GREENPOINT Y EaRlY chIlDhOOD cENTERToddler & Little Kid | Ages 2 – 5 years* the early Childhood Center at the Greenpoint Y focuses on the developmental needs of each child in order to foster intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth. Using play based learning techniques, children are able to explore the environment safely as they experiment with hands-on activities. Learning takes place daily in science, math, literacy, dramatic play, art, and sensory centers.

physical development is a large component addressed through swim lessons (for those 3 and up), yoga, structured gym activities, free play, and trips to local parks. Children are encouraged to move throughout the day as they become more and more confident in their motor control.

our dedicated staff is trained using the latest research in early childhood education which is applied in our daily lessons. the role of the teachers is to guide children’s collaboration with peers and to provoke creative thinking.

IS YOUR SCHOOL PART OF THE YMCA’S SWIM FOR LIFE-2ND GRADE SWIM?Second grade is an ideal time for young people to take on new challenges, learn more skills and enhance their feelings of mastery and competence. Through Swim for Life, the YMCA of Greater New York seeks to offer children lessons in swimming skills and water safety that will keep them safe and build physical and social skills.

Swim for Life-2nd Grade Swim works to build on stu-dent’s aquatic skills, while enhancing self-confidence and well-being. Classes run in ten-week cycles dur-ing the academic year during school hours. Children are brought to their school’s local YMCA by school personnel who will remain with them throughout the changing process and at the pool area during swim lessons.

Swim for life-2nd Grade Swim students progress through a scientifically-based national YMCA curricu-lum that incorporates the following five components:

1. Personal Safety: Students learn to be safety conscious in and around the water. The information forms the basis of accident prevention. Survival skills, self-rescue and boating safety are taught.

2. Personal Growth: In learning new skills, students build self-esteem. They also learn the consequences of their choices in relation to water safety.

3. Stroke Development: Students are taught through stroke techniques. Paddling skills, treading, floating, basic rescue skills and safety using lifejack-ets are among those taught.

4. Water Games: Games are used to enhance skills learned. Retrieving objects underwater and passing a ball are examples of what is taught.

5. Rescue: Students learn safety techniques-know-ing when to yell for help, being able to go to an adult for assistance, reaching and throwing assists. For more information, please contact Jessica Wygand at (212) 912-2275.

For safety, children must be able to follow instructor’s direction. Class length is 30 minutes. instructor to participant ratio is 1:6. For more information, contact Jessica Wygand, Aquatics Director, at (212) 912-2275. Pike At this level, children usually begin attending classes with-out their parents. this level helps children develop safe pool behavior, adjust to the water, and develop independent move-ment in the water. it is designed for new swimmers, teaching basic paddle stroke and kicking skills, pool safety, and comfort in holding their faces in the water while blowing bubbles and swimming.

Eel this advanced beginner level reinforces pike skills. it is for children who are comfortable in the water. they are taught to flutter kick, dive, float, and perform the progressive paddle

stroke. Children can swim 5 feet across the pool without assistance by the end of this level.

Ray At this level, children review previous skills, improve stroke skills, build endurance by swimming on their front and back, and learn to tread water properly and perform more progres-sive diving skills. Children can swim 20 feet across the pool on their front and back without assistance by the end of this level.

Starfish Children at this level review previously learned skills and refine their crawl and back strokes and floating skills. They also learn underwater swimming skills. Children can swim 40 feet across the pool on the front and back at the end of this level.

YSchOOlS PROGRaM aT PS84 | GRaDES K-5Y Schools is a new program model that establishes a full-time Y presence in new York City schools. Beyond the presence of our existing Y After School Academy, Y Schools offer enhanced programs and services that extend from the opening school bell to day’s end with a focus on improving student academic performance.

each Y School will be centered upon a dynamic partnership with the school leadership and be focused building a comprehensive set of services for children and families. this community school approach will leverage public and private resources and include partnerships with local community based organizations.

During the school year, the YMCA will work with city schools to develop the YSchool model. Some of those schools are pS 84 in Williamsburg, pS 197 in Far rockaway, pS 57 on Staten island and pS 200 in Harlem. Y staff has been working with school leadership at each school to identify key issues in the school and develop concrete strategies to drive improvement.

Some of the core services that will be established at these schools include:

• Providing Support for English language learners the Y will work with the school to provide additional support for english Language Learners both in the classroom and in after school. through the Y’s work in launching six new American Welcome Centers and the Harlem Literacy Zone project for new Americans the Y has strong capacity and experience in the area of family literacy.

• Parent and caregiver Support Services The principal and teachers have identified parent and caregiver engagement as one of the primary barriers to student success. While there is an organization providing support services for parents in the school, there is the opportunity for the Y to provide specific services to engage parents in the academic lives of their children. these will range from having parents attend culminating events for afterschool to ongoing workshops on topics from children’s health to parenting workshops.

• Improving the School learning Environment there is the opportunity for the Y to have an immediate impact on the school learning environment through the development of structured programs before school, during recess and lunch time. This has been identified as a critical need by the schools and is an opportunity to build relationships that would support extended learning.

in addition the Y is working at pS 197 (tASC expandeD) and pS 84 (YUSA pilot program) on pilot projects that focus on building strong academic outcomes through extended learning.

Determining Your child’s Swim level to help determine your child’s swim level, please refer to the descriptions of the swim levels provided in this brochure. Your child must be able to perform ALL the skills in the previ-ous level to be enrolled into the next level. Children learn physical skills at different rates; therefore, it is very common for children to repeat a level. All children will be swim-tested the first day of the session to determine if they are registered for the appropriate class. instruc-tors reserve the right to switch any participant who they feel is not enrolled in the appropriate level into the correct level.

Swim lesson Policies Although we strive for consistency in the teaching staff, there are oc-casions when a substitute teacher will be necessary. this is a better alternative than canceling a lesson. While we encourage parents to dis-cuss their child’s swim progress with the swim instructors, to help classes start on time please request an ap-pointment with the instructor if time between classes does not permit for a complete discussion.

Make-up lessons and Swim credit 1. Classes missed due to weather, holidays when the YMCA remains open, or by choice of the partici-pant cannot be made up, credited or refunded.

2. if a participant misses a private swim lesson and does not inform the instructor at least 24 hours prior to the lesson, there will be no credits, or make up lessons given. private swim lessons are non-refundable.

3. if a participant withdraws (with approval) from a swim class at least 1 week (7 days) in advance of the start of class, he or she will receive a full refund. A 50% refund will be granted to participants who with-draw (with approval) after attending 2 classes or less. no refund will be granted to participants who with-draw after the second class.

4. if a participant withdraws from a swim class for medical reasons he or she will receive a YMCA credit or refund for the remaining classes, if the request is accompanied by a doctor’s note.

Swim lessons 1. The first day of each session is reserved for swim testing and evalu-ations. All appropriate changes will be made to ensure quality instruc-tion for your child. if you have any questions about your child’s swim level after the first day of class, please contact Jessica Wygand, Aquatics Director, at (212) 912-2275.

2. Children will be moved up to the next level once all of the skills in the previous level have been completed. Many skills in certain levels depend on physical development, strength and coordination. please remember that each child is unique and devel-ops at his or her own pace and their progression through these levels varies greatly.

3. no street shoes are to be worn on our pool deck and that strollers do not come beyond the locker room doors. parents, please remember, that we are trying to keep a clean and healthy environment for your children and our participants.

4. For your child’s safety, to avoid

distractions and so our participants may receive the very best swim instruction, parents are invited to observe class during the first and last classes of each session. on other class days, parents may drop off children and remain for 5 min-utes, then return 5 minutes before the end of class. thank you for your understanding.

5. the Aquatics Department reserves the right to cancel and/or combine classes due to low enrollment.

Pool closures please see the Aquatics bulletin board located near our Free-Weight Room for notification of pool clo-sures, or visit www.ymcanyc.org/greenpoint.com.

TEENSWIMthe YMCA helps Youth develop valuable skills and a lifetime love of water, while instilling responsibility and safety instruction through five components, Personal Safety, Personal Growth, Stroke Development, Water Games, and Rescue.

YMca SWIM claSSES YMCA Swim Classes allow students to progress through a scientifically-based national YMCA curriculum that incorpo-rates the following five components:

1. personal Safety: Students learn to be safety conscious in and around water. the information forms the basis of accident prevention. Survival skills, self-rescue and boating safety are taught.

2. personal Growth: in learning new skills students build self-esteem. they also learn the consequences of their choices in relation to water safety.

3. Stroke Development: Students are taught through stroke techniques. Paddling skills, treading, floating, basic rescue skills and safety using lifejackets are among those taught.

4. Water Games: Games are used to enhance skills learned. retrieving objects underwater and passing a ball are ex-amples of what is taught.

5. rescue: Students learn safety techniques – knowing when to yell for help, being able to go to an adult for assistance, reaching and throwing assists.

For more information, contact Jessica Wygand, Aquatics Director, at (212) 912-2275.

Teen Beginner this class is for teens who have not had swimming lessons before or are not comfortable in the water. Basic swimming and water safety skills are taught in a fun, relaxed way. Teen Advanced Beginner Teens are acquainted with the pool, the use of flotation devices, and front and back floating. By the end of this level, they should know the front paddle stroke, side and back paddle, and some synchronized swimming and wetball move-ments.

Teen Intermediate teens continue to practice and build upon basic skills, now performing more skills without the aid of a flotation device. they are introduced to lead-up strokes to the front and back crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke, and elementary backstroke. More synchronized swimming and wetball skills are taught, as well as some diving skills.

Teen Advanced This is the initial intermediate skill. Teen further refine the lead-up strokes, they have learned as their skills become more like those normally used in swimming. they learn still more synchronized swimming and wetball.
