MEASURING ABIOTIC FEATURES OF AN ECOSYSTEM
AIM & HYPOTHESIS
• AIM: To measure the different abiotic features of an ecosystem.
• HYPOTHESIS: Write your hypothesis here.
EQUIPMENT
• Pond water• Tap water• Test tube• Measuring cylinder• Universal indicator• pH chart• Thermometer• Stopwatch
RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Injury Prevention
Write down all the risks in your experiment.
METHOD
Part 1: Acidity of tap water and pond water
1. Add about 3 mL of tap water in a test tube. Add about 3mL of pond water in another test tube.
2. Add 2 drops of universal indicator in your test tubes.
3. Using a pH chart, work out the pH of your samples. The smaller the number the more acidic it is.
METHOD
Part 2: Measuring air temperature
1. Using a thermometer measure the temperature of air at ground level.
2. Wait 2 minutes before recording your results.
3. Repeat the measurement but this time at bench height. Wait 2 minutes before recording your results.
METHOD
Part 3: Measuring soil temperature
1. Using a thermometer measure the temperature of soil at near the stage. You can do this by inserting the tip very gently into the ground.
2. Wait 2 minutes before recording your results.
3. Repeat the measurement but this time in the oval. Wait 2 minutes before recording your results.
