Managing

Weather risk in agriculture

Express Weather is a unique social enterprise providing bespoke weather

solutions for the agricultural sector. Our vision is to facilitate the

transformation of agriculture into an efficient, productive, market oriented sector.

Since our inception 5 years ago, we have been at the forefront of innovation and

have successfully leverage technology to design long-term, transformative solutions

that tackle issues plaguing the agricultural domain.

Our solutions aim to minimise the volatility in crop yield and create forward

linkages to other sectors. Our ultimate goal is to deliver better financial outcomes

to the most vulnerable stakeholders at the bottom of the pyramid.

Weather is one of the

most critical but

extraneous factors of

agricultural production.

Weather risks are one of the

biggest drivers of volatility in

agricultural yield. While

extreme incidents like

droughts or floods are obvious

menaces, even nominal

fluctuations in basic

parameters, such as temperature and precipitation, can destabilise farm incomes,

food security and in turn, hamper the socio-economic development of a nation.

Weather risk andSustainable Agriculture

The most obvious impact of weather volatility is on crop yields. However, the

performance of livestock farms, the turnover of crop processors, the use of chemicals

and fertilisers and the demand for many food products also depend on weather.

Unless actively managed, weather risks have the potential to make the society

more vulnerable to economic shocks – both short and long term. Conventional

approaches to mitigate weather risk – including bailout, debt forgiveness and

emergency relief – usually concentrate on the consequence of the crises. However,

a proactive frontline initiative designed to disseminate accurate weather data

coupled with sector knowledge can empower all stakeholders to manage and

mitigate the risks and to build resilience.

We are focused on

Developing robust meteorological capability by implementing appropriate

infrastructure and data management practices to help manage and mitigate

weather related shocks in agriculture.

Directly empowering farmers to mitigate risks in production by offering ultra

high-resolution, sector specific, bespoke weather information and ancillary

value added services.

Leveraging meteorological expertise and technology to develop and

disseminate interactive, mobile based crop-specific, agro-meteorological

advisories that will allow stakeholders across the entire value chain to realise

better commercial results.

Creating atransformative eco-system

Real time observation

of weather requires a

network of integrated

systems able to measure

many weather parameters

simultaneously.

We have several years’

experience in

implementing and managing state of the art, robust, ground

observatory networks in different terrains.

While we customise our offering based on client requirements,

our observatories comprises of Automatic Weather Stations,

Agromet stations, and Telemetric Rain Gauges among others.

We support our infrastructure with implementation of

advanced data management practices, that includes a superior

data management backbone under HPC environment and a

three layer data back-up service. These allow farmers,

agronomists, and researchers to efficiently monitor most of the

conditions that affect crop phenology.

We have experience in running multiple Numerical Weather Prediction

(NWP) system to generate location specific weather forecasts for the

agricultural sector. Our team has deep expertise in running multiple models

like WRF, USL at various resolutions and nesting arrangements, as per client

requirements. Under HPC environment we analyse global, regional and local

data set with very high degree of accuracy.

Key features of our service include

Location specific, hour by hour current and weather forecasts for 7 days.

Ultra high resolution forecast over a smaller area

High degree of accuracy and superior data quality through creation of

customized environment at local level and improved data fusion

techniques

Customized data analysis and representation through multiple bespoke

channels (web, mobile applications

Real time, online validation assistance

Weather Forecasting Services

Our highly talented meteorologists are exposed to various state-of-art global

numerical models and have created customized environment at local-level to

deliver superior forecast quality to our end-users.

On the Input side, we consider primary and secondary data from multiple

observatories located on land, ocean and in space.

“FARMNEED saved my crop from cold wave conditions in December, January. I

was informed in advance about the expected dip in temperature which helped me

making necessary arrangements to save my crop”

Balmik Kalunge

Grape-grower, Maharashtra, India

“Express Weather service on weather and Agromet advisory is helping

horticulturist on cost cutting, plant protection and for quality management. Me

personally and my organization NABARD supports such innovative service.”

N. Shivkumar

Assistant General Manager, NABARD, India

“Weather linked decision support system helps grape growers on input cost

management and disease management. Express Weather provides accurate weather

forecast, that helps to run the DSS successfully.”

Director, NRC Grape, India

In line with our strategic intent to provide

meaningful weather data and custom-designed

value added services to the key stakeholders in

the agricultural sector, we have created an

innovative platform (Farmneed™) to effectively

manage and mitigate weather related risks during

the life-cycle of the crop.

Farmneed™ also helps in creating forward

linkages with the downstream stakeholders at no

additional cost.

Key features of our Farmneed™

platform include

Geo-tagging of farmers and their plots

allowing crop and location specific highly

accurate observed and forecasted weather

data, disease incidence prediction and alerts.

Bespoke agro-meteorological advisories at

plot level resolution.

Interactive nature of platform allowing

farmers to remotely connect with multiple

stakeholders including research institutes,

Input companies, Commodity traders etc. on

a near-real time basis.

Veritable repository of farm-level data

tracking crop-lifecycle stages, Input

applications, Disease infestations.
