4
Global patent and non-patent content complements value-added information in CAS and Thomson Reuters databases
• The most essential STN content ‒ CAplusSM and CAS REGISTRYSM
‒ DWPISM and DCR
• Global patent content ‒ INPADOC, AUPATFULL, CANPATFULL, CNFULL, DEFULL, EPFULL,
FRFULL, GBFULL, INFULL, JPFULL, KRFULL, PCTFULL, USFULL
• Premier biomedical and life science content ‒ BIOSIS®, CABA, EmbaseTM, FSTA, MEDLINE®
Note: Databases highlighted in blue on this slide were added in the latest release of new STN.
6
New STN workflow is oriented around projects
Projects allow you to: • Easily return to previous work • Reuse common queries • Update searches with the most current
information
To create a project, click the icon.

Select databases
Note: The actual accessible content will depend on your organization’s current STN contract status.
If necessary, click Select Databases.
Check a box to select the database(s) that you want to search.
Click to close the dialog box. Alternatively, press the <Esc> key.

Text search operators
• Truncation operators can be used in any combination, including internally. • Truncation can be added to all fields.
Operator Type Operator Example
Numeric >, <, =, >=, =>, =<, <=, - 2007-2011/PY
Boolean (logical) AND, NOT, OR L’OREAL/PA AND A61K/IPC
Textual Proximity (W), (A), (S), (P) STYRENE (3A) COPOLYMER
Relational Proximity (U), (D) CN/PC (U) 2008/PY
Truncation *, #, ! MICRO*ELEC*
11
Search examples compared to classic STN
Most text searches work like classic STN. • Do not type the “S” for search! • Use an asterisk (*) instead of question mark (?) for unlimited truncation

(D) operator: Precision at the DWPI member level
So, what’s happening here? The (D) operator ensures that “metallocene catalyst” occurs specifically in Chinese (CN) family member claims (/CLM).
Tip: English-language claims for China (CN) are available in DWPI from 2008 onwards.

The STN Extended Patent Family integrates all patent databases into a single table.
22
Export from the STN Extended Patent Family table can include table (.xlsx) and results (.docx)
23
Create Term Lists
• Use Create Term List to extract data and transfer terms to other files for searching
• Main focus is on patent information ‒ PN, PNK, PRN, AP available in all patent files ‒ Basic versions (.B) available in patent family files ‒ RN, CN and DOI are also available
• Term Lists are identified by Q# ‒ Permanent asset, project independent ‒ Can be searched in combination with other terms ‒ Can be re-qualified with one or more field codes

Agenda
34
Structure searching in new STN
• Structure queries created using the Structure Editor can be simultaneously searched in DCR and REGISTRY
• Structure queries are added to the Structures tab of the History panel and assigned STR numbers
• Standard options, including SSS and CSS, are supported in both DCR and REGISTRY using a simple query syntax, e.g. ‒ STR1/SSS,FULL (full database substructure search) ‒ STR1/CSS,FULL (full database closed substructure search)
• Structure displays include structure highlighting
• Tags can be added to structures in the history panel
• Use the REFX cross file search operator to retrieve references
35
Prepare structure queries using the structure editor
• Right click on a node or bond to change Attribute Values
• Mouse over the query or attribute panel to verify Attribute Values
• Click OK to add the query to the structures tab of the history panel
Block substitution with the lock atoms tool.
36
Structure search workflow in new STN • Structure queries are assigned STR
numbers for searching • Hit portion of the structure is
highlighted for easier evaluation • Use REFX to retrieve references
260 substances in DCR (L1) correspond to 110 patent records in DWPI (L2).
37
. . . .
DCR hit structures in the DWPI detailed display full view
DCR hit structures are automatically displayed and include hit highlighting.
38
Use the SUBX cross file search operator to retrieve DCR substance records from a text search in DWPI
A search in DWPI for recent anti-cancer patents from Sanofi (SNFI-C) (L6).
SUBX L6 retrieves the DCR substance records indexed in the patent records (L7).
39
Automatic Cross File Search between DWPI and DCR is OFF by default.
Cross File Search setting applies REFX and SUBX to searches automatically
Click to enable automatic Cross File search (example later…).
