Exposing the soda can liner
Exposing the soda can linerWe made a solution to expose the soda can liner.First we scratched off the paint with sand paper Then we filled the soda can up with tap water. Then placed the can in a 600 mL beaker and poured 6M sodium hydroxide to cover 3 quarters of the can. PurposeThe reason we did this experiment was to understand why the plastic liner was in the soda can. The solution essentially melted away the aluminum leaving us with plastic.
DataThe data we gathered during this experiment was that time was a huge factor considering on the paper it said it would take 10-15 minutes but it ended up taking 2 hours for the liner to be exposed. When we first placed the cans in the solution we noticed that the solution started eating away at the aluminum creating a fizz which started to take the paint off.
Before and after
ConclusionDuring this experiment we learned that the solution slowly ate away at the can. When we started this experiment we thought that it was going to eat away at the aluminum quickly especially since it was starting to fizz but instead it took 2 hours and the fizz didnt go away until the aluminum was completely gone. For another experiment we would want to create a solution that would be able to eat away at the aluminum and the liner.
