by renowned architect Henry Schlacks as St. Clara Church. Having barely escaped the wrecking ball, this magnificent historic landmark has been given to the care of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. With only provisional furnishings, the Shrine is already a haven for the transcendent beauty of the Ex-traordinary Form of the Latin Rite, dear to our beloved Pope Benedict XVI.

HOLY INFANT KING NOVENA

Novena Prayer

O Divine Infant Jesus, I have recourse to Thee. Please, through Thy Blessed Mother, assist me in this necessity (mention intention here), because I firmly believe that Thy Divinity can help me. I hope with confidence to obtain thy holy grace. I love Thee with all my heart and with all the strength of my soul. I repent sincerely of my sins and I beg Thee, O Good Jesus, to grant me the strength to triumph over them. I resolve never more to offend Thee and I come to offer myself to Thee with the intention of enduring everything rather than to displease Thee. Henceforth, I desire to serve Thee with fidelity and, for the love of Thee, O Divine Infant, I will love my neighbor as myself. All powerful Infant, O Jesus, I implore Thee again, assist me in this need. Grant me the grace of possessing Thee eternally with Mary and Joseph and of adoring Thee with the angels in the heavenly court. Amen.
