Expressive Lighting Exercise Due April 21st Take the same scene you shot from the Oscar nominated 2016 script or choose a different scene (Straight Outta Compton, Spotlight, Ex Machina, Carol, or Brooklyn) and shoot it using an expressive lighting style. If you want to shoot from a different film, please find the original script for it, and clear it with me ahead of time. These are the expectations for shooting in this type of heightened style:

- aim to create a very clear mood through lighting, blocking, and camera work. Try to let the lighting tell some of the story through color, light, and shadow.

- limit your color palette to three hues (consider this in both production design and lighting). You can try https://color.adobe.com/create/color-wheel/ for some ideas.

- include one silhouette in the scene

- be able to justify any lighting through either objects / light sources in the scene

(e.g., “Network” and “Moneyball”) or through the emotional beats in the story (e.g., “Drive” and “The Conformist”)

Again, audio levels and acting are not as important as the emotional content of lighting, and what you can achieve through the blocking and camera work. Up to three people can turn in one project. Bring the videos to class on a hard drive, and also upload a version to vimeo.com
