Diatom collections date back to the earliest works in the filed of diatomology. To prepare slides and deposit them in collections are the first steps to explore the richness of taxa and increase our knowledge on diatoms in general. In the early age of diatomology, the most prominent experts had contacts and sent their own materials to each other. Thanks to this practice, many rare, interesting taxa have become available for later study in the large collections. (http://www.isdr.org/index.php/links/, http://home.planet.nl/~wolf0334/). Recently such kind of exchanging seems less intensive; the diatom collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum received only a few slides after the death of our famous diatomist, József Pantocsek. We hit upon the idea of a Japanese scientist, Akihiri Tuji, who presented his data using an exiccata (Tuji 2007). He submitted the first part of the Japanise exsiccata on 18th May 2007 with 20 slides, and posted it as a present to our collection. When his material arrived at the Botanical Department, we were in the process of preparing a presentation for the Workshop “Ecology & taxonomy of benthic diatoms in oligotrophic freshwater habitats”, following on the invitation of Marco Cantonati. To present the most characteristic diatom taxa of mires in an Exsiccata seemed a perfect way of demonstration. This exsiccata set shows a selection of mire diatom species from the Apusenii Mountains, Romania. All of the raw materials are available in the Collectio of Algarum of BP. Methods The material was treated with hot hydrogen peroxide, nitric acid and the cleaned material was mounted in Zrax (refractive index is 1.7). For light microscope analysis, a LEICA DM LB2 was used (100 X HCX PLAN APO, and Fujifilm Digital Camera FinePix S2 Pro). Scanning electron microscopy was performed with a Hitachi S-2600N. AlgaTerra Information System was used for names of taxa and checks their validity (Jahn & Kusber 2008). We would like expressing our thanks to Horst Lange-Bertalot for some suggestions in the identification. References: Jahn, R. & Kusber, W.-H. (eds): AlgaTerra Information System [online].
