Working habits and tips Keep your sources at a distance
Talk to your sources – don’t let them dictate to you Remember that they are not absolute truths – you should
evaluate them not let them control you Photocopy the title page of every book you borrow from
the library This will save you valuable time later on – you will need the full
title, place and date of publication later on. Start building the bibliography right away
Time saving! Once you quote someone put in a reference right away
This way you won’t have to look for the source later on And remember ... use footnotes!
Top tips: соблюдение сроков

Get your parents involved. It helps to have their experience and support and the occasional nag session

The Research Question
Is it suitable? Can it be asked and answered? Is it worthwhile to answer?
Dangerous research questions: Those that are too wide. Those that are “obivous.” Those that you can not answer due to lack of sources
available to you. Those that are too narrow. Those that are subjective. Those that are purely hypothetical (pseudo history)
Forms of Research
Don’t restrict yourself to a narrative! The point of a research essay is not simply to
tell a story – regardless of whether it has a happy ending or not.
Comparitive essay Compare and contrast examples A and B with
regards to question X. Bibliographical essay
What has the historiagraphical development been like in a certain narrow topic.
Evaluating Sources
CARRDSS Credibility Accuracy Reliability Relevance Date Source Scope & purpose

Title Page (APA) APA format requires
a Title Page – and so does the IB EE.
Click here for an actual, more detailed example: APA Title Page.
Contents Page (APA)
Comes after the Abstract and lists all the pages :
- Title page- Abstract- Essay (naming sections
if appropriate)- Works Cited- Appendices, if any Click to see
real example.
References (APA) List only those
sources you quote from or summarize or refer to in your essay.
Here is a real example with more instructions: APA References. Another explanatory example from a web site: APA References
Abstract (APA)
Maximum 300 words. Write your Abstract
after you’ve finished your paper.
Don’t count these words in your total word count.
Page number will be “2” with a few words of the title in front of it.
Parenthetical (in text) citations (APA)
Author mentioned in sentence…as Shelton (2006) stated (p. 12). Author’s name not given in sentence…is strongly argued (Shelton, 2003, p. 102). Two authors say the same thing…generally agreed (Shelton, 2006; Bell, 2007). No author’s name is in the citation…evidence is abundant (“Traffic,” 2007, p. 4).
