the system
Repair and restoration works are also undertaken from platforms making entire restoration projects scaffold-free

HOW IT WORKS
Cleaning operatives work from a Vacuum Cabin, attached to a telescopic arm mounted on a specially adapted truck
An ultra-fine powder is projected under low pressure and removes accumulated pollution deposits without affecting the masonry beneath
Powerful fans at the rear of the cabin capture the spent powder and dust and transfer it to ground level where it is held in containers before being removed for recycling
The boom can reach up to 42 metres (12 floors) from ground level
For high-rise buildings, such as the 56-storey MetLife skyscraper in New York (cleaned in 2001) the cabin is suspended from outriggers secured to the roof
A smaller machine is available for buildings in narrow streets or with other access limitations
The entire process is extremely quick and up to 200m2 can be cleaned in a working day
Traffic management signage put into position
The working site is established and equipment delivered
Pedestrian tunnel erected to ensure thoroughfares remain accessible
All power supplied by Thomann-Hanry - no services required from clients
Work commences within two hours of arrival on the first morning

The façade gommage® patented system will remove decades of accumulated dirt and pollution that can tarnish the appearance of your building.
It has a proven record cleaning natural stone, brick, terracotta, alabaster and polychrome surfaces for property managers and conservationists worldwide.
proven technologyThe ultra-fine cleaning powder is softer than the masonry surfaces being cleaned but strong enough to weaken dirt without causing damage. The dirt is rubbed away leaving the underlying surface intact.

MARC CROSS, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR: BUILDING CONSULTANCY - HARTNELL TAYLOR COOK
Despite the presence of exceptionally high levels of pollution which had accumulated on the limestone façade over many years, Thomann-Hanry was able to clean the entire seven storey building in just two days. They organised all the permits and managed the site so that the work could be undertaken on one of London’s busiest streets without disrupting traffic, pedestrians, retailers or office workers. Their operation was excellent and best of all, the building’s appearance was transformed.

Unlike other masonry cleaning systems, façade gommage® offers an extremely eco-friendly cleaning solution. The process does not require water or chemicals and the powders that are used are either biodegradable or have been made from recycled materials. The spent powder and the dirt from the building are eventually recycled for inclusion within Type 1 aggregate.

JONATHAN BYRNE, CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER - ROYAL AERONAUTICAL SOCIETY
We chose Thomann-Hanry to clean our building because we needed a system that would transform its appearance quickly, in preparation for our role as ‘Japan House’ hosting Japan’s guests and VIPs during the London Olympics.
The work was completed in a fraction of the time of the alternatives with no disruption to normal business activities during the clean and we were delighted with the results.

In addition to stone cleaning, Thomann-Hanry also offers repair and restoration services.
It is not usually necessary to scaffold a building simply because restoration work is required. Thomann-Hanry has demonstrated that following a clean, virtually all types of work can be undertaken from platforms and without the need for scaffold.
Many buildings in the City and in the West End have benefited from restoration without scaffold. On Fleet Street, Cornhill, King William Street, London Bridge and other locations in the City, dentil repairs, stone indents, repointing, asphalt replacement, painting, lead work, mastic replacement and bird proofing have all been under-taken this way. Similar works have been carried out at many locations in the West End including at the London Marriott Hotel Park Lane where more than 200 windows over seven storeys were refurbished from platforms.

Our associated practice is able to undertake detailed fabric and structural surveys of the façade to produce an annotated photographic report. Additionally, we can provide a specification and schedule of maintenance and repair works for incorporation into maintenance and planning budgets. We also provide an in-house design and inspection service for any structural issues relating to the façade and its ongoing integrity.

After treatment
Concrete paving before treatment with Aqua Fend
All-in-one invisible protection against water, oil, dirt, pollution & graffitiOnce building surfaces have been cleaned and restored they should be protected against future weathering and deterioration.
The primary concern is to prevent the build-up of dirt particles and damp which can react with the masonry and reduce its life. Protecting surfaces also extends the cleaning cycle.
Aqua Fend impregnation products offer the highest grade of surface protection. Aqua Fend effectively protects concrete and stone surfaces, forming an impenetrable but breathable barrier against surface contaminants without affecting surface colour.
As the capillaries of the surface are protected, contaminants will literally sit on the surface top, allowing basic cleaning operations to remove the otherwise problematic blemishes. Pollution, oil, grime, grease, bird dropping, algae and other surface contaminants are no longer a problem or expensive to remedy with Aqua Fend treatments.
Aqua Fend offers a quick return on investment in both budget saving and area aesthetics and comes with a 15 year manufacturer’s guarantee.

AUSTRALIA HOUSELOCATION: ALDWYCH, LONDON WC2CLIENT: AUSTRALIAN OVERSEAS PROPERTY OFFICE SUBSTRATE: PORTLAND STONE
SURFACE AREA: 6,500m²DURATION: 20 DAYSCATEGORY: PUBLIC BUILDINGS
Following Thomann-Hanry’s survey on this Grade II Listed building, the company was appointed by The Australian High Commission (AHC) to undertake a restoration programme, for completion within a tight six-week deadline in time for the Olympics. Works included façade cleaning, stone repairs, restoring high level bronze statues, regilding lettering at the entrance and repainting wrought iron gates. The AHC were not prepared to take any risks with security by scaffolding the 6,500m2 structure and so Thomann-Hanry undertook all these works from platforms.

“Restoration work does not come much more high-profile than this! Land Securities is the largest property company in the UK with a 40 metre high Head Office building on one of London’s busiest streets and retail tenants below, so when Thomann-Hanry approached us saying they could not only clean all the stone, aluminium and glazing from platforms but replace all sealant and defective grout without scaffold as well, we were intrigued. Their systems performed exactly as they said they would and were a perfect fit with our image as an industry leader.” Eamon Condon - Contract Administrator

The campus at the LSE was restored during term-time despite the presence of the large student population through-out the works. Façade cleaning, lead work repairs, stone restoration, repointing and painting were all carried out from platforms. This removed the potential danger and security risks that scaffold would have presented and enabled university studies to continue uninterrupted.

“Thomann-Hanry’s façade gommage® cleaning system has transformed the front elevation of 29-30 Cornhill and their work repairing worn stone and replacing over three hundred glazed bricks to the rear lightwell and upper terraces, has made an important contribution to restoring the appeal of our building.” Peter Hart, Director - Optimum Property Management

“Thomann-Hanry’s façade gommage® system is the perfect solution for cleaning the exterior of hotels. Their unique system meant we were able to clean three elevations includ-ing the main entrance without disruption to our guests and we were able to keep all our rooms available. The set-up and cleaning process is remarkably quick as they do not use scaffold and most importantly, the results are outstanding.”Andrew Churchill – Chief Engineer
