Prindor at Finlay Printing,

Bloomfield, Connecticut.

In the printing industry, “Value-Added Printing” isa term that is nownot just something printers use

to fill a specific niche, but it’s a tool that they can use toget ahead and stay ahead. Making ideas come to life onthe printed page for creative-minded clients is now be-coming a necessary part of staying alive in the increas-ingly competitive business of print.

manroland’s mission was to find a creative foiling solu-tion that could do one-pass cold foil printing, was scala-ble, was able to retrofit to existing presses, and most ofall, met manroland’s highest quality standards. Theyfound it in the ROLAND InlineFoiler Prindor. Introducedas a prototype at Drupa 2004, InlineFoiler Prindor’s suc-cess was soon resonating throughout the world, and in2006 it received a GATF InterTech Award.

Automating the application of foil metallic effects toprinted products by incorporating the process into theprinting cycle, InlineFoiler Prindor provides printerswitha cost-effective way to add value to their products, whileeliminating the need for hot foil stamping and time andexpense associated with off-line techniques. The exclu-sive innovation can be installed on two printing units of

InlineFoiler PrindorInk over foil is nothing new at manroland. While the other companies are playing catch-up,manroland’s customers are already enjoying unmatched success in themarketplacewith thekind of technology which provides unlimited creative possibilities.

InlineFoiler Prindor offers the possibility of multiple reels of foil, of multiple widths on one press.

any new or recent vintage ROLAND 500 or 700 HiPrint.

Foil is applied true-to-register, and repeated overprint-ing of the foil produces incredible new effects which usedto takemuch longer to create. Not only that, but becausethis proces occurs inline, it can be combinedwith coatingand UV processes on different units.

Depending on the desired foiling effects, InlineFoilerPrindor can be equipped as a single-reel, or as a multi-reel (ROLAND 500 can accommodate up to three reels,ROLAND 700HiPrint, up to five) device. Withmulti-reel,foil widths can be flexibly adapted subject to the printedmaterials, so foil waste is always minimized. Upgradesfor QuickChange reels to further diminish makereadies, and manroland’s standard pre-press technological up-grades are also available.

The EUROMAN has been designed fordynamic markets with high growth

rates. The press’ versatility gives a printer theability to change the press capabilities towhatever product the customer desires, meet deadlines by utilizing the efficiencyand automation designed for high output, and in the end, improve both the quality ofthe printed work, and its owners’ bottomline.

The first of its kind. EUROMAN brings theversatility and flexibility of the 4X4 formatto commercial heatset printers who are try-ing to maximize their profitability and ex-pand their profit margins.

EUROMAN achieves those objectives by au-tomating virtually all its makeready func-tions - workflow, color, plate-change, andfolding options are all automated, and easilyadjusted to fit the product need.

EUROMAN replaces the traditional double-web 38" commercial web press with a moreefficient single-web, four-unit design. Withits 2:3:3 folder, EUROMAN can produce 16-page quarter-folded products, 32-page quar-ter-folded product, 16-page tabloid product,32-page digest products, as well as productswith lower page counts.

Fast and furious. EUROMAN can produce pe-riodicals in the collect mode at the rate of35,000 copies per hour. With its quarterfolder, it can run at the rate of 60,000 cph.And with its optional double quarter folder, speeds up to 70,000 cph can be attained.

Combine high production rates with EURO-MAN’s exceptional quality, and the result is apress that can improve the profitability ofany printer looking to expand its line ofproducts, and still meet deadlines with ease.

Flexibility CountsThe EUROMAN combines the best of all worlds. The efficiency of energy-saving drying techniques and auto-mated plate changing, high speed and high output, and amazing quality. But what makes this press special isthe fact that it can be what you decide you want it to be, even if you change your mind.

The EUROMAN Web Press

is the solution flexible

enough to hang on to

business in today’s com-

petitive commercial and

publications market.

Marketing, HGI Company Inc.

Practical application of automation. man-roland has developed high-quality Closed-Loop control systems for color and cut-offregister. HGI Company Inc., the first printerin North America with a EUROMAN, bankson this technology. “We emphasize our abil-ity to make rapid turn times through our au-tomated color and folder set ups incomparison to our competition. Color con-trol systems allow for less waste and time onpress in addition to going proof less. “ saidHGI’s Vice President of Sales & Marketing,Tom Sikora.

The EUROMAN has dryers with optionalthermal afterburner technology to achievean especially high level of energy efficiency, without having to sacrifice quality or power.EUROMAN’’s unique folding options allowthe operator to shut down the cross-foldcylinder when it’s not needed to save energyand prevent wear. This is smart design forcompanies that not only need flexibility andquality, but are also thinking about the fu-ture of the planet.

It’s all about the makereadies. At HGI Com-pany, EUROMAN’s automated features haveallowed them to add heatset web capabilitiesto their printing facility without having toincrease their labor costs.

Sikora remarked, “We feel that we have atremendous advantage in our makereadyspeeds and plate change capability, this al-lows for competitive pricing while maintain-ing good margins. The single web also givesus the ability to produce high quality withless labor. HGI Company is constantly goingfrom one format/trim size, (tabloid, stan-dard, digest) without effort because of thefolder automatic folder change and memorysettings most printers want to produce feweroptions.”■

Matching color and keeping it consis-tent during the print run is one of the

most demanding tasks for a printer. Visualjudgment of a picture is influenced by eachprinter's subjective color perception, and bydifferences in lighting and colors in the areawhere the printed sheet is inspected. Theseinfluences, along with the inherent varia-tions of the offset process, lead to differencesin the printed results.

Only measurement and regulating technol-ogy combined with standardization and con-trol methods can help the printer to evaluatethe print objectively and achieve results thatare reproducible.

manroland’s ROLAND ColorPilot measuringdevice is guided by motorized rail or by handover a print control strip and measures allthe solid ink and tone value patches of theprint control strip across the entire width ofthe sheet. After measuring is completed, thedensity deviations of all inking zones are dis-played on the screen.

Based on this successful system, manrolandhas now taken the next technological stepand introduced ROLAND InlineColorPilot forcolor control integrated in the press. Inline-ColorPilot measures ink density at full pro-duction speed without needing to pullsheets from the delivery. Density is meas-ured in the relevant patches of the print con-trol strips on the substrate using thestandards known from ColorPilot.

Using a series of up to seven high resolutionsensors, InlineColorPilot enables the com-plete print control strip to be measured afteronly three sheets, regardless of the numberof inks printed. Because no sheets need to bepulled to perform a color analysis, the con-venience and accuracy of InlineColorPilot is

Intelligent InkWith manroland’s ROLAND ColorPilot and ROLAND InlineColorPilot color measurement and calibration isdone with ease. Using advanced CCI (Computer Controlled Inking) technologies, reproducible quality isachieved, every single time.

manroland’s color measurement tools allow a printer to evaluate prints objectively, achieve accurate re-sults, and catch deviations in color early to reduce waste in the printing process.

virtually unsurpassed. Unlike similar com-petitive devices, InlineColorPilot does not re-quire movement, making it extremely lowmaintainance, and meets ISO requirementsfor measurement of wet ink conditions in-side a press.

Faster regulation of color and earlier detec-tion of changes in the press means less wastefor the printer, and quality assurance meth-ods integrated into the production processenable the print shop to verify its qualitystandards, for its own purposes, and for cus-tomers. ■

The Game Has ChangedIn a world where superior technology is everywhere, having one or two unique features is expected of a press. The ROLAND 700 DirectDrive stands apart with an abundant selection of unique features, and the ability tocombine them in ways which mirror the print industry’s requirement for flexibility, quality, and innovation.

The ROLAND 700 series of sheetfed offset presseshave always been a leader in the area of providing

a diverse selection of features.. Introduced to the marketas the press with “over 3000 possible combinations ofoptions,” the ROLAND 700 has developed over the pastseventeen years as the press to beat when it comes to per-formance and quality. Now, with the introduction to themarket of the ROLAND 700 DirectDrive, additional inno-vation and flexibility have been added to its long list ofqualities.

The ROLAND 700 DirectDrive is the first sheetfed pressin the world with electronically single-driven plate cylin-ders. This multi-tasking function allows the press to per-form three processes at the same time, including asimultaneous zero time plate change. Plates can bechanged using the DirectDrive’s APL system (AutomaticPlate Loading) during the ink run-up time on the press, ideal for shops that need to perform numerous shortjobs throughout the day with a minimum of makereadytime between runs.

The DirectDrive function of the Roland 700 DirectDriveis only the beginning of the story. From the console, thepress operator can also electronically change or correctprint length and start of print during production ifneeded, creating less waste, and reducing downtime tomake adjustments.

The ROLAND 700 DirectDrive also provides options formanroland‘s exclusive off-press makereadies with pprriinntt--net, manroland’s award-winning CIM (Computer Inte-grated Manufacturing) system. Add manroland’sworld-famous perfecting, coating, and sheet travel tech-nologies to the mix, our unbeatable designs for infeedand delivery, and of course, manroland‘s unmatchedprint quality, and this press gives new meaning to theword “Groundbreaking.”

No other sheetfed press on the market offers such arange of unique value-added features in one package. The ROLAND 700 DirectDrive is manroland’s answer forthe players who want to win at the challenging andchanging game of print. ■

The ROLAND 700 DirectDrive can re-

duce makereadies by up to sixty per-

cent through the interplay of several

different technologies. By combining

directly-driven plate cylinders (allow-

ing simultaneous plate-changes) and

fully-automated plate loading (APL),

the entire plate-changing process can

be performed in concert with other

processes.

“With the DirectDrive doing 10plates at one time, we wereachieving our makeready andrun waste goals after only threemonths with a 50 percent re-duction.”

John Glick, Vice President ofSales, Central Florida Press

Risks & RewardsA good Project Management team can be the difference between your printing dreamsbecoming a broken promise, or making them a reality.

What is the difference between a suc-cessful project, which delivers on its

promises and delivers the returns that weprojected in ROI considerations, and a proj-ect that fails to deliver those returns? The an-swer is: performance. But how can we assurethat the performance is there upon startupas predicted?

An important key in this scenario is success-ful project implementation, and the way toachieve it is through professional ProjectManagement. Machine manufacturing aswell as the printing industry haven’t alwaysbeen quick in adapting comprehensive proj-ect implementation practices. Suppliers weretempted to standardize not only the productbut also the customer situation. Today, eachproject has distinguishing conditions andcircumstances, and each customer’s expecta-tions are unique. This reflects on the waysuppliers interact with customers in order tosuccessfully implement projects.

Often times, investments in new press equip-ment are the largest single equipment in-

vestments a print operation will make. Inthat sense, even a relatively small formatpress can be a large scale project for theprinter, and must be implemented success-fully.

Large scale project management is basicallyrisk management. As business integrationbecomes more and more important, projectsbecome more complex in nature. Complex-ity can come from a large scale job, but alsofrom a high degree of technical complexityand workflow integration. With the growingtechnological complexities of today’s press-rooms, projects require a far greater level ofskill and attention to detail.

Another key to project success is perform-ance. Ultimately, what printers are buyingwhen investing in new equipment is per-formance. The benefit of professional ProjectManagement and successful project imple-mentation is most apparent in an efficientpress start-up. Efficient press start-ups min-imize dysfunctional cost, and as a result helpsecure the financial success of a project.

A traditional way to look at projects is like apuzzle to be solved. However, large scale andcomplex projects are far more than just big-ger puzzles with more pieces. Due to thegrowing level of workflow integration, a proj-ect can’t be looked at as an isolated entity. There are no edge-pieces of the puzzle thatcan guide us in the process of putting every-thing together. Rather than straight, clear cutlines, workflow integration presents us withmany interfacing challenges, and with a lotof grey area. Also, there is no picture on thebox that illustrates how everything has tolook at the end. Many deliverables of a proj-ect are functional, not hardware that you cantouch or feel.

Print production brings along many vari-ables that can influence the outcome of aproduction line. Uncertainty is a fact of com-plex production systems, and Project Man-agement allows printers to embraceuncertainty, and manage it. ■

Seamlessly integrated proven auto-

mated quality-enhancing functions

such as inline tension control, inline

register control and ink density con-

trol. Inline temperature control pro-

vides critical press stability,

regardless of the press speed or run

length. Inline cutoff control ensures

precise page alignment from the

press into finishing.

“manroland designers and engineers

excel at big-picture thinking. They

are adept at seeing relationships and

‘connecting the dots’ between multi-

ple technologies in order to create a

unified whole. Our autoprint closed-

loop systems exemplify this.”

Ron Sams, Vice President, Newspaper

Sales, manroland Inc.

The Future has Arrived. The next step for Web Printing is a “One Touch” solution.manroland is meeting that challenge with autoprint.

TThhee VViissiioonn: Printing on even the largest-scale web printing operations, at the

push of a button, with only one operator, atonly one control console.

TThhee rreeaalliittyy: At the press of a button, tasks areperformed that previously required countlessseparate actions: for makereadies, productionchangeover, printing and maintenance. Withmanroland’s autoprint Web presses, full au-tomation is within your reach, and no longerjust a dream for the future.

autoprint is the future manroland envisionsand it is virtually here now, says Ron Sams, manroland Inc.’s Vice President of NewspaperSales, “A number of European customers al-ready have autoprint technologies. For news-paper operations everywhere, autoprintadvances could not come at a better time.”

Modern operating concepts, substantially re-duce makeready processes, such as APL logis-tics, which is included with COLORMANautoprint presses at locations in Germany.APL logistics operates under the pprriinnttnetworkflow system. In either the control console

area or the CTP room, plates are scanned bythe PlateScan allocation control, then auto-matically transported via rails to the robotarm in their proper press location where “APL”immediately puts each in-place.

Also, the QuickStart software program opti-mally presets the press for each run, eliminat-ing the need for the operator to habituallyinteract with ink key settings. This brings thepress ‘on edition’ very fast, typically withinapproximately 200 copies. In addition to soft-ware, QuickStart includes on-site manrolandtraining to help print operations adopt newpractices and become more proficient at re-ducing waste.

Sams remarked, “manroland has demon-strated that autoprint delivers in the threemost critical areas for news operations today— enhanced print quality, waste reduction, and automation — from prepress to finish-ing. And it does so like no other press on themarket.”

Or to put it in other words: the vision of auto-mated printing is becoming a reality. ■

ROLAND 50A ROLAND 50 is larger than

meets the eye. manroland’s firstprinting press in 36/52 format, the ROLAND 50 is equipped withdouble-size printing cylinders andtransferters. The small formatpress even proves its true size

with its delivery. Even though it’s a small format press, the ROLAND50’s delivery is still over 27.5 inches deep.

The double-size printing cylinder (a principle derived from themedium and large formats) and the double-size transferter enablecontact-free sheet travel. This is especially important for thicker ma-terials. Smooth sheet travel also contributes significantly to mark-free sheet travel.

Basically, with the ROLAND 50, you are getting all of the advantagesof manroland’s medium and large format technologies in a smallerpackage. And when you include our integrated PressPilot technolo-gies, that’s really saying something.

ROLAND 200Totally redesigned from itspredecessor, the new unit-

ized ROLAND 200 is frequentlycalled upon for two- and four-color printing of high-quality cat-alog/sell sheets by commercialprinters and form printing by in-

house printing departments at universities and governmental enti-ties.

The press has been designed to meet the needs of the rapidly grow-ing number of printers entering the four-color market. It also is fre-quently selected as a supplementary press for larger pressequipment. Printers who want an easy-to-use four-color press thatoffers fast setup and easy runability without extensive operator in-volvement often look to the Roland 200 because it offers all of thesebenefits and much, much more.

ROLAND 900, 900XXLWith comparable mak-eready times, this highly

automated large-format pressproduces considerably more mul-tiple-up images than presses insmaller format classes.

The more options you have, themore orders you can obtain. With the ROLAND 900 you can specifyyour own product portfolio. Substrate versatility ranges from thethinnest paper to the thickest carton. Thanks to the relatively flatsheet travel path, even stiff substrates can be printed safely and inhigh quality.

QuickChange and Inline options are in abundance with the ROLAND900. QuickChange Coating, QuickChange Clamp, and QuickChangeSurface are all designed to save time in the pressrom, and Inline-Backprinter, InlineSheeter, and InlineSlitter all open up new worldsin money saving paper use and reduced waste.

But just because this big press is efficient doesn’t mean it skimpson quality. The combination of premium-quality drive gears andhydro-damping, plus a longitudinal shaft for presses with five ormore printing units prevent play in the gear teeth which ensuresoutstanding printing quality. The ROLAND 900 and 900 XXL carrymanroland’s name and our reputation for performance in the press-room.

What really stands out is its ability to bring in new creative work. With manroland’s Inline Foiler freedom of expression is unlimited. Creative minded clients can now realize what they visualize with spectacular images created with ink over foil. With the Inline Foiler you’ll challenge your clients’ imagination with virtually no color limitations to produce the highest possible resolution graphics with perfect registration at production speeds up to 16,000sheets per hour.
