Almetrics
Altmetrics is the study and use of non-traditional scholarly impact measures that are based on activity in web-based environments. As scholarship increasingly
moves online, these metrics track associated interactions and activity to generate fine-grained data,
allowing researchers and policy makers to create a higher resolution picture of the reach and impact of
academic research.

Impactstory
Impactstory is an open-source, web-based tool that helps scientists explore and share the diverse impacts of all
their research products—from traditional ones like journal articles, to emerging products like blog posts, datasets,
and software. By helping scientists tell data-driven stories about their impacts, we're helping to build a new
scholarly reward system that values and encourages web-native scholarship.

Note: Impactstory is one of the leading almetrics services that are available. Others include Altmetric and Plum Analytics.
Concept of Impactstory
• ImpactStory follows open practices with its data - to the extent allowed by providers’ terms of service.
• It provides context to its metrics so that they are meaningful to non-experts: for example, someone may not know if five forks on GitHub is a lot of attention, but they can understand immediately if their project ranked in the 95th percentile of all GitHub repos created that year.
• The metrics provided by ImpactStory can be used by researchers who want to know how many times their work has been downloaded and shared, and also research funders who are interested in the impact of research beyond only considering citations to journal articles

How are altmetrics being used?
Researchers are beginning to include altmetrics in their promotion and tenure packages, CVs, grant applications and resumes in several ways:
• In the narrative section, they list raw counts--akin to how many people use bibliometrics (e.g. "This study has been shared in over 70 news outlets worldwide")
• In their CV, they list raw counts under bullet-pointed publications that have seen a lot of attention
• In either their CV or narrative, they list percentile performance, giving better context to raw counts (e.g. "This paper has received a volume of online attention that is among the top 5% of papers published by Nature in the same time period.")
