Back to forward.The story is the same in every city, there were guys who were good enough to be pro when you were still learning kickflips. They rode for the local shop, paid cost price and were stoked. The magazines didn’t care about them, filmers were few and far between and still they raged on because they loved it, needed it. As a kid you dreamed that one day you too would ride for that shop, roll with those guys, that’s all you wanted.

Fast forward a few years and things have changed quite a bit, your little brother gets free shoes, Billy just got a backpack sponsor and editing software gives birth to premature video magazines every year. opportunity is officially abundant, the right people are finally in the right places and what was only dreamed about five years ago is now possible.

The scene in Montreal has been a long time in the making. The skating here has always been for the love, the crew has always been a family and the winter always a bitch. Exposé dedicates it’s first issue to those who never got the chance to shine for the world, and especially to the skaters who are still here now, skating every chance they get, because regardless of the videos, magazines and sponsors the addiction just can’t be kicked… get your fix.

Par en avant, pas par en arrière… (ok ctune joke…)

Chaque ville renferme la même histoire. Celle des bonnes vieilles années, de l’époque ou certains vétérans aurait été assez bon pour être pro. Mais les magazines ne se souciaient pas d’eux, les caméramans, pratiquement inexistants. Ils payaient le cost price au shop local qui les commanditait, et c’était assez pour être heureux. Ils continuaient toujours, parce qu’ils aimaient profondément skater, parce qu’ils en avaient besoin. Toi, t’apprenais tes kickflips, rêvant qu’un jour, t’allais te tenir avec ces gars là, être comme eux et peut-être même, " rider " pour ce shop… C’est tout ce que à quoi tu aspirais.

Avançons maintenant de quelques années. Les choses ont beaucoup changé. Ton petit frère reçois des souliers gratuits, joblo viens de se trouver un commanditaire d’anti-sudorifique et les programmes d’édition vidéo donnent naissance à des vidéos magazines prématurés à chaque année. Les opportunités sont officiellement abondantes ! Avec les bonnes personnes aux bons endroits, il est maintenant possible de réaliser ce qui était à peine permis de rêver il y a cinq ans.

La scène montréalaise est en développement depuis longtemps. Chez nous, le skate est une histoire d’amour, le crew, une famille et l’hiver, toujours une plaie… Exposé se dédie à cette cause et à ceux qui sont toujours là, à ceux qui, peu importe les vidéos ou les magazines, sont devenu de véritables accro de ce sport qui est devenu un style de vie. À ceux-là, voici votre dose…

Voila une proposition qui semble particulièrement bien s’appliquer au cas de la névrose hivernale du skateboarder. C’est vrai, notre culture est issue directement de la Californie… Pourtant on en est bien loin… Pourquoi se mentir ? L’idée de skater les rues à l’année relève carrément du fantasme pour nous les Québécois. Tout notre imaginaire collectif est pourtant basé sur cette espérance, que les médias renforcissent en nous bombar dant d’illusions. Mirages dans un désert de glace, la désillusion annuelle est frustrante.

L’hiver est autant facile à constater que difficile à contourner. Devant l’état de fait, le skatepark est le premier recours. Ce fameux skatepark… celui qu’on a eu, que l’on a, qu’on aura… qu’on a pas ! Définitivement celui qu’on déteste pour telle ou telles raisons. ou en fait, plus parce qu’il est le bouc émissaire de toute la frustration et l’insatisfaction provenant de cette incontournable altération à notre fantasme.

La fuite reste toujours une solution de déviation. Décamper en Floride comme 25 000 Québécois chaque hiver… Encore faut-il en avoir les moyens et ce n’est sûrement pas la meilleure solution pour l’économie.

Et même si on arrive à y échapper, c’est habituellement de trop courte durée et au retour ce n’est que plus brutal. À moins d’espérer le salut du réchauffement de la planète par l’effet de serre, l’hiver est fort probablement là pour rester. Nous devons nous réadapter au lieu de tenter de l’ignorer. " L’hiver est redevenu un obstacle au travail et au progrès... " Nous avons repris le point de vue de Jacques Cartier et de ses compagnons qui avaient, eux aussi, d’excellentes raisons de craindre et de détester la saison froide. Aujourd’hui, de nouveau, nous rêvons d’un climat aussi tempéré que celui de l’Espagne et, chaque année, l’hiver nous déçoit. Lisez " Abolissons l’hiver" de Bernard Arcand, c’est une petite plaquette de 110 pages paru aux éditions boréal, qui ouvre l’esprit sur une belle perspective par rapport à l’hiver québécois. Des change-ments sont à apporter à nos habitudes de vie. Il faut revoir notre conception de l’hiver; l’assumer surtout. Ne pas se faire croire que c’est le dernier à chaque printemps, quand les trottoirs sont secs et que le curb de berri est pelleté…

Maudit’hiver ! Sadique saison... Cinq mois sinistrés chez soi… rien à faire… outres quelques sessions de park ou de mini rampe, condamné à la contemplation passive de mémoires et d’anticipations d’un printemps ou d’un été lointain… La névrose collective que doivent se claquer les skaters québécois chaque hiver n’a rien d’une partie de plaisir. Elle atteint l’ensemble de sa population à différents degrés et est implacablement récurrente et perverse de par sa nature saisonnière. Dans un épisode psychotique des plus classique, le skateboarder répète, sans savoir trop pourquoi, des phrases du type: " L’hiver prochain je

vais en Cali., c’est sûre !", " C’est pas juste ! C’est pour ça qu’ici on a pas de pros…", " J’haïe les skateparks ! Moi c’est du street que je veux rider !" Les témoignages abondent, l’hiver au Québec est incontestablement dur et long. Mais, comme le proposait l’anthropologue Bernard Arcand, il y a quelques années, dans un livre intitulé " Abolissons l’hiver " : ce qui nous mettrait vraiment à bout, ne serait-il pas le fait que nous tentions d’ignorer l’hiver ? MONTréAL-DEsErONTO…HEEUU, j’VEUx DirE TOrONTOQue dire sur un p’tit trip de skate dans une ville réputée pour sa platitude... ? J’veux dire, c’est vrai. Toronto est connu pour ses bars qui ferment tôt, avant même que les nôtres ouvrent dans certains cas! Ses fameux " beer stores ", introuvables, dont les heures d’ouverture sont à envier celles d’une banque. C’est interdit de fumer à peu près partout… non mais ! Je sais que, dans la vie, y’a pas que les hammers, le pussy et la bière… mais quand même… Je m’permet une parenthèse…

( )Il faut comprendre que, la ville de York, rebaptisé Toronto en 1834, de l’huron, " point de rencontre ", fut fondée par les anglais loyaliste (les loyaux de sa Majesté la Reine) qui fuyaient la révolution américaine. York, particulièrement british de caractère, fonctionnait en tant que capitale du Haut Canada Anglais de l’époque et devint un centre commercial de prédilection.

Le Toronto du 19e et du début du 20e siècle était très respectable, mais à la fois, des plus conformiste et prude. Les lois étaient faites à Toronto, et très rarement elles y étaient brisées. Reposant sur une solide fondation protestante, Toronto a toujours eu cette réputation de ville conservatrice et ennuyeuse…

Cinq ans avant la prohibition aux Etats-unis et même avant que la prohibition ne gagne la faveur du public en général, l’ontario interdit la vente de boissons alcooliques sauf pour certains vins de fabrication artisanale ou aux propriétés médicinales... La législation toucha 44 des 112 brasseries dénombrées au Canada à l’époque.

Finalement, en 1927, l’ontario révoque la loi sur la prohibition et crée la régie des alcools. La vente de boissons alcooliques se retrouve alors sous la juridiction du gouvernement, sous l’effet d’une loi, " The Liquor Control Act ". La bière sera désormais vendue dans des établissements régis par le gouvernement… Et s’en était fait… on connaît le résultat…

ok un peu long comme parenthèse. Mais bon, la prochaine fois que vous serez downtown T.o. en train de chercher désespérément le Beer Store… au moins vous connaîtrez le fond de la chose…

If anyone has shaped and regulated the progression of skateboarding in MTL, it’s Eric Mercier. Simulta neously acting as a pillar and the foundation, he reminds us all of what is possible through determination, passion and raw talent. I, as with many others can personally attest to the fact that being around Eric makes you skate harder, his contagious intensity leaving you no choice.

Eric deserves every ounce of respect and prosperity skating can give him, because as sure as the snow in January, he will be there, in the immortal words of long time friend Phil Beauséjour kickin’yo ass !

periodes, comment est ce que cela a influencé ton style de skat-

ing ?Ça m’as aider a être un overall skater

(street, mini-ramp, vert). J’ai commencer a skater pis les kickflips existais pas encore, le street skating c’était seulement de cruiser dans les rues ou de faire du jump ramp. Y’a eu la transition entre les boards poisson et les boards d’aujourd’hui qui a été assez drastique et qui m’as donner assez de misère à m’habituer puis après c’était au tour des micro roues (30mm) et maintenant c’est le switch skating. I’ve seen it all so far !Eric, you’ve seen skating evolve through a few different periods, how as that shaped your skating ? It helped me become an overall skater (street, mini-ramp and vert). When I started kickflips didn’t exist yet, street skating consisted of cruising or hitting a jump ramp. The transition from fishtail boards to the modern shape was a drastic one and took me a while to adapt, then came thirty millimeter wheels and switchstance skating. I’ve seen it all!

À t’es début, qu’elles étaient tes influences ? Pour ce qui est de la scène locale, je dirais que Guy

Poirier a été une bonne source d’inspiration quand j’ai déménagé à Laval à la fin des années 80. Il avait du gros power dans son skating (f/s 360 melon par dessus une table a picnic en jump ramp) du jamais vu a l’époque. C’est a ce moment que j’ai commencé a vraiment m’interroger sur mon skating et sur ce que j’allais faire avec. Thanks Guy. Et pour les autres je dirait Tommy Guerrero et Natas. Who inspired your skating in the early days? In terms of the local scene, Guy Poirier inspired me a lot when I moved to Laval in the late eighties. I saw him launching f/s 360 melons over a picnic table, which was unheard of at the time, he definitely had a lot of raw power. It was after watch-ing him that I started asking myself where I wanted to take my skating, thanks Guy. Tommy Guerrero and Natas also had a big influence on me.

Au cours des années, il y a eu plusieurs excellents skaters à Montréal, pourquoi crois tu qu’il y en a si peu qui tire profit de leur talent aujourd’hui ?

Je ne veux pas porter de jugement sur qui que ce soit, parce que je ne sais pas ce qu’il ce passe dans la tête de ces personnes là, mais je pense que certaines personnes ne se prennent pas assez au sérieux, soit qu’ils ont peur de voyager ou ils pensent que tout va

leurs tomber dans les bras du jour au lendemain. C’est pour cela que la scène à Montréal n’est pas aussi solide qu’elle devrait l’être... Trop de talent perdu. (Vancouver est un bon example de scène solide). Tu dois commencer au bas de l’échelle pour réussir dans la vie. Montreal as produced some amazing skaters over the years, why do you think not many of them are around to finally capitalize on the industry boom? I don’t want to judge anybody or their decisions because I don’t know what’s going on in their heads. I just think certain skaters don’t take themselves seriously enough or are affraid to travel around, some think that everything is gonna fall in their lap overnight. That’s why MTL’s not as solid as it should be… too much wasted talent, Vancouver is a good example of a solid scene. You have to start at the bottom of the ladder to make it to the top.

E.A.S.T skate shop a été bref, mais merveilleux. Qu’as tu appris de cette experience ?

Premièrement, j’ai appris que la business c’est com-plètement un monde à part, tu ne peux pas toujours faire ce que tu penses qu’il serais bon de faire. Tu dois te plier à certaines réstrictions ou contraintes. Mais tout est possible si tu le veux vraiment. Il faut seulement si prendre de la bonne manière. Deuxièmement il y a la jalousie des autres business avec laquelle tu dois dealer… Il y a toujours quelqu’un qui va essayer de t’écraser parce que tu as du succès. Et il y en a d’autres qui vont t’aider a réussir. Mais ça, comme on dit, " it’s part of the game ". J’ai bien aimé mon expérience, c’est juste désolant que se soit déjà fini.E.A.S.T skate shop was brief but beautiful, what did you learn about running a business? Firstly, I learnt that busi-ness is a whole other world, you can’t always do what you think is right, there are more rules and regulations to abide by. But everything is possible if you really want it; you just have to do it right. Secondly, you have to deal with jealously from other business’s that will try and squash you if you experience any success as well as the people that will help you. It’s all part of the game. It was a good experience, I’m just sad it ended so soon.

Que penses tu de l’industrie Québecoise ?L’industrie au Québec est un peu pauvre, il devrait y

avoir plus de personnes qui se concentrent à produire, promouvoir et supporter la scène et les compagnies locale pour qu’elles puissent faire des profits au lieu d’être toujours sur un mode de survie, qu’ils puissent prendre de l’expansions à l’extérieur du Québec et non toujours mettre de l’argents dans les poches des améri-cains (ils en ont déjà assez). Il y en a qui le font déjà, mais pas assez.What are your views on the industry here in Quebec ? The industry in Quebec is just too poor, not enough people produce, promote and support the local scene and industry so they can actually make profits and expand outside of QC instead of being stuck in a continual survival state. Some people are starting, but not enough.

Pourquoi tu n’habites pas en Californie ?Parce que j’ai des responsabilités paternel.

Je ne pouvais pas me permettre de partir pendant X nombres d’années et manqué à l’évolution et l’éducation de Christopher. Et il y a aussi le problème de droit d’entrée au uSA pour des causes que je ne dévoilerai pas au grand public, mais tout est rentré dans l’ordre maintenant et je vais aller faire des tours par ci par là.How come you never moved permanantly to Cali? Mainly because of my responsibilities as a father. I couldn’t just take off for X amount of years and miss Christopher’s education and evo-lution. There’s also the problem of me not being able to enter the United States for reasons I won’t tell everyone out there, but finally all my papers are in order and I’ll be able to go anywhere I want.

Tu as récement quitter un commanditaire de longue date, Premium skateboards, que nous reserves Eric Mercier pour le futur ?

Continuer a skater fort et représenter mes sponsors qui m’appui et me respecte comme j’ai toujours fait et je verrai bien ou tout ça va me mener. Je négocie avec d’autres personnes mais il ni a rien d’officiel pour l’instant.You’ve parted ways with long time sponsor Premium Wood, whats next for you? Continue to skate hard and represent my sponsors that have supported and respected me just like I always have and see where it takes me. I’ve talked to few companies but nothing is official.

Pourquoi Montréal n’as pas de skatepark, selon toi?

Peut-être parce que la ville est trop occupée à mettre de l’argent dans le toit du stade olympique ou parce qu’il y a trop de projets sur la table (Vez, Taz, Neil, KC projects, etc…)

J’ai aucune idée ! Il faudrait poser la question a Vez.How come montreal can’t get a skatepark? Maybe because the city is too busy paying for repairs on the Olympic stadium roof or maybe there are too many skatepark projects on the table, I have no idea! We should ask Vez that question, he knows more about the situation.

Parle nous du skateparc de Boucherville, les sessions privées à l’époque où Bob Penny étais le gérant.

Il y a tellement à dire que je ne sais pas par où commencer. Et de plus je ne sais pas si je peux raconter ce qui se passait vraiment dans les private sessions. Ce qui se passait a Bouch reste a Bouch. Mais je peux dire une chose : Fun+Fun = SuperFun. Thanks Denis.Tell us about the old Boucherville skatepark days, the after sessions when Bob Penny worked there. There’s so much to say I don’t know where to start. Plus I don’t think I can talk about every-thing that went down during the private sessions! What went down at Bouch stays at Bouch, all I know is that fun plus fun equals super fun. Thanks Denis.

Crois tu que Montréal devrais étre considérée comme une ville de skateboard à part entière par rapport aux spots, aux skaters et à l’industrie en générale ?

Sans aucun doute Montréal est une ville de skate en terme de spots et skaters. Pour ce qui est de l’industrie, je me suis déjà pro-noncer sur ce sujet.Do you think Montreal should be considered an official skateboarding city, in terms of the industry, the skaters and the spots? MTL is without a doubt a skate city in terms of skaters and spots. As for the industry I’ve said what I

think.

Qui sont les skaters à surveiller en ce moment à MTL?

Je dirais toi (Jai Ball), Gab Ekoe, Marc-André Daoust (MAD), Pinion (PIF), Sam Houde, Antoine Asselin, Scott Furkay, Bernard Maillot, Jason McDonald, et il y a une couple d’autre rookies dont je ne connais pas le nom. Ho oui ! j’allais oublier little Willy, il est en feu et a seulement 9 ans, tassez-vous parce qu’il déplace de l’air.Who is on the rise in the local scene? I’d say you (Jai Ball),Gab Ekoe, MAD, Pinion (PIF), Sam Houde, Antoine Asselin, Scott Furkay, Bernard Maillot, Jason McDonaldand and a few other rookies whose names I don’t know. Oh! I almost forgot little Willy, the kid’s on fire at nine years old, you’d better watch out.

Tu es un habitué de la série de compétition en Europe, mais pour un kid qui rêve d’aller là-bas, à quoi doit-il s’attendre?

C’est comme une grosse réunion de skater et de l’industrie qui dure un mois et qui ce passe dans plusieurs pays d’europe. C’est comme nul part ailleurs, les trains, les coffee shops etc… les courses sont immenses et les skaters donne le meilleur d’eux même. Alors soyer prêt à voir du gros calibre.You’re a regular on the European contest cir-cuit, for the kids out there who dream of going, what is it really like? It’s a big month long indus-try and skater reunion that travels across several countries. It’s like nowhere else; the trains, coffee shops etc… The street courses are gigantic and the skaters give it there all. I you go, get ready to see the best skaters in the world.

Quels sont tes plan pour la prochaine saison ?Faire la tournée des contests du circuit World Cup et peut être faire les X Games

si tout va bien. Voyager tout en filmant pour les videos et faire des photos le plus possible pour avoir de bon chèques d’incentives. What are your plans for this summer? Do the World Cup contest circuit and maybe the X-Games if everything goes well. Travel, film and shoot photos… gotta get those incentive checks.

Où te vois tu dans 5 ans ?Toujours dans l’industrie du skate ça s’est officiel. où ? C’est difficile à dire,

je ne suis pas le genre de personne à prévoir ce que je ferai dans un an d’ici, il arrive tellement de choses en un an. Je vais toujours skater jusqu’à ce que je ne puisse plus marcher.Where do you wanna be in five years? Always in the industry, that’s for sure. Where? That’s hard to say, I’m not the type of person to think of where I’m gonna be a year from now, so much can happen, I do know, I’m gonna be skating until I can’t walk.

Où trouves tu la motivation pour continuer à skater? La liberté d’expression, l’intéraction entre les skateurs, le mode de vie que plus-

ieurs personnes rêverais d’avoir, la différence des spots, un terrain de baseball va toujours être un terrain de baseball dans n’importe quelle ville du monde, en skate c’est jamais pareille. Et par dessus tout, la satisfaction de réussir un truc que ça fait longtemps que tu pratiques.What keeps you wanting to skate? The freedom of expression, the interaction between skaters, the lifestyle that most people dream of having, the different spots, a baseball field is a baseball field anywhere in the world, with skating it’s never the same. Most of all it’s the satisfaction of landing a trick you’ve been practicing a long time.

Comment aimerais tu que les skaters se souviennes de toi à la fin de ta carrière?Comme un embassadeur ou un pionnier de la scène à Montréal. Même si je ne

suis pas le premier qui a amené le skate ici, je pense que je fait parti de ceux qui ont contribués à l’évolution du skate au Québec et au Canada, de même que plusieurs autres.How do you want to be remembered when the skating slows down, on and off your board? As a pioneer and ambassador for the skate scene in Montreal. I’m not the first guy to skate in MTL but I feel I’m part of the people who made a contribution to the evolution of skating in Quebec and Canada.

C’est à peu près temps ! Ça fait combien de mois qu’on attend d’être délivré de notre sentence d’emprisonnement ? Ce qui suit est une libération météorologiquement conditionnelle. Ce qui est drôle, c’est quand le calendrier nous dit que c’est le printemps ! Je ne pense pas ! Le printemps pour nous, c’est quand il n’y a plus de neige. Il y aura toujours d’autres tombées de neige qui mettront de côté les espoirs sur-exciter des possédés du skateboard. Ça va prendre une couples de semaines de plus…

ENFIN… LE PRINTEMPS.

une fois cette étape franchis, on peut maintenant rouler et respirer de l’air quasi-pure après avoir fait érupter la poussière de masonite de nos poumons affamés. Beaucoup de spots se font déneiger par les impatients. Les impatients ne peuvent simplement pas attendre que le soleil et la température élevée nous débarasse de la neige et des mini-rivières qu’elle cause. Le pire c’est que la ville utilise de petites roches (de la garnotte ) au lieu du sel pour dealer avec la neige facque c’est pas mal gossant de rouler la dedans… Mais une fois que les balayeuses zamboniques ont fait le grand ménage, la lumière est verte! N’oubliez pas que ce n’est pas un adieu mais un au revoir alors, profitez-en !

Notre société en générale semble avoir un boost de vie. C’est vraiment rafraichissant de voir le monde reprendre le beat. Juste rouler sur du béton est grandement apprécié.

Les ledges et les curbs se font cirer d’une ambition accentuée, les marques font preuves que les roues ont commencée à crier. Ce bruit se transformera bientôt en la symphonie orchestrale de Montréal ! Tous les coins de rues seront achalandés par des skateboards… une véritable invasion. Beaucoup de piscines seront vidées, nettoyées, peinturées et remplient, il s’agit de les skater au bon moment.

Le soleil devient de plus en plus chaud, les journées semblent tellement plus longues, les démos et les com-pétitions reprennent, il y en a pour les fous et les fins. Suer dehors en plein air est un feeling incroyable. une bonne bière dans la chaleur, les terrasses, les bières, les côtes à westmount, les rues de la ville...

Lets start off with skate shops happenings, trades and distro hook-ups, over at underworld Gianmarco got fully laced with Vans, Hurley, Fury trucks, Hollywood Skateboards and Pig wheels courtesy of ultimate, L.P. Brunelle is on Circa through Fourstar dist’ as well as Momentum and Tensor with ultimate and... Shortys through Shortys, keep up the good work L.P., J.P. Brodeur and Oliviero Fontana both get wheels for free now thanks to Autobahn and Satori, J.P. can also set up his Autobahns on a Firm board thanks to ultimate, Islander Berny Mailhot is now rolling on Stealth urethane. Look for Berny and the rest of the underworld team on the under Attack tour this summer, veggie dogs for all! Speaking of dogs, E.T. left for China last month to do a series of demos, unfortu-natly the timing couldn’t be worse, with t h e outbrake of Sars, but don’t worry his lungs can take a beating, come back soon bro.

In other shop news, Empire is now opening downtown, the new team is Eric Mercier, PIF, Jai Ball, Gab Ekoe, little Willy Christofaro and the elusive Stefan Lalonde, look for the Empire promo video this summer. Dr Lalonde is also representing Link Footwear.

over at Spin Board shop, Vez and the boys celebrated their 4th anni-versary at St Laurent’s Jupitor room with special guest; QC rap star D-Natural, D-Natural is definitely back! Spin is also responsible for two upcoming demos in the month of May; Birdhouse on the 14th and Hollywood on the 17th, call 288-SPIN for more info.on the con-test tip, KC Projects new season starts in ottawa on May 18th, continuing through to Beaupré on june 7th, Montreal and Sherbrook in July, Moncton on August 17th and the finals will take place in october back in MTL. NorthNorth aurait du s’appeler Beaver... La suite logique de l’intro et des sketchs 16mm à la "Mouse", qui sont particulièrement bien réussis, l’aurait voulu ainsi… Mais beaver, en anglais, ça peut sonner mal… Blague à part… North est vraiment un excellent film. Il se démarque autant au niveau de la qualité que du skating. Ce film s’impose définitivement comme numéro un au chapitre des productions cana-diennes.

Ted Degros, Wade Fyfe, Russ Miligan, Mike Mcdermmot et Aaron Johnson sont de la prochaine génération de pros canadiens. Ils sont tous sérieusement bon. Ils ont du contrôle et des styles remarquables. Rafraîchissant de voir qu’il n’y a pas que des bowls et des skateparks dans l’ouest… Keegan Sauder lui, par contre, les assassines sau-vagement, entre deux acid drop d’un double set… bien sur!?

Dans l’ensemble, la musique se prête bien à la forme et à l’image. Malheureusement, elle n’est pas particulièrement accrocheuse. En faits, j’aurais préféré que la " tune " du part à Russ Miligan me reste en tête et essayer de la downloader sur "Kazaa", plutôt que de ne pas pouvoir enlever de mon esprit quand un quatrième beat synchro au landing viens assassiner un varial-heel flip superbe de Mike Chalmers… C’est simplement dommage à mon sens étant donné l’ampleur de tout le reste. C’est aussi très personnel, j’en conviens…

Castor, huard et police montée confondus, North est probablement le meilleur film Canadien à ce jour. La qualité de l’image, les tricks et le montage s’impose comme nouveau standard de qualité. on sait que nos voisins de l’ouest sont sérieux et plein d’ambitions. Dans North, on voit qu’ils ont aussi tout le talent nécessaire pour arriver à leurs fins… mais où sont les grenouilles ?

Skull OffTEMPLE SKATE SuPPLY VIDEo

The Temple crew, consisting of Shayaa, Johnny, Holden, Alexis, Charles, Tyler, Ian and boss/filmer Andy Pearce worked hard to bring a refreshing look at some of MTL’s youngest up and comer’s. Skull Off is fun to watch, with a great hip-hop fueled soundtrack and simplistic editing approach. Filled with smooth runs and great styles Skull Off is reminiscent of one of my all time favs’ World Industries Love Child and is sure to make kids wanna skate. Drop by Temple and pick one up, Lucas’s double inward heel alone is worth the price.

It was a classic, even if you never listened to the likes of Tommy Lee, or Nikki Sixx, that song left an impression in the heads of stupendous people everywhere. Before I begin, I would like to state for the record that I am an ordinary guy who has no credentials as a doctor of both Eastern or Western medicine, what soever. I can't proscribe anything or tell you to go out and by this shit. I’ m speaking from pure experience. With this said, I will begin my tale.

Like all good stories mine begins in a bar. I was drinking a fair amount with my buddies. By ten p.m. conversation dwindled and my attention faded to the television, where I watched an old long-haired chinese man was doing a kung-fu routine. He was holding a sword and shield swinging his arms and rolling around on olympic mats. I sat their fully entertained. I felt, in my lion heart that I wanted to do kung-fu too. I wanted to fight like a mean kung-fu warrior. I thought it would be nice. It would be pleasant for me to fight people of bad nature. Yes, I thought that would be special. So I made up my mind. I was to do kung-fu. I then quickly finished the two pitchers sitting in front of me. It should be made clear, however, that I visited the men's washroom before I left the bar. I grabbed a cab home and went to sleep. I awoke the next morning without a hang-over. Then I went about my business for a couple of years.

When I reached the age of twenty-one, I found out about a secret under-ground kung-fu school through word of anus. The school was hidden, located down a small corridor in a small building next to a small quiet ally and attached to another building which faced other buildings which were small too. I visited the place shortly after I heard about it. In all honesty, I was very impressed by the school's decor and facilities. The place was decorated like a kung-fu school from the 1940's (and please my friends don't ask me how I know this, please my friends, please). Most of the furniture were antiques and there was chinese calligraphy on the walls. The most interesting things were the two weapon racks and the ten foot tall alters dedicated to kung-fu masters. When I got there I saw an old chinese man serving incense to the alter of General Kwon. He turned to me and introduced himself as Who Flung-Poo. He offered me some tea and a one inch by one inch picture of his shaved genitalia. I politely declined. He then commenced to look at me funny. I got scared so I accepted his generous offer. I registered in his school the same day.

Let me just say that this school was fucked up in many different ways. It was full of angry brutish fuckers who were afraid that one day they would get fucked up their asses by surprise. A few of them were o.K. Grand-master Who ran his school like boot camp. He demanded the highest respect from his students. This short cantonese man, however, was truly fantastic at kung-fu, and according to the credentials on the wall, he was a qualified chinese doctor of herbology and acupuncture. Enough about him.

Every student had to do specific exercises that required the smashing of the forearm bone. I am not going to go into the technicalities of this exercise, nor am I going to pretend that I know more about it than I actu-ally do. All that I will say is that every time we finished the brutal exer-cises our class would spend ten minutes rubbing Master Who's bone medicine on our fat bruises. I was explained by the instructors that Iron Hit Wine reinforced the microscopic dents in our bone with calcium deposits, thus making our forearm bones denser. And no shit this stuff was so potent that my bruises were gone in two days. Soon I learnt that master Who was not the only bone doctor in town. In fact, bone doctors could be found in most chinatown’s across North America. Bone medi-cine is a serious chinese medical practice. Many bone doctors are spe-cialists in bone repair and they usually have their own recipe for Iron Hit Wine.

A good friend of mine used this shit after he fractured a bone in his hand (I never said I was a doctor) from alleged skateboarding. He took his cast off ten days too early. He called me that day. His eyes were full of tears and his heart was sick. He sighed bitterly. I said " My friend, why do you sigh so bitterly ". And he opened his mouth and said " I am weak, my arms have lost their strength, the cry of sorrow sticks in my throat, I am oppressed by idleness ”. It was then that I turned my thoughts to my bottle of bone medicine.The day after he applied it to his wound. And his injury was healed within a week.

The moral of the story is to read the lables on wine bottles before you start drinking, foo ! What do you say huh ? How’s that for a conclu-sion.

Girls! on April 10th, the first sunny day I was outside in just a T-shirt, and also the evening of our video's Premiere at Cafe Mars-Venus,coming sraight at ya from downtown Montreal. It was a charged Night, and I promised myself it would be no less than a drunken celebration of a job incred-ibly well done, as the energies that brought this undertaking together needed some aknowledgments. Friends of all ages filled the place, and it was a fresh spring awakening to the non-jaded forms of skate-boarding out there. Much thanks to everyone involved in any way, and another clink of bottles cheersing to all the people who came out to support it. Girls! Girls! Girls!

Welcome Home", comment tu te sens par rapport à ça?C'est sur que j'ai été vraiment content! J'pense que ça été un très bon "move" pour moi d'aller rider pour E.A.S.T., même si ça n'existe plus... What made you wanna get into skating ? Well, I kind of had 2 phases, the first started way back when I was like 7 years old, my older brother Kacey used to skate and my family and I went to florida and my dad took me to a skate shop there and bought me a dog town team board with purple indys and slime ball wheels. I was so stoked. We were pretty tight my brothers and I. Me, Rory and Kacey used to tear shit up around our hood. I didn’t really get started until I was like 12. My elementary school buddy Beau skated and I just got back into it and skated ever since then. Who were some early influences ? I always looked up to the Montreal locals growing up. Guys like Dan Vez, Mercier and especially the whole city hall crew, that was my biggest influence. Dudes like Jens, you (Jai Ball) and just the whole vibe of the city hall sessions that went down those days are unforgetta-ble. How do you feel about the skate scene in MTL ? I like the scene here, everybody is pretty close and the city is really nice to skate. We all push each other. You live in a predomi-nantly English neighborhood, what is your take on the French-English relationship in Montreal, as well as how it affects the skate scene. Tell the kids out there about life in the basement with your two brothers. The sweet life...[ha ha]. Its just me and Kacey now, Rory moved to Calgary for a bit but Kacey and I are holding it down. You still play some hockey during the winter, what are your stats ? Yeah I grew up playing hockey and decided to lace up the skates for one last winter. It was fun. Ha ha ! What does skating give you that you can’t get anywhere else ? Skating gives me freedom and endless creation. I love it. The industry in MTL is growing, kids are getting hooked up allot faster than before, is the whole distributor sponsorship deal opening doors ? It appears to be. I mean the dis-tributors are helping a lot of peeps. At least they get a chance to get out to wherever they want to go. I’m stoked. Would you ever pack it all up for a year and head out to Vancouver or Cali ? For sure, I'd love to go and check the whole scene out, i’m gonna try to get the travel ball rolling. What are your plans for this summer? Film for All Night Long, then I’m gonna go on a european adventure with my girl Zoe. Gonna check out some hot spots and skate, Jesse Bowden at WE and the Drop guys are hook-ing me up with some distributors to meet up with. If you could have one dream come true, what would it be? Any one of those dreams that you really think are true for that split instant when you wake up and you believe !

Is this the “Dub Corner”? Yes, this is kind of a Dub Corner. There are a couple Dub Corners. There is all kinds of Dub Corners. A Dub Lounge is a corner. Dub Corners is where people are

involved in Dub are doing their little thing. Their area. Their little niche. Dub music is basically a niche market. Small little community kind of scene.

When did you start Dispensation records? It started around 2000, the first release "Moss man VS the World Bank" came out in 2001.

You 've done some work with Mr. Tsunami. Want to tell us a little bit about him? The mysterious Mr. Tsunami. That's Bob. The guy from Shine Like Stars. The guitar player in The Ark of Infinity Band. Bob Eaglesham and he's Mr. Tsunami. one of his aliases. He's a multi instru-men talist very talented kind of like a muscal genius, a great guy. That's the guy I basically started the Arch with. Him and this guy John Asencio. From there it just spread out. Jon Asencio, ah,he doesn't like to be known as this but he is the old bass player from the Dough

Boys.

Your working on your third release now? The third release I guess will be ah, the Ark Dub record then after a record with J.Robot. Also doing a lot of remixes, working on a song for my dad's experimental animation. Also doing a record with Vander. A french reggae, pop, dub type thing. So ya got a lot on my plate.

Your a jack or all trades. Kind of like a musical Mc Gyver? That's it. You said it there. I gota be. It's the indus-try and it's also the creative aspect. So I guess forward amongst the sharks, you have to be fairly adaptable. Well equipped I guess.[laugh] Yep.

How long has the Dub Lounge been around in Montreal for now? Seven years now. It started in 1997. Fall 97.

You 've gone to Europe? Yeah! Been over there, did a couple gigs. Went to some conferences and checked out the scene and it was really cool. Did some networking and it was pretty awesome. A lot of fun. I can't wait to get back. I just got a remix contract from there. Dub is huge there. That's where it's the biggest. It's in Europe. The main market.

So, you used to skate eh Moss? Yep. That was a big inspiration to. For sure. Inspiration growing up skating.

What was your last board?

Last board ? [long pause] oh shit, the last one I got from Raj. The last board. It was a Colin McKay. Han Solo with the gun.

Was that a Plan B ? Yeah I think it was or something like that. It was like a slick board. I'm pretty sure that was the last one I think. or was it the twin tale. The Vision twin tale.[laugh] Remember that thing?

Yeah! [laughs] I had that thing for awhile.

It was a monster! Fuckin boat. That thing was a boat. I remember going to Sk8 Park with that. Remember Sk8 Park.

Sk8 Dept. or Sk8 Dept. What ever it was. on Jean Talon?

The first one was on Jean Talon and the second one was in St. Henri. I remember going there all the time for sure. That was fun.

Who were some of the heads you used to skate with when you were younger? Tison and Barry. Steve. Ah, ollie And Mer. Those guys were around. Shorty, all the old school cats. That was fun. Around that time in the early 90's we were like the first graffiti kids. That's when in Montreal there was like no graffiti nothing going on and we started taggin up the city. But we were like the first dozen or so cats doing that back in the day. Mersh, Maink, Zink and Gumby. All these

I remember like it was yesterday. There I am lying on the kitchen floor as always wearing my brown pj’s, which I wore ‘till adolescents, until they pretty much disintegrated and fell to the floor or ground, which ever. Vroom! Vroom! I says, the steel dinky car slams into my mother’s foot, “Hey watch out you little bugger, I’m trying to finish sup-per.” I looked up at her and said, “ Hey mom, I was trying to parallel park when you stepped on my 1982 David Hasselhoff signature series Trans-Am, hey mom where is dad ? ” “ I’m busy ” my mom replied. I’d been asking this question for years now and still no answer, so shit, this always works, “ Mom, mom, mom, where the fuck is my father ! ” “ Fine, if it will shut you up ! Listen up because I’m only gonna say this once, he went for a pack of smokes and never came back. ” “ When was this, I don’t remember ?” I bay “ It was nineteen eighty-four, he was watching T.V, all of a sudden he went silent, they had just announced that the show night Rider was cancelled, he just stood up and walked to the door. You were lying on the floor, you looked up at him, he bent over and handed you the nightrider car, with tears in his eyes, he said,” “I can’t believe it’s over, what am I gonna do now”. Just as he got to the door and gripped the knob, you asked him where he was going, “I’m going for some smokes” he replied, “I found this weird because your father didn’t smoke. With the door closing behind him, he was gone.”

At that very moment the phone rang, my mom answered, after talking for a few minutes, she hung up the phone, strolled passed me and sat on the couch “Hey mom, who was that ?” “You won’t believe me if I tell you” she replied, “shit mom come on, who was it?” “Okay fine, that was your father and he’s coming home”. “no way, what took him so long?” My mom sat there speechless and finally uttered the reason why, “He said that there’s this new show called Baywatch and he’s coming home to watch it.”

VB vernissageLe samedi 27 mars fut une soirée que je n’oublierai jamais. Mais je ne me souviens pas de grand choses! C’était le board release party de Barry Walsh (True North), Mike Townsend et Lee Robert (New Era). C’était aussi une rare réunion des Valoiz Boys ainsi qu’un bash des skateurs de Montréal. Disons que le party a fini de bon’heure. Le lendemain! Le tout s’est déroulé chez Mike où son frère Steve et son père Roy étaient sans doute en charge et en contrôle du bar. L’ambiance était vraisemblablement parfaite: plein de monde, une quantité industrielle de bière, une table de pool, plein de photos sur les murs, un dj et plein de sourires. Dj Mossman a arrêté de spinner quand les oiseaux ont commencé à chanter. Il a même eu une rare session de rhymes performée par un nommé Drunk D et Quiz !? Ha, ha, ha! Mais je ne m’en souviens pas trop, il était rendu très tard ! Il y avait beaucoup de product toss, et tout le monde a eu un blast ! Checkez les boards, ils sont sick.-D

on the Thrasher website I won two wristbands to the Thrasher Skater of the Year Party. It was a cold beggining of December for my first Quebec Winter, so I though, why not G'iver. Armed with only my skateboard, my backpack, and my old school tape recorder that's probably the size of a six pack, I hoped on a plane to SF for a quick three days of skating, partying, and camaraderie, in the warmer Western temperatures of California. From there I met up with a friend from the Slap Message board, and spent the next two and a half days drinking hard and skating around the city. only to get back on the plane too soon and come home.

Home to Montreal. So here are some of my paparazzi photos from their annual holiday bash that included a great opening act by girl band ACD/SHE, punk rock karaoke, a video presentation by the Gonz, and an appearance from Nikki Sixx.
