External Judging At the July meeting members discussed having images for the Advanced Grade judged by an external judge. John Blessas being the Chair of the Judges Executive arranged for Stan Bowels PSQA – Redcliffe (Aspley Camera Club) to judge images submitted and critique was presented to members at the recent August meeting.

Stan provided a print-out of his comments and these were read out at the meeting while each image submitted was displayed digitally for attendees.

Stan’s opening paragraph stated… Hello John and all the members of the Mackay Club. It has been a real pleasure to have looked at your shots. Whenever I do a judging, I will always show them to some of my mates, one being my really good mate Damian Smith who is an extremely brilliant portrait photographer. Many of his shots are featured in many sought after calendars. His first statement was that this must be a really beaut club. I quite loved your shots too. Because your shots are so special, I have been happy not to use the bronze award. Even our entries officers from Aspley Club loved your shots. We have a husband and wife team. I asked them which photo they thought I would pick as the best. They thought I would pick out “Smile” and I told them no for the reasons I have suggested. I asked them again and then they said the one I have picked. Congratulations to a special club.

The image that was awarded Gold and Photo of the Month was submitted by Inge Blessas, “Devotion”. Stan thought the image was creative and interesting, he felt the flare on the left hand side of the photo added to the image and that one would look at the beautiful face the way it had been lit. He wondered what the lady was thinking; he loved the composition of the shot with the positioning between the two windows and the spacing around her. Congratulations Inge it is a beautiful image. Feedback received from this process has been very positive with those members having received the judge’s comments thinking that this was well done and could be extended to other grades in the future.

Thanks John for organising, and a special thanks to Damian for setting this up on the web page. Members in Advanced Grade are welcome to again submit 3 images for external judging for next month’s meeting.

31st August 2018 Regional PSQ Photographic Weekend / Mini Convention August 31st – September 2nd, 2018. Event is hosted by Cairns Photographic Society Inc. and includes mini workshops and photo shoots, astro photography, sunrise photography and lots of fun. Early bird special for the event is $105 if paid before 10th August (normal fee $120). More information can be found on the Cairns Photographic Society Website.

North Queensland Inter-Club Competition – “Mirror/s in the Park”

Mackay Camera Club are assisting with this Inter-Club Competition and details are on our web page. Each Club are to submit 10 images, judging will be by a panel of 3 judges awarding 1 to 5 per image. Images are to include a mirror and/or a reflection in the mirror. Images also are to be taken in a park and can be in colour or monochrome. Closing date for images is Wednesday 15 August 2018. If you wish to participate please email your images to Damian (damo@damophoto.net) by the above closing date. Long Exposure Outing

Members have asked for another outing to practice some long exposure as last outing the weather was a little dismal. Sunday 19 August has been assigned for this outing, hope you can make it, meeting time is 5.30am at Eimeo Beach Surf club. Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photo Walk 2018

On the first Saturday of October each year, photographers and enthusiasts around the world get out their cameras and meet up at a designated location in their town to walk around and take photographs, socialize, make new friends, win prizes, and be a part of a great cause during Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photowalk®. Last year marked the ten-year anniversary and was the largest walk yet. It doesn’t matter what continent you are on, where you are in your photography journey, or what type of camera or phone you use, you can take part in this year’s event! Planning Meeting – Mackay Show Photography Competition

An invite has been extended to Creative Shots Photo Club to attend a meeting to discuss future planning of the Mackay Show Photography Competition. Members of our Club who would also like to have an input are invited to attend. The meeting will be held on Thursday 9th August 2018 at 60 Wellington Street commencing at 7.00pm. If you want to see changes please come along and tell us what your thoughts are.
