As part of the plan to improve member outreach and manage the growing affairs of the Boone County Convention and
Visitors Bureau, the Chamber created a new position January 1st of this year and welcomed Tom Lockhart to our
chamber staff on March 21st. The Board of Directors, in going through the process of our Strategic Planning in late
2014, realized that the changing needs of today’s small business world will require more active participation from the
chamber staff with our members in a way that adds value to their membership. Tom brings a wealth of chamber and
tourism experience to our organization having worked with the Arizona Small Business Association, and two Chambers
of Commerce in the Scottsdale area. In his new capacity Tom will work diligently to keep the lines of communication
open with our members, assist with business development, membership growth, and the marketing, advertising and
promotions of the CVB. You’ll find him out and about as much as you will inside the offices. We have a lot of tools to
help our members stay in touch with us, and us with them. That said, nothing can replace a personal phone call or visit
to truly get us engaged in what your business or organization is doing. Look for myself and our new Manager of
Member Services/CVB, Tom Lockhart, to be “darkening your door” in the near future.

Chamber Programs
The year continues to roll along and while March has passed us by, it left us
with some great memories from our Chamber events. The 107th Annual
Meeting was a packed house as more than 110 members gathered at the
Fareway Conference Center to get the latest update on the Chamber and
hear from our keynote speaker, Dan Winters with WHO-TV. Even
Congressman Steve King made a surprise appearance that afternoon. Our
Spring Ag Omelet Breakfast once again did not disappoint with nearly 200
people served custom-made omelets. While all this was going on progress
continued on the remodeling of the Chamber offices at 903 Story Street. I
invite you to swing by to see what they have been able to accomplish, or at
the very least, check out some photos on page nine of this newsletter. Next
up: Our last Chamber Forum for the year on April 16th, two high school tours
later in April, and our Annual Golf Classic on June 2nd.

Ogden City Manager Donovan Olson will be
leaving his post as of April 1st after accepting a job
with Iowa State University Extension in the Mason City
area. Olson was active in Ogden Legacy, serving as
Secretary to the board, and was instrumental in
facilitating USDA funding that helped build the medical
clinic in downtown Ogden. He was also an active
participant in the Boone County Trails Initiative. The
city of Ogden is looking at several ways to fill the roles
of the manager’s position in the interim.

The following is a recap of Mayor Dirk Ringgenberg’s latest article Published in the
Madrid Register News
The city is hiring a new public works employee with primary duties as the Park Maintenance employee. This
will allow a more consistent care for Edgewood Park. Major projects for this summer will encompass several
high traffic roads to include the additional trail connection near the post office. The city is conducting a review
of all major ordinances. The process will likely evolve over the spring and summer with an attempt to work
closely with individuals in violation off specific ordinances. The city of Madrid has had ordinances in effect re-
garding junk, trash, high grass and sidewalk maintenance for many years, and all will all receive a serious look
as warmer weather arrives.
The Iowa Foundation for
Microenterprise and Community Vitality
organized the Iowa MicroLoan program
in 2008. This effort was modeled after a successful 6-county
program in Sioux City operating since 1992. Iowa
Microloan provides technical assistance and microloans of
$5,000 to $50,000 to entrepreneurs with solid business
plans who have had difficulty obtaining conventional
loans. Since 2009, Iowa Microloan has approved more than
95 microloans statewide. Loans are used for business
startups, expansions, refinancing projects and include
working capital, inventory purchase, equipment,
remodeling, relocation, and refinancing credit card
expenses—but not real estate purchases. A unique feature
is that Iowa MicroLoan provides business coaches who
make quarterly onsite visits to each business client. They
review financial progress and help to address any emerging
problems. Each entrepreneur client is eligible for an annual
grant of up to $250 for pre-approved technical assistance
expense reimbursement. Iowa Microloan does direct
lending with clients but also
focuses on collaborating with local
networks, groups and programs
who are interested in leveraging
funds and expertise to enhance
business success of small
entrepreneurs. For more

■ BUSINESS AFTER 5
One of the most active and visible committees of the Chamber are our “Red Coats”, the Chamber
Ambassadors. Each Tuesday throughout the year the Ambassadors make visits to our new and
existing members. It’s a great opportunity for them to get to know your business, and share that
knowledge with other members and the community . Along the way we snap a photo and publish
it on our social media sites, in our Chamber Express Newsletter, and in the Boone News Republican.
And, oh yeah, we’ve got a large pair of bright red scissors for your ribbon cuttings! Call Tom to set-
up a visit.

■ CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU
When I first started working at the arboretum, I did not know much about the
surrounding area but knew that would change quickly. I was invited to attend
the leadership program sponsored by the Chamber and met many highly
motivated people interested in learning more about Boone County. I learned
about the individual communities, the successful businesses and the many
opportunities for outdoor recreation. Completing the program gave me a new
understanding about the area and the role all of us play as ambassadors for our
county. Each one of us has the opportunity to promote our county. Every day
we have the chance to interact with people from our region, our state and
other areas of the country. As ambassadors, we can play a role in attracting new
people to visit, live and set up businesses in our county. Join me and you too
can be an ambassador. It is a wonderful job with many benefits.

CVB MEMBERS ARE INVITED TO THE
3RD ANNUAL SPRING BANQUET
The 3rd Annual Boone County Convention and Visitors Bureau Spring
banquet is scheduled for Tuesday night, April 12th at the Central Iowa
Expo’s Administration building. Ken Anderson of Andy’s BBQ will be
putting together a phenomenal meal for this event that gives those in
support of the tourism industry in Boone County and the surrounding area a chance to celebrate our
success from last year and look forward to the coming tourism season. The evening begins with a social hour
at 6pm, followed by the meal and a short program. CVB members will receive two complimentary tickets in
the mail, but we ask that you RSVP your intention to attend so that we can get an accurate head count for the
food preparation. Questions? Call Tom Lockhart at 432-3342 in our Chamber offices.

HEARD ON THE STREET: Chamber Board member and Hy-Vee store Director Dan Goshorn is heading north this month, taking on the same role with the Austin, MN store. Dan was very active with the Chamber and will be missed. We wish him the best. What’s with all the wood posts stacked out by the Expo? It appears that these may be used in the construction of the proposed pipeline project. Boone County will be the home base if/when the project begins.
SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE: The Chamber’s Annual Golf Classic is a great opportunity to highlight your business with a hole sponsorship. For $130 we’ll place signage (you can also use your own banner) for your company on a tee box, and note your sponsorship in our golfers welcome bag. Take it a step further and get creative with your own special promotion on your hole! Contact Tom or Kurt at the Chamber for more information. BY THE WAY….. The CHAMBER GOLF CLASSIC is scheduled for Thursday, June 6th at Cedar Pointe Golf Course. Registration will begin at 9am with a shotgun tee-off at 10am. The day includes a fantastic lunch, and lots of hole and door prizes. (see the flyer inserted in this newsletter) Your non-profit organization can make some serious money by working at the 2016 Farm Progress Show, coming August 30th, 31st, and September 1st at the Central Iowa Expo. Contact Tom Lockhart in our office for more details.

BAMA has been working very diligently for 2016’s call to action. The RACK CARDS from 2015 were very successful and a new
updated set has been printed and will be available at local businesses and local hotels. A campaign to shop Boone has also been
launched. The first phase was a full page ad in the Destination Magazine for tourists and the second
phase was to design a logo as seen here. The purpose of this logo is that local Boone residents will begin
to identify with shopping local in their community and understanding the importance of keeping our
money in Boone. Window clinks have been made and are available for your business. If you have not
received one, please contact the Chamber office and we will get one right to you. BAMA would love to
have other chamber members involved. If you are interested in being on the committee or in serving on
a project, please contact me at [email protected]. Our next promotion, PASSPORT to BOONE, will
run from April 30th to May 14th. The promotion is FREE to your business. Contact the chamber office as
there is limited space. Thank you for allowing me to chair your BAMA committee.
