WHAT’S ON TUESDAY, JUNE 30, 2015 A dozen non-Muslim expats took up the TIES Center’s challenge to fast for a day by applying the Islamic guidelines of abstaining from food, drink and smoking from early dawn until sunset in order to experience the spirit of Ramadan firsthand. Upon regis- tration, guests were invited to reap the bene- fits of fasting, including increased self-disci- pline, patience, God-consciousness, sincerity, compassion, gratitude, and brotherhood, as well as documented medical benefits. The fasters included Filipino, Dutch and Indian fasters who expressed only positivity about their experience. “Before I started fast- ing, I doubted myself and was not confident I could do it” said Jayatheja Swaroop. But after successfully completing the day, he was elated and had increased motivation to meet other challenges in life. Many fasters had some experience in fasting, but it was the first time they completed a total fast from both food and water. “It was easier than I thought” was a common sentiment. “It is important to adopt some of the cul- ture when you go to a foreign country,” said Kasper Cobben from the Netherlands. “For this reason, I am fasting like the people in Kuwait and I am learning Arabic. I would expect peo- ple to learn some Dutch if they came to the Netherlands.” Kasper, a physical therapist, has fasted since the beginning of Ramadan with- out difficulty. By the time the sun set, the fasters expressed feelings of happiness and peace. After sharing a meal prepared at the TIES Center, Bhupinder Singh remarked, “It was a pleasure and honor to ... share experiences and break the fast together with all our broth- ers and sisters. I felt at home like family.” Swaroop agreed: “I’m very, very happy that I have met all of you... It was just like brothers and sisters of a family spending time together. I really enjoyed the first fast of my life in Ramadan.” Ahmed Mubeen encouraged his colleague to undertake the challenge. After viewing a presentation about Ramadan, and sharing iftar and long discussions about many topics, he commented, “I truly appreciate the initiative by TIES and the presentation and arrangement was wonderful. It was amazing to meet every- one from different walks of life, different regions and different faith for a common pur- pose. The event was remarkable. Congratulations to all on their success of com- pleting the Ramadan Challenge.” Each partici- pant was given a certificate of achievement for completing the fasting challenge. Ramadan is a time not only for spiritual growth but also for social solidarity. TIES Center manager Teresa Lesher said, “I feel blessed to have met them. They are an inspi- ration to me. Their efforts to reach out, embrace another culture and meet new peo- ple are much-needed acts of trust and broth- erhood that the world sorely needs.” The mis- sion of the TIES Center is to empower Kuwait’s expats through social and educational services that promote a positive and productive role in society, and to facilitate opportunities for intra- and interfaith interactions that promote social solidarity.
