What is Extensive Reading?

We believe that reading is an essential tool for building students’ knowledge, developing imagination and

analytical skills. Coincidently, reading can also be a pleasant contribution to your family traditions.

Exupery International School supports the ‘extensive reading approach’, which involves students reading

books for general understanding, with the intention of enjoying the texts.

Students are allowed to choose the books they read depending on their interests. In this way, students are

encouraged to read for pleasure and should become better readers.

The main objective of undertaking an extensive reading approach is to get students reading in English, their

mother tongue and first/ second foreign language, and getting pleasure from the process.

An increase in reading fluency and spending time with parents – which contributes to the development of

child’s emotional bond with parents - should be another objective. Because of this, reading should be a

pleasurable activity for the student, promoted as much as possible by the adults.

The characteristics of an extensive reading approach

Reading material

Reading for pleasure requires a large selection of books that should be available for students to choose

from at their level. Exupery International School teachers have made the lists of literature to assist in

choosing from a wide range of resources.

However, the students’ own initiative is appreciated.

Student’s choice

Students choose what they want to read based on their interests. If a student finds a book is too difficult or

they do not enjoy it, they can exchange it for another one.

Reading for pleasure and information

In extensive reading, the students are reading principally for the content of the texts.

Independent reading or reading with parents/ friends

Extensive reading can be an activity that students do independently or together with their parents/ friends.

Small discussions after reading the book will help students to share their emotions, dreams and sometimes

frustrations.

The older students will definitely appreciate if the parents choose to read the same book, and then discuss

the plot, characters, or the language.

Page 4: Extensive - exupery.lv fileIndependent reading or reading with parents/ friends Extensive reading can be an activity that students do independently or together with their parents

4

Language level

The vocabulary and grammar of the books that students read should not pose a difficulty. The objective of

an extensive reading programme is to encourage reading fluency, so students should not be stopping

frequently because they do not understand a passage. However, the books should not be too easy as this

may well demotivate students, who feel they are getting nothing out of the books.

Use of dictionaries

Reading becomes a chore if students think they have to stop and look up every unfamiliar word in a

dictionary. The students should not be forced to look for translations of every word they do not

understand. Instead of interrupting their flow, students can be encouraged to jot down the words they

come across in a vocabulary notebook, and they can look them up after they have finished reading.

Record keeping

The students can keep a record of the characters and the plot of the story they are reading, but this is not

the key objective of the extensive reading.

Day & Bamford (1998) highlight the benefits that have been gained by the undertaking of extensive

reading, which include gains in reading and writing proficiency, oral skills and vocabulary, an increase in

motivation and positive affect.

More information about extensive reading is available here

http://nflrc.hawaii.edu/rfl/October2002/day/day.html

Capturing student interest is the key.

Let us keep them engaged in reading!
