Gunars A Gaikis is one of Canada's premier pharmaceutical patent litigators. He is a partner in Smart & Biggar /Fetherstonhaugh's Toronto office, and has more than 30 years of experience in the highly specialized field of drug patent litigation.

He has been described as "one of the best patent litigators since the industry began ". He was counsel in the first litigation ever commenced under the Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations in 1993, and over the past 20 -plus years has continued to represent innovators in precedent setting decisions in PMNOC litigation.

Gunars has also shaped the law through his trial and appellate work in pharmaceutical patent litigation. He has appeared as lead counsel in numerous intellectual property cases before the Ontario, Federal and Supreme courts. His work includes protection of IP assets relating to esomeprazole, omeprazole, ramipril, lisinopril, enoxaparin, trastuzumab, ciprofloxacin, ranitidine, naproxen, metoprolol and doxorubicin, to name a few.

As a licensed pharmacist and having completed a residency in clinical pharmacy, Gunars is very familiar with medical and pharmaceutical matters, including the relevant regulatory issues. Pierre Véron is a member of the Paris Bar.

His 12- lawyer firm, with offices in Paris and Lyon, deals solely in patent litigation, with a special emphasis on international cases. Pierre Véron is the honorary president of the European Patent Lawyers Association (EPLAW), which he founded in 2001 and of the French association of patent litigators. He has taught European patent litigation at the International Centre of Industrial Property Studies (CEIPI) in Strasbourg. Between 2007 and 2012 he served as an expert with the European Commission for the creation of the Unified Patent Court in Europe. He has then been a member of the Drafting Committee of the Rules of Procedure of this court. He now serves as an expert in the Expert panel advising the Preparatory Committee of the Unified Patent court.

Pierre Véron is the editor of Saisie- Contrefaçon, published by leading French publisher Dalloz (third edition, 2012; trilingual version, 2015), and of Concise International and European Intellectual Property Law, published by Kluwer Law International (third edition, 2014). He is also the author of more than 70 other publications on patent litigation.

A former president of an arbitration centre and a former associate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, he has been involved in several arbitration proceedings, either as counsel, arbitrator or chairman of the arbitration panel.
