Quality, not Quantity, is what makes us special

welcome to ‘Explore Tanzania’ – a comprehensive

guide to our nation’s hotels, lodges and camps.

Recognising the need for such a publication, the

Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) took the opportunity to support

this guide in order to enhance the level of information available

to prospective visitors to our beautiful country.

After all, Tanzania offers some of Africa’s finest game viewing

in our well managed parks with their high concentrations

of animals, of which the Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti’s

animal migration and Mt Kilimanjaro are among the Seven

Natural Wonders of Africa. Thankfully, Tanzania continues

to pursue a policy whereby the quality of visitors is more

important than sheer numbers. And this is also true for the

accommodation in our wildlife reserves.

perfect for business and leisure

Of course, Tanzania is much more than just wildlife. The

islands of Mafia and Zanzibar have powder-white beaches

and a dazzlingly eclectic collection of properties, ranging from

classy hotels to simple but charming guest-houses.

Dar es Salaam, our commercial capital, has fine hotels

catering for visiting business executives and conference

delegates. In addition to being the gateway to the

Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti and Arusha, too, is

active in the conference sector.

So whatever your reason for visiting Tanzania and

whatever your budget, I’m sure we have the exact

property for you and, what’s more, we look forward

to seeing you.

Karibu sana.

INTRODUCTION

natural wonders, friendly people, great food – tanzania has it all

karibu! Welcome! The East African state of Tanzania

is home to some of the world’s most iconic tourist

destinations. They include the rolling savannahs

of Serengeti, the towering edifice of Mount Kilimanjaro,

the exotic island of Zanzibar and the natural wonders of

Ngorongoro.

Tanzania, which is four times larger than the UK, boasts some

320 types of mammal, 1,200 bird species and 10,000 plant

species. They are found across a landscape ranging from

dense forest to dusty plains. Visitors can trek through fertile

highlands or swim off palm-fringed beaches.

heritage and culture

Similarly diverse are the 45 million inhabitants of Tanzania.

This remarkably peaceful nation is formed by over 120 tribes

together with South Asian, Arab and other groups. The result

of this mix is a rich history that can be traced back some 3.6

million years to humanity’s earliest known ancestors, who

left their footprints near Olduvai Gorge in northern Tanzania.

Down the centuries, waves of migrants, many from the

Bantu-speaking tribes, moved across the land mass we

know today as Tanzania.

A vibrant culture with international connections

flourished along the Swahili coast before the land

was colonised by Germany in the 19th century.

The mainland, known as Tanganyika, came under

British rule in 1918. This lasted until a liberation

movement propelled Julius Nyerere into power

and united Tanganyika with Zanzibar in 1963 to

form Tanzania. His leadership, which lasted until

1985, will be remembered most for socialist

economic planning and a fierce commitment

to African liberation movements. At one point,

the peace of Nyerere’s Tanzania was shattered

when it went to war to crush President Idi Amin of

Uganda, who attacked Tanzania in 1978.

Western-style multi-party democracy was promoted from

the 1990s and economic liberalisation has seen the rise of

an enterprising middle class. The discovery of oil and gas

presents new opportunities for a nation that remains heavily

dependent on Western aid.

The people of Tanzania are known for their friendly and

fun-loving nature. By using a little Swahili and familiarising

themselves with local customs, visitors can enjoy cordial

interactions with the Tanzanians they meet. It should be noted

that almost half the population are Muslim and one is likely to

encounter many people who follow the practices of that faith.

Tanzania is a tropical country but has regional weather

variations. The coastal and lake zone regions are mostly hot

and humid. The northern

and south-west

Page 10: Explore Tanzania 2013-14

EXPLORE TANZANIA

highlands are cooler. The long rains fall from March to May,

while the short rains normally last from November to January.

Try to take a safari between June and September. This is

ideal for game viewing because the weather is less humid

and the roads are not affected by rain. When planning a visit,

also remember that the Islamic holy month of Ramadan can

impact on certain areas of daily life.

getting around

Most visitors fly into the commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, or

into Kilimanjaro, an hour by car from the northern safari hub

of Arusha. Zanzibar also has an international airport. Smaller

airports can be found in destinations such as Mwanza and

Kigoma. Various regional and international airlines provide

connecting services. A hired 4x4 vehicle is the best way to

travel by road. There are also reputable taxis. Motorcyles

and three-wheeled Bajaj services are convenient for

negotiating the congested streets in Dar es

Salaam, but local dala dala buses are a safer

option. For longer distances it is possible

to travel by train or long-distance

bus. Check with a reliable source

for up-to-date schedules, routes

and safest options. Zanzibar

can be reached by ferry, while

Lake Victoria and Lake Nyasa

have boat services. Rural

areas and urban secondary

roads are suitable for cycling,

although mountain bikes are

recommended for areas with poor

surfaces.

By using common sense and

following reliable travel

advice, visitors can be

sure of a safe and

enjoyable stay in

Tanzania. Travellers

should make sure

they have all

the necessary

entry and

immunization

requirements.

Also remember

travel insurance and any medication needed as visitors may

struggle to find locally. Use reliable foreign exchange facilities

and be mindful that ATMs may not always be accessible or

reliable. Be familiar with basic health precautions while being

aware of the risks of heat and sun exposure. Use reliable

medical facilities if treatment is needed and be mindful of the

hazards posed in remote areas.

accommodation

There is a range of accommodation options across the nation.

They include budget camps, hostels and guest houses.

Mid-range hotels can be found in most major towns. Beach

bungalows and coastal resorts offer a range of rates and

comfort levels. In major centres there will be the equivalent of

four-star hotels offering a range of facilities and room options.

They will often have conference and event facilities. Business

and conference travellers are well catered for in the major

8

9

hotels with a full range of amenities and services. Short-stay

apartments are available in Dar es Salaam. Safari operators can

arrange various types of accommodation such as mid-range or

high-end lodges, mobile ‘fly’ camps and luxury tented options.

Tanzania has outstanding safari options. In addition to day

and night game drives, visitors can admire the bush from

a hot air balloon, boat, on foot or horseback depending

on the destination. There are dedicated safaris, too, for

photographers, birdwatchers and other special interest

groups. Many safari packages include a cultural tour to

explore the traditions and everyday life of local communities.

Look beyond the national parks, however, to find an array of

historical sites, experiences and places to see. Check online

listings and consult your tour operator to find out about the

local art scenes in the area where you are staying. There is

a range of cultural and heritage gems from rock paintings

to art festivals. Visitors can hike, paraglide, fish, canoe,

climb and even volunteer skills to help

a good cause or a local community.

Beach resorts offer water sports

and access to a range of aquatic

life. For nightlife, there are casinos

and smart hotel bars in Dar es

Salaam. Smaller towns have bars

with live bands or small clubs with

DJs playing the local hip-hop (or

bongo flava) plus popular African

and Western hits.

delectable cuisine

There is an array of food and drink choices

across Tanzania, reflecting the ethnicity of

the population. Tasty street food can be found

night and day in major towns. Outdoor ‘Mama

Lishe’ eateries offer plentiful portions of local dishes

for breakfast or lunch. Bars are best for grilled meat (nyama

choma) while the better hotels offer a variety of cuisine.

The coast has outstanding seafood, while the lake zone has

plentiful supplies of freshwater fish. There is also Italian, Indian

and Chinese food in major centres. Look out for top quality

tea and coffee grown in fertile areas. Stronger refreshment

ranges from local lagers and spirits to banana, papaya and

palm wines. The Dodoma region is working hard to produce

palatable still and sparkling wines.

celebrate

Tanzania is an ideal destination for weddings, honeymoons

and other special occasions. Many tour operators, hotels and

lodges offer a comprehensive planning service to create a

dream experience. Couples may wish to marry in the romantic

surroundings of a safari lodge or celebrate an anniversary

on an isolated beach. Every detail can be arranged for the

wedding party.

Finally, when planning a visit, consider how to support

responsible tourism in Tanzania. This means supporting

tourism and hospitality services that work to benefit local

economies, help preserve the natural environment, safeguard

cultures and protect heritage. Small changes in travel can

all make a positive difference. This will help ensure that the

treasures of Tanzania are here for future generations to see

and enjoy.

ideal conference centre with attractive options

the small city of Arusha in northern Tanzania is

one of the most popular conference and meeting

destinations in East Africa.

Arusha airport is used for various domestic routes, including

Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, while Kilimanjaro International

Airport, a 45-minute drive from Arusha, handles both

domestic and international flights. Arusha is about five hours

by car from Nairobi.

The Arusha International Conference Centre has 10 meeting

rooms with seating capacities ranging from 10 in the smallest

break-out room to 1,350 in the main auditorium. One meeting

room is the temporary seat of the East African Legislative

Assembly (EALA). All rooms have simultaneous interpretation

systems, multimedia projectors and other audiovisual

equipment. The Centre hosts an average of 100 meetings for

some 11,000 delegates annually.

Arusha and surrounding

areas have a wide selection

of accommodation to

suit various budgets; so

conference delegates

visiting Arusha have

a variety of options.

Many of these hotels

and lodges are also ideal

venues for meetings,

conferences and corporate

events. At each venue,

experienced staff are on hand

to deal with every requirement

in relation to meetings, training and

hospitality. When planning an event,

organisers should be aware of any major

gatherings (such as the annual Karibu Fair for the

tourism trade) that may put pressure on accommodation.

conference hub

Arusha is a compact town offering a range of facilities that

include banking, medical, shopping, currency exchange

and tourism services. Yearly temperatures range from 13° to

25°C. As the main stopover on the Northern Safari Circuit of

Tanzania, the town is ideally placed for a pre-conference or

post-conference excursion to one of several national parks.

Visitors can also choose to fly for a beach break in Zanzibar.

Those who decide to stay in Arusha can explore its own

national park, which contains Mount Meru. The town also has

a popular craft market, local cultural tours and a tanzanite

centre, where visitors can learn about the famous gemstone

that is mined nearby. Those who have made suitable

preparations may opt to climb nearby Mount Kilimanjaro.© K

Mountains, craters and rare aniMals

a one-hour drive from Kilimanjaro

International Airport will bring the

visitor to the heart of Tanzania’s northern

highlands. Visitors can also fly into Arusha

Airport or travel by bus from Nairobi or Dar

es Salaam. Arusha is a safari stopover and

an ideal place to buy tanzanite, crafts and

souvenirs. Just 45 km from the town is Arusha

National Park, which can be explored by

vehicle, foot or canoe. Mount Meru, within the

park, is often trekked in preparation for the

more challenging climb to Kilimanjaro, Africa’s

highest peak. Visitors can also climb Ol Doinyo

Lengai, East Africa’s only active volcano, located

south of Lake Natron. One can camp here and enjoy

amazing views of the Rift Valley.

Arusha is the gateway to some of the world’s top safari

destinations. Just 120 km from the town is Lake Manyara

National Park, a relatively small park containing both thick

bushland and forest, with some 350 species of birds and

mammals. The springs here provide a constant source

of water to the flora and fauna and the park is ideal

for year-round game viewing. Tourists can visit the

park on a day trip from Arusha or stay overnight

in one of the campsites or lodges both inside

and outside the park.

Migration

South-east of Manyara is an area of

terrain covering 4,000 sq km comprising

Tarangire National Park and the adjoining

Conservation Area. Tarangire is famous

for its elephant herds, ancient baobab

trees and tree-climbing lions. It also

the setting for an annual migration of

elephant, wildebeest, zebra and fringe-

eared oryx. Camping facilities are available

inside and outside the park, with more comfortable lodge

and camp options to be found within the national park and

conservation area.

‘cradle of Mankind’

Ngorongoro, a United Nations World Heritage Site, is a

multi-use conservation area covering 8,200 sq km – a place

where the Maasai communities live side by side with game.

It is known as the ‘Cradle of Mankind’ because of the ancient

hominid finds from Oldupai Gorge, providing clues to the

origins of mankind. Visitors can descend into one of the

world’s largest volcanic craters to see some 30,000 large

mammals. This is a place of grassland, forests and swamps.

around Lake Magadi, while the rare black rhino

can be found in the surrounding grassland. Within

the conservation area there are a number of luxury

lodges. Campsites, hotels and lodges in various

price ranges are found nearby in the Karatu area.

‘land of endless plains’

Serengeti, the ‘land of endless plains’, has a national park

covering 14,760 sq km and is famous for the annual wildlife

migration between December and July. Visitors can access

the park by road or fly to one of several airstrips in the vicinity.

Game viewing can also be enjoyed beyond the park gates.

Serengeti is famous for its lions, leopards and cheetahs and

visitors will also find scavengers such as spotted hyenas (which

also hunt) and side-striped jackals. If budgets permit, take

a dawn balloon ride to really appreciate the vastness of this

natural wonder. Camping in the park is the most affordable

way to stay in Serengeti, although it may be hard to secure

a booking. The lodges and luxury camps are also extremely

popular. Various accommodation options are available outside

the park, also featuring wildlife and striking scenery.

The northern highlands are home to Mount Kilimanjaro,

which can be ascended by various routes if properly

prepared for the trek. Also in the highlands is Tanzania’s

newest national park, Mkomazi, covering 3,300 sq km.

This is the scene of a series of remarkable conservation

efforts, including the

reintroduction of the

critically endangered black

rhino and African wild dog.

hiking, cycling and excursions

Passing down through the Usambara Mountains, the visitor

will also find the beautiful forests of the Amani Nature

Reserve, which can be explored on foot or bicycle. One

trail passes through the Amani Botanical Garden, with 300

species of trees. Lushoto has a choice of accommodation

and also offers cultural tourism excursions. There are

opportunities to visit the communities who live across the

Northern Circuit such as the cattle-keeping Maasai and the

hunter-gatherer Hadzabe.

Visitors can expect to find some of the most dramatic

wilderness in the country in the Southern Circuit,

where safari destinations are perhaps less visited

than their northern counterparts. Most safari

excursions start from Dar es Salaam.

It is easy to combine a Southern

Circuit safari with a beach

getaway in Zanzibar or

along the Swahili coast.

The circuit also has

good connections

with upcountry

national parks.

Ruaha National Park,

covering over 20,000

sq km, is noted for its

antelopes, including

species like the greater

kudu, which cannot

be found in any other

national park. The park

is also a habitat for

endangered

wild dogs.

Inside and

outside the park there are campsites of various standards. The

fly camping option allows guests to follow the movement of

animals in magnificent but mobile-tented luxury. There are

also several lodges.

biodiVersity

The Selous Game Reserve is the largest protected area for

wildlife in the world. The Rufiji River creates a vast range of

terrain and habitat within the 54,600 sq km reserve. This

United Nations World Heritage Site is Africa’s second-largest

wildlife sanctuary. It contains about 750,000 large mammals

including 65,000 elephant, up to 150,000 buffalo, 40,000

hippo and 4,000 lion. Walking safaris, boat trips and hunting

are all permitted. Accommodation options include public

campsites, fly camping and luxury permanent tented camps

and lodges.

Udzungwa Mountains National Park is one of the most

biodiverse habitats on earth. New species of animals and

plant life continue to be discovered in this wilderness area

covering 1,900 sq km. It is a perfect destination for hiking and

an ideal way to see Tanzania’s largest selection of primates.

There are several trails lasting from about an hour to a six-day

expedition. There is a range of places to stay in the vicinity,

such as campsites, lodges and hotels.

discoVer game reserVes

North of the Udzungwa Mountains is Mikumi National Park,

a four-hour drive from Dar es Salaam. Covering some 3,230

sq km and featuring both grassy plains and woodland, it is

an ideal weekend safari destination for anyone staying in

the surrounding regions of Tanzania. A wide selection of

mammals can be seen on a typical game drive, including

elephant, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, warthog, wildebeest and

impala. Guests may also spot groups of lion, hyena, jackal and

eland. The park has various luxury accommodation options,

while camping is also available outside. In addition, the

surrounding area has a choice of places to stay.

Saadani Game Reserve, about four hours’ drive north of Dar es

Salaam, is sometimes included in the Northern Safari Circuit

by tour operators. Covering 1,000 sq km, this marine, riverine

and terrestrial habitat is home to over 30 large mammals.

Visitors can enjoy game drives, walking safaris and boat tours.

There are also beach walks, with an opportunity to see the

nesting grounds of rare green turtles. Visitors often come

up from the coastal area of Pangani or stay at the exclusive

accommodation options around the reserve.

cUltUral toUrs

Beyond the popular safari destinations there are cultural tours

around the towns of Iringa and Mbeya. From Mbeya, visitors

can take a day trip to the Ngozi Crater Lake. Between Mbeya

The SOUTheRN SAFARI cIRcUIT

and Njombe lies the Kitulo National Park, covering

just 135 sq km, a treasure trove of flora and fauna

with over 50 species of orchids. Down at the

border with Malawi is Lake Nyasa, which

can best be admired by taking a ferry ride,

although sailing times can be erratic.

Mbeya has an airport with flights to

and from Dar es Salaam. One can

also fly to Ruaha. Flying to the region

is a better option than the Tazara

Railway, which runs between Dar es

Salaam and the Zambian border – a

journey regarded by many as long

and uncomfortable.

Any reputable tour operator will be

happy to create an attractive itinerary

for exploring this spectacular area.

although the Coastal (or Eastern) Circuit has seen

less tourism development than other areas of the

country, it is now much easier to access, while

accommodation has improved significantly.

It is the smallest safari circuit in Tanzania – a fabulous

destination for exploring unspoilt habitats, enjoying water

sports, viewing historical sites and relaxing on post-safari

beach breaks.

follow in the footsteps of sUltans

Visitors to the 800 km of Tanzanian coastline follow in the

footsteps of merchants, sultans and explorers. It is a place

of ancient trading routes that saw the Swahili civilization

flourish and thousands of people shipped to

the New World in chains. This circuit also covers

the Zanzibar Archipelago off the Swahili coast.

Saadani National Park, where bush meets beach,

is featured in our Northern section but is often

included in this circuit.

cUltUre and good food

Dar es Salaam, the commercial hub of the nation,

is a convenient stopover. This lively business and

conference destination also contains sights of interest

to the visitor. Just across the harbour is Kigamboni where

visitors can find beach accommodation along the coast. Further

out of town towards Kunduchi there are several beach hotels.

Anyone who spends a few hours exploring the downtown area

of this Swahili city will find a rich mix of cultures. There are good

hotel restaurants serving fresh seafood bought daily from the

fish market. The Msasani Peninsula is great for nightlife and

evening street food at Coco Beach. Here visitors will also find

the Tinga Tinga artists and craft offerings at Slipway. Further out

to Mwenge its possible to explore the craft market before

heading back to the city centre via Ocean Road – perhaps

with a stop for some refreshing coconut water – to enjoy

the tranquil Botanical Gardens.

arts in bagamoyo

Bagamoyo, 72 km from Dar es Salaam, was a major

East African trading port in the 19th century. Many

of the great explorers passed through here and it has

strong links with Christian missionaries. Swahili and

German colonial-style buildings can still be seen and

the Roman Catholic Mission Museum helps explain the

historical significance of the place. Today Bagamoyo is

known for its arts festival, sculpture school and creative

community. Just 5 km to the south are the ruins of Kaole, once

a major trading town.

Heading north by road for some 350 km from Dar es

Salaam, visitors can reach Tanga port. There are also

flights from Dar es Salaam, Arusha and Zanzibar. The

town’s 19th century buildings display both Indian and

colonial influences. Further afield, a popular attraction is

limestone Amboni Caves, covering 15 sq km.

pangani

The sleepy town of Pangani lies at the mouth of Tanzania’s

second-largest river. This former slave port has a few

crumbling relics of its painful history, not least the harsh era of

colonial rule by imperial Germany. Tour operators can advise

on cultural tourist programmes and town walks. On either side

of the town there is a choice of accommodation along pristine

beaches. Snorkelling and diving enthusiasts should head

13 km south-east of Pangani to discover the Maziwe Island

Marine Reserve.

wildlife and heritage

The Mafia Archipelago, 130 km south of Dar es Salaam, is easily

reached by air from Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. This former

slave-trading centre has historical ruins linked to the days of

Arab and German colonial rule. Visitors can take a trail to see the

giant Comoros fruit bats and enjoy superb birdwatching. The

Mafia Island Marine Park, covering 822 sq km of reefs, coast and

mangroves, is an important nesting site for hawksbill and green

turtles. Mafia is famous for its snorkelling and scuba diving

and has dive centres in the exclusive accommodation around

Chole Bay on the main island. Other hotel options are available

around the main town of Kilindoni.

The Kilwa Peninsula

can be accessed by air

from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar

and Mafia. The beach hotels near

the small town of Kilwa Masoko provide a

convenient base for snorkelling, diving or exploring the

Swahili ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani island. back to the 14th century,

this United Nations World Heritage Site can be accessed by

traditional dhow or motorboat. Other ruins can be found

on nearby islands. The town of Kilwa Kivinje flourished in

the 19th century as a slaving centre and finally came under

German rule. There are ruins from colonial times around the

small settlement.

Further south, Lindi, Mtwara and Mikidani offer more

opportunities to explore the heritage and marine attractions

of the coast. The Mnazi Bay-Ruvuma Estuary Marine Park is

ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving.

The Great Lakes Circuit is often described as the least

visited part of Tanzania; but for the adventurous

traveller it offers an amazing variety of attractions.

Visitors should allow at least four days for a

visit to any park. There are two parks

where one can trek chimpanzees;

but for those prepared to

explore further there is far

more to be seen. Kigoma,

Lake Tanganyika’s

busiest port, is often

the starting point

for a safari. It can

be reached by train

from Dar es Salaam

or Tabora. Flights

come in daily to

Kigoma from Dar es

Salaam. Charter flights

also come in from Arusha

and other places. Lake

Tanganyika is the

second-largest

lake in Africa

as well as the longest and second-deepest freshwater lake in

the world. There are lakeshore hotels and two private beaches

south of Kigoma. Nearby Ujiji is associated with many of the

epic European explorations of the 19th century and often

attracts visitors.

primaTes

The best time to enjoy this circuit is during the dry season

as driving can be very difficult when it rains. During the dry

season visitors will find that the wildlife is often concentrated

around the rivers within the parks, which makes game

viewing much easier. For chimpanzees, however, visitors may

find it easier to spot them during the rain seasons as they do

not have to scatter very far in order to find water sources.

About 16 km north of Kigoma are the river valleys of Gombe

Stream National Park, the smallest of Tanzania’s national parks,

covering just 52 sq km. Visitors will not find big game viewing

in the evergreen forests, but there is a host of primates,

including chimpanzees. Looking closer, one can spot some

230 species of birds and 250 kinds of butterfly. Visitors can

access the park by boat and then trek on foot in small groups.

Tour operators will be happy to ensure that visitors are

properly booked, as chimp treks are restricted.

chimpanzees

The Mahale Mountains National Park, about 120 km south

of Kigoma, combines habitats and species from both East

and West Africa. Bordering Lake Tanganyika, the 1,613 sq

km national park encompasses forest, mountain, woodland,

savanna and lake habitats. Big game can be spotted here, as

well as an amazing variety of birdlife and butterfly species.

Mahala is famous for its chimpanzees, numbering about

1,000 in all; but visitors need to be patient when trying to

spot them. As with Gombe Stream National Park, chimp treks

chimps, birds, buTTerflies and specTacular lakes

are limited and should be planned by the tour operator.

Visitors travel around the park by boat and then trek on foot.

For accommodation, there is a choice between relatively

inexpensive and very exclusive.

lake vicToria

Those who venture into the Rukwa region will discover Katavi

National Park, covering some 4,470 sq km. There are flights

from Arusha, Serengeti and other places, although some

visitors drive there from Ruaha National Park. Seasonally

flooded grassland attracts a wealth of wildlife and it is possible

to view game on foot accompanied by an armed ranger.

Katavi is famed for its hippo. During the dry season, visitors

can expect to find up to 4,000 elephant, 1,000 buffalo and

other game concentrated around the sparse sources of water.

There are some luxury tented camps at Katavi, while other

accommodation options can also be found.

The Great Lakes Circuit has other attractions for those

willing to explore. To the north-west lie the town

of Mwanza and the magnificent Lake Victoria

covering 69,000 sq km. Here, there are

opportunities to explore the lake and local

Sukuma culture. Heading out to the Kagera

region, visitors will find ancient rock

paintings, cultural tours and Rubondo

Island National Park. The park, covering

240 sq km, allows visitors to observe a

variety of mammals and rare plant life on

foot or by boat. It is best known, however,

for its 430 species of birds. There are

scheduled flights from Arusha, Mwanza

and other locations in peak season, and

charter flights only in low season. Visitors

can travel by road from Mwanza and then

take a boat.

The Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO)

was established in 1983 to promote and represent

individual tour operators in Tanzania and at

international level. It was established at the peak of

Tanzania’s economic crisis, when the economy was

dominated by the public sector. TATO aims to unify the

interests of private tour operators by engaging the

government in dialogue to promote tourism and by

working to achieve a high quality of tourist services, both

nationally and internationally. TATO has over 200 members.

Its strategic objectives include: promoting and facilitating

members to provide marketable tourist services into the local

and world markets; acting as a link between the members, the

government and its institutions; coordinating members and

helping them in all technical matters pertaining to tourism;

and promoting the ability of tour operators to interact

with the community at large and to protect the interests of

individual tourists.

Fascinating island with a rich and colourFul history

the Indian Ocean paradise of Zanzibar is an

archipelago made up of the main island

of Unguja, the smaller Pemba Islands and

several islets. It is located some 25 miles from the

Tanzanian coast. Unguja (popularly known as

Zanzibar) is 60 miles long and 20 miles wide. It

has a total area of about 650 square miles.

Zanzibar is mainly flat, but with a central ridge

running from north to south. The archipelago

has an interesting biodiversity. Its habitats –

tropical rainforest, mangrove, coastal aquatic

and marine – are home to a wide variety of plant

species, while the wildlife includes various endemic

mammals, birds and invertebrates. Perhaps the most

mysterious creature is the Zanzibar leopard, believed to

hunt in remote areas of the main island.

diverse culture

The 800,000 inhabitants of Zanzibar could be described as

a ‘mixture of mixtures’, reflecting the waves of incomers

to the archipelago over the centuries. Persian, Arab,

Indian, European, Bantu and other civilizations

have influenced and enriched the people of these

islands and this rich intermingling is reflected in

the Swahili language.

Zanzibar, like mainland Tanzania, has two rain

seasons. Temperatures are highest between

December and February and coolest from

May to September. The relative humidity

is high, meaning daily temperatures can

sometimes be as high as 40°C.

To reach the main island of Zanzibar,

visitors can make use of the reliable and

comfortable ferry services from Dar es Salaam.

Various Tanzanian airports also offer flights.

Pemba can be reached by air and ferry although sailings are

sometimes cancelled at short notice. On arrival in Zanzibar, it

is worth asking around for a trustworthy taxi driver to assist

throughout any stay. You can also use the dala dala public

buses to cross the island. Car and bike hire is also possible and

upmarket hotels provide vehicles with drivers if required. The

best way to explore Stone Town, however, is on foot.

saFe and welcoming

Zanzibar has a reputation as a safe and welcoming place.

Incidents of street robbery do occur in Stone Town, but many

tourists walk around the maze of streets undisturbed both

night and day. Avoid deserted beaches in the evening and

lock valuables safely in the hotel room or beach

hut. The streets are particularly deserted in the

early evening during the Muslim holy month of

Ramadan. Many normal routines are changed

during this period and may impact on any holiday.

Stone Town is the most obvious starting place for an

exploration of the main island. Visitors will find small

shops, cafés and mosques among a maze of streets filled

with traditional houses, dating mainly from the 19th century.

There are many reminders of Zanzibar’s history as a slave

trading centre. The Anglican Cathedral, for example, contains

original slave chambers. Nearly every street has carved doors

and other features drawn from the town’s Arab and Indian

cultures. Buildings on the waterfront reflect the wealth of the

island’s ancient rulers and traders. The superbly restored Old

Dispensary, the Palace Museum and the House of Wonders are

all open for visitors, while the imposing Old Fort is a reminder

of the Omani empire’s might. The town’s main market and

surrounding shops open the senses to the magical ingredients

that make up the local cuisine.

marine liFe

Further afield, visitors can explore historical ruins and tour the

spice plantations that have been a key source of income for

Zanzibar. Other notable destinations are the heavily forested

Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park, the Butterfly Centre and

Zala Park. Visitors can sail out to see dolphins from Menai Bay,

while giant turtles can be found on Prison Island.

Zanzibar’s reefs have an array of marine life, and diving and

snorkelling are popular water sports. On the east coast,

visitors can often

wade out to reefs for

snorkelling but should be

aware of incoming tides. The best

reefs are reached by boat. Diving reefs

and shipwrecks are found across the archipelago. The

Mnemba Atoll, off the north-east coast, is a popular area,

while Pemba has half of Tanzania’s reefs.

music and nightliFe

There is a showbiz connection with the rock star Freddie

Mercury, whose birthplace in Stone Town is now a live music

venue. There is a modest nightlife scene in the upmarket

hotels and bars of Stone Town. Authentic Zanzibari music is

provided by taarab orchestras.

67

EXPLORE ZANZIBAR

Accommodation varies from relatively simple hotels in Stone

Town to smart, boutique-style accommodation with fine

Swahili-style design. Along the coast you will find simple

beach huts on the sand, comfortable beach cottages and

exclusive top-end hotels. Pemba has a less developed

infrastructure than the main island, so there are far fewer

tourists and a narrower choice of accommodation.

delicious dishes

Zanzibari cuisine is well worth sampling. The evening street

food stalls of Stone Town’s Forodhani Gardens offer an exciting

introduction to treats such as Zanzibari pizza. In the old town,

visitors can stop for a roadside coffee, traditionally served

black in tiny cups with sweet offerings like kashata made

from nuts, coconut or sesame. Cafés will serve a more filling

breakfast of fresh bread (with coconut), chapatis and spiced

masala tea. For lunch, try the various biryanis for which

Zanzibar is famous. Across the island, seafood is

an ideal choice for dinner, with prices to suit

everyone. International cuisine can also

be enjoyed in central Stone Town.

perFect celebrations

Zanzibar is the perfect post-

safari beach retreat, and an

idyllic setting for weddings,

honeymoons and celebrations.

Tour operators and the

island’s hospitality sector are

on hand to create a unique

experience for visitors and their

guests. Conferences and business-

related meetings are also held

throughout the year on the

main island.

Stone Town is a

Site, but many

the flora and fauna of the islands and surrounding waters.

When planning a visit consider supporting responsible

tourism in Zanzibar. There are many tourism stakeholders

working to benefit local economies, help preserve the natural

environment and protect the nation’s heritage. Being sensitive

to Zanzibar’s inhabitants, their culture and surrounding

environment will make it possible to create a sustainable

future for this tiny but remarkable jewel of the Indian Ocean.

days oF spice and slave tradingZanzibar’s original settlers were Bantu-speaking Africans. Recent archaeological discoveries indicate that the people of Zanzibar and the Swahili Coast were interacting with other civilizations many generations before the Islamic traders who arrived in the 10th century. These merchants initially came from Persia; but it was the Arabs, especially Omanis, who had the greatest influence. The Omanis founded trading colonies, repelled the occupation of the Portuguese empire and in 1832 the Omani sultan actually moved his capital from Muscat to Zanzibar. The main island was now a major spice and slave-trading centre.

Zanzibar eventually became an independent sultanate; but the rising influence of the German and British empires in the 1800s eroded the power of the ruling dynasty. Eventually, de facto control passed to Great Britain, although a sultan remained in nominal control.

During the 20th century the population saw the rise of political groupings along ethnic lines. Despite political factions and hostilities, the British granted Zanzibar full independence in 1963.

The sultan at the time remained head of state, a move vehemently opposed by political groups representing the African majority. They overthrew the minority Arab elite in 1964 and the presidents of Zanzibar and Tanganyika signed an act of union, giving semi-autonomy to Zanzibar.

Key Festivals and events in ZanZibar

why not combine a beach holiday in Zanzibar with

one of these exciting events? Remember

to check dates and any ticket requirements

before going.

Sauti za Busara Swahili Music & Cultural Festival is a well-

established gathering that attracts leading Swahili-language

and other African musicians every February. Visitors can enjoy

concerts, films, creative networking and a wide selection of

fringe events. Visitors can shop at the festival market for food,

crafts, CDs and more.

celebration

The four-day Mwaka Kogwa celebration is held around the

third week of July in the village of Makunduchi in southern

Zanzibar. It features open-air events that have their origins

in the Persian religion

of Zoroastrianism.

Visitors are welcomed

to Makunduchi and

the other villages that

participate in this

festival. The villagers

believe that anyone

without a guest for this

holiday is unhappy.

Billed as East Africa’s largest

film, music and arts festival,

the Zanzibar International Film

Festival of the Dhow Countries in July

combines screenings, workshops, forums and

much more. It has been followed in recent years by a

cultural showcase attracting performers from Zanzibar and

across Africa.

Festival

The Jahari Literary and Jazz Festival is held in late August and

early September, featuring open-air jazz concerts, poetry

readings, story-telling and cultural walks. Founded in 2011,

this weekend festival has attracted an impressive range of

musicians, authors and other creative minds. The entire event

is held within the vicinity of Stone Town.

Zanzibar’s 1st Annual Half Marathon & Fun Run took place

in December 2012, taking runners through the historical

centre of Stone Town. For the serious runner, the Zanzibar

International Marathon is in November. The marathon course

is slightly hilly, crossing the island from east to west. Runners

should bear in mind that the air temperature in Zanzibar in

November is about 30° to 35°C.

great choice oF cuisine

6 Degrees South in Stone Town is a classic grill and

wine bar offering an eclectic choice of cuisine.

Located on the popular Shangani strip, flanked by

Tippu Tip’s House and the old English Club, the restaurant

bustles from morning to night, serving breakfast and fresh

pastries, lunch, confectionery, small plates and dinner. In

addition to lobster, prawns and line fish from the morning

catch, customers can indulge in slow-

roasted prime beef short rib or charcoal-

grilled aged rib-eye steak.

The restaurant is on three floors with

features of Zanzibari and European

architecture. There is an intimate upstairs

tea house, while the airy upper deck offers

romantic views and sunset cocktails.
