AIM
• To observe a variety of chemical reactions and make inferences.

RISK ASSESSMENT

METHOD
1. Number the seven test tubes.
2. Carry out the seven reactions below. For each reaction record your observations and make inferences for each of the reactions in your results table.
Reaction 1• Put a piece of magnesium in the test tube and add a small
amount of dilute hydrochloric acid. Don’t forget to point the test tube away from yourself and other people, and wear safety glasses.

METHOD
Reaction 2• One-third fill the test tube with copper sulfate solution. Add a piece
of magnesium.
Reaction 3• One-third fill the test tube with water. Add about a spatula of hypo
crystals and shake to dissolve.
Reaction 4• Add a small amount of copper sulfate solution to a test tube. Then
add a small amount of sodium hydroxide solution (caustic soda) and let the test tube stand for a few minutes.

METHOD
Reaction 5• Add a small amount of barium chloride to a test tube. Then add
a small amount of sulfuric acid.
Reaction 6• Put a marble chip in the test tube and add a small amount of
dilute hydrochloric acid.
Reaction 7• Add a small amount of potassium permanganate solution to a
test tube. Then add 2 or 3 drops of hydrogen peroxide.
