Background to Adventure Racing

Expedition Africa: 5th - 14th June 2015

Our Goal

Adventure racing (also called expedition racing) is a combination of two or more endurance disciplines, including cross-country running (trekking), mountain biking, paddling and climbing and related rope skills. An expedition event can span ten days or more while sprints can be completed in a matter of hours. There is typically no suspension of the clock during races, irrespective of length; elapsed competition time runs concurrently with real time, and competitors must choose if or when to rest. Groups of 4 take on the self-navigation and self-support race together as a team. The AR circuit has traditionally been dominated by older teams, with the average age being between 35-50 years old. That was until we showed up.

Each year, Adventure Racers from all over the world take part in Expedition Africa, a 500km Adventure Race; some casual adventure seekers and others, professional racers. Expedition Africa is an international 500km Adventure Race a part of the AR World Series run and organised in Southern Africa. Each year, the race is organised in a different and unique location and the race involves teams of 4 competitors navigating; trekking, mountain biking and kayaking un-supported through a set un-marked course. The current course will be an approximate 340km Mountain Biking, 120km Trekking (Running/Hiking) and 80km Kayaking on rivers and dams. Expedition Africa (EA2015) will be in Swazi Land.

Our team would like to take part in Expedition Africa. More so, we would like to start a new trend to prove that these races can be done at a younger age. The biggest challenge of the race is staying mentally strong. Mental fitness (and good navigation) is said to be the secret to success for adventure racing, something we as a team have been working on for 2 and a half years now. The professional teams are expected to finish the 500km in 3 days on less than 6 hours sleep. Our primary goal is to finish the race before the 7 day cut off. We know we can do it! We have the necessary fitness, which contrary to belief does not come with youth, but rather from hours of commitment, hard work both mentally and physically.Out oldest team member is 27yrs old and our youngest is 24yrs.
