Expect the Unexpected
“But listen hard and listen good,
life might not go as it should.
But you are young
and your life will be magic.
It will be happy and funny
and sometimes tragic.”

Unexpected
In this unit we will cover:
Building Resilience
Skipper faces a big change
Skipper discovers his boat is
broken. He is told that it has
so many problems that it is
no longer safe to sail. Sadly
it can not be fixed or
mended.
How do you think Skipper
feels on receiving this news?

Building Resilience
Skipper knows from his
journey so far that life is
full of change.
Some changes can be
positive and exciting.
Other changes can bring
disappointment, difficulty
and loss. Sometimes
change is all these things.
Can you think of
a big change in
your life?
Change is a normal part of life
Building Resilience
Just think if there
was no change
there would be
no butterflies
As change can be hard,
Skipper begins to wonder
what the world would be like if
there was never any change.
Think how you have changed
since you were born.
Everything changes at some point
Building Resilience
We all react differently to change
Skipper starts to wonder if he
should continue on the River of
Life given all of its ups and downs.
But he does not want to miss out.
There is so much he still wants to
see, do and discover - new
friendships, grand adventures,
unforgettable experiences and
beautiful places.
What do
you think I
should do?

Building Resilience
Some things in life cannot
be fixed or mended
It’s a rainy day and Skipper
does not feel OK. He is feeling
down about losing his boat
and he is upset that there is
nothing he can do about it.
Some days are just like this.
Building Resilience
Skipper’s friends see he is not
his usual self and ask him if he
is OK? They are concerned
about his wellbeing.
They take the time to really
listen which is often the very
best thing someone can do.
Together they explore a way
to say goodbye to his boat.
Skipper is not alone
What ideas do
you have to
honour your boat?
Building Resilience
After some time Skipper lets his
friends know he is ready to
start building a new boat.
Get help from your back up team
His Back Up team rally round
and gather recycled materials
to help. Skipper brings the
steering wheel, the sails and
the anchor from his old boat.
Together they get to work.

Building Resilience
Skipper is glad that he has learnt
many ways to help support his
mental health and wellbeing.
On this occasion he used ‘Keep
Connected’ and ‘Talk it Over’ but
he also knows all of the tools will
be helpful on his continuing
journey along the River of Life.
Reflect on which has
been the most
helpful for me?
Which has been the
most helpful for you?
Reflecting on the journey
Let us reflect on our 10 tools that help
support our mental health and wellbeing
Building Resilience
We have to do things every day to
look after our bodies, such as
cleaning our teeth. But we also
have to look after our minds.
Our 10 tools will help you to do this.
However you do need to practise
them regularly as you never know
when you might need them.
It is as important to look after our
mental health as our physical health
Building Resilience
Skipper has a video about
someone who has had to use
some of our tools to cope with
some very unexpected events ...
Building Resilience
Skipper now knows that
whatever he faces, whatever
the unexpected twists and turns
in his story of life, he has the
tools to help him cope.
So he lifts up the anchor of his
new boat and sets sail again…
Be ready for anything

The River of Life
Did you ever hear the story of Skipper
Sailing on the river of life?
He’s got problems, fears and feelings. He’s going through a really rough time.
Building Resilience
He’s getting picked on at school.
He’s trapped in a bubble
and he can’t get out.
He talks to a girl in the lunch hall.
She says, “It’s not right
that you’re feeling that way.
Let’s have a talk
and sort it all out”.

Sailing on the river of life?
He’s got problems, fears and feelings,He’s going through a really rough time.
Building Resilience
He’s on his little brown boat.
He hits a rock in the river
and a bit breaks off.
Stressed out his head and panicking.
Feeling so shy and terrified.
He could have kept it all in
But he let it all out.

Building Resilience
So he climbs up a tree
finally happy because he can’t be seen.
He’s shy and he wants
to be left alone.
His friends start a game
of hide and seek.
He hopes to win
for the very first time.
