Born in 1950 in Hong Kong and founded Alan Chan Design Company in 1980, Alan Chan is a designer, brand consultant and artist. Alan and his company have won more than 600 design awards locally and internationally. In 2002, Alan became the first Chinese designer to be invited by the prestigious Japanese graphic design gallery – Ginza Graphic Gallery in Tokyo to hold his solo exhibition. The ‘Oriental Passion Western Harmony’ design philosophy initiated by Alan has been well-recognized by the international design scene, and has brought immense influence to the younger generation of designers. Since 2000, Alan ventured into the new arena of fine arts. Besides being selected for Shanghai Biennale and Hong Kong Contemporary Art Award, he was also the first Hong Kong designer ever being invited to hold a solo exhibition at the Shanghai Art Museum in 2007. Another solo exhibition took place in Hong Kong Heritage Museum back in 2003 also received widespread acclaim. In 2010 Chan developed his iPhone photography series ‘iEye-ai’, which has been exhibited in various Asia cities.

“ ‘I think therefore I am’ — René DescartesThe ‘I’ from ‘I think therefore I am’ refers to a different person, which has been an irresistible trend. No matter in reality or in dreams, our perceiving and thinking continue. However, the natural simplicity in the real world makes people much warmer than the tedious polishing in the fantastic dreams. In the face of nature, between the dialogue of the earth and our inner selves, some intangible trends have been created. Peeping through the dust of centuries, the moment time slips by, in the shadow trends hide, and all natural changes are subject to some trends, for such is the way of Heaven and Earth. ‘Man obey the rules of the Earth, the Earth obey the rules of the Heaven, the Heaven obey the rules of Dao, and Dao obey the rules of the Nature’. From this, we can see that the law reflected by ‘Dao’ is ‘Natural’. Innovation comes from the courage of self-challenging, it demands sharpened expertise as well. Just as Zhu Xi, a poet in the Southern Song Dynasty, said ‘The fresh water comes from the springhead’.”

“ As to fashion, I put forward the subject of TOUCH: Touch is Luxury. Touch is about sensorial experience and imagination, metaphor and memory of lifestyle. If Luxury is defined to be an excellent comprehension on life which has never been experienced, and fashion is defined to be transition in duration of collective aesthetic feeling/taste, experience of touch shall be luxury, and creation of fashion shall be subject setting through touch experience and achievement of luxury reproduction formed by ingenious general collocation via color, texture and form.”
