Ruth Thorne-Thomsen uses the simplest of imaging devices, the pinhole camera, to rethink the expressive potential of photography. By making or arranging subjects to be photographed by this technique, Thorne-Thomsen created her signature work: a dreamlike vision of wonder and discovery resulting in a landscape of imagination.

About Face: Contemporary PortraitureAugust 9, 2013–January 19, 2014 | Gallery L11

This exhibition explores the global diversity of contemporary photographic portraiture since 2000 and includes works by twenty-nine internationally acclaimed artists. In the museum galleries, visitors may access a complimentary online exhibition of contemporary portraiture, Making Pictures of People, produced in collaboration with Andy Adams of FlakPhoto.

Contemporary Native American artist Brad Kahlhamer transforms the Project Space with a magical, multi-tiered powwow float carrying 122 figurative and bird sculptures made of traditional materials and urban detritus. Welcome to his “Third Place.”

Exceptional works from the collection of Paul and Elissa Cahn explore the techniques, forms and politics of colonial American silver. On view throughout the museum, the exhibition explores the craft of the American silversmith, including techniques still in use today.

Echoes: Islamic Art and Contemporary Artists

Renowned contemporary Mexican artist Betsabeé Romero explores the world’s complex relationship with cars in two works of art: Sugar Skin (Piel de Azucár) and Cannon Fodder (Carne de Cañón). Acquired through the generosity of the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Trust.

Enrollment is on a first-call, first-served basis. Credit/debit card payment required.

Cost: Museum members receive a discount on classes, 30% for Society of Fellows and 20% for Friends of Art. The discounted member prices are listed in that order with the public price last.

Please provide the following information when you call: Student’s name, address, date of birth, home phone, emergency phone and the parent/guardian name. We accept individual enrollments only; one person may not enroll students from multiple families.

Enroll early—class size is limited. Enrollment deadline is three days prior to a class or workshop. Classes that do not reach a minimum enrollment will be cancelled and fees refunded.

Parking for museum members is free; nonmembers parking for more than 30 minutes, either to attend class or wait while their student is in class, will pay $5 per vehicle.

Cancellations/Transfer Credits: Students can cancel an enrollment five business days prior to a class or one-time workshop to receive a refund less a $15 cancellation fee per enrollment. Transfers from one class to another can be up until five business days prior to a class with a $10 transfer fee. No refunds or transfers will be made for cancellations made less than five business days prior or due to missing a class. We do not issue credits toward future classes or workshops if you cancel an enrollment or miss a class.
