St. Paul FFA was founded on March 13, 1957. For my extended application project I collaborated with my FFA
chapter to put on a honorary dinner for those that started St. Paul FFA. It was my job to plan the course of the night. To help me with this I reached to my community mentor, Susan Coleman. Together we came up with a invitation, program, menu, and gift for the charter members. I also reached out to many other community members to help
me find the charter members and create a guest list. I consider the night a great success and hope that in the
future St. Paul continues to honor those that started our FFA chapter.

THE CHURCH AS A SYMBOL OF HOPE 2
The Church as a Symbol of Hope in George Orwell‟s 1984 and in Current Society
In 1984, George Orwell incorporates the theme “the place where there is no darkness”, which symbolizes hope and sanctuary in our world and in Orwell‟s (Orwell, 1949). This symbol acts as the St. Clement’s Dane in the book and the Church in our world. Both of these assume the role of a place to seek sanctuary from the darkness. Orwell uses the painting of St. Clement’s Dane as a mask for the telescreen, causing Winston to feel safe when in reality his every move remained monitored. Similarly the Church acts as a mask to our sins because humans feel guilt for the sins they have committed and the Church provides them with a way to clean that guilt from their bodies. Orwell uses many literary elements to demonstrate how the Church falsely symbolizes “the place where there is no darkness”, but prominently the readers see diction, tone, and imagery (Orwell, 1949). He uses diction in the form of a song to emphasize his words of hope before death. And from the song comes a hopeful tone to demonstrate the happy past society of Oceania. This leads to very dark imagery of light leading to death. With the use of these elements Orwell changes the audience's perspective on light to resemble danger instead of safety. The Church very commonly symbolizes safety and light. Orwell takes that symbol and uses it in his book. St. Clement’s Dane symbolizes safety because the room it hung in existed as a place of safety for Wilson and Julia. “’There's no telescreen!’ he could not help murmuring” (Orwell, 1949). With no telescreen Winston and Julia gained privacy which made the room a place of safety. The Party manipulated its citizens through the telescreens and never gave them a moment for privacy. By walking into Mr. Charrington’s shop Winston stepped into the church of St. Clement’s and into a place of sanctuary.
