ased in Germany, the Aldi chain was founded by brothers Karland Theo Albrecht in 1946 when they took over their mother'sstore (which had been in operation since 1913) in the German

town of Essen. The brothers built up a chain of stores until, by 1960,they owned 300 shops, and split the operation into two separategroups that later became Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd. The two operatedindependently, each within specific areas. In 1962 they introduced thename Aldi (a syllabic abbreviation for Albrecht Diskont).

'Self-service' was still a relatively new retail structure in the '60sand Aldi became the first company in Germany to adopt this newretail concept. In 1983, Aldi Süd started chilled distribution depotsand sold fresh products such as cheese, yoghurt and sausages.

Frozen products were introduced in 1998 closely followed by freshmeat, and Aldi continues to keep up with the ever-evolving taste ofmodern consumers.

Internationally, Aldi Nord operates in Denmark, France, theBenelux countries, the Iberian Peninsula, and Poland, while Aldi Südoperates in Ireland, United Kingdom, Hungary, Switzerland,Australia, Austria and Slovenia (Aldi Süd operates as Hofer withinthe latter two countries mentioned). Both Aldi Nord and Aldi Südalso operate in the United States; Aldi Nord is owner of the TraderJoe's chain, while Aldi Süd operates as 'Aldi'. Today, Aldi's growingnetwork has almost 10,000 stores in 18 countries, and an estimatedturnover of more than $78 billion.

The first Aldi store opened in Australia in 2001, and now thecompany operates over 400 stores across New South Wales,Australian Capital Territory, Queensland and Victoria. The majority ofAldi's exclusive brands are sourced from Australian suppliers, and withits planned expansion into SA and WA this year, Aldi is recruiting 400West Australians to work at its 21 confirmed WA locations.

To support these planned stores, Georgiou has delivered the firstdistribution centre in WA for Aldi Australia, after being selected todesign and construct their new Jandakot distribution facility – acontract worth $57 million. Capable of supporting in excess of 70retail stores, the 55,000sqm distribution centre includes refrigeratedareas, ancillary buildings, an office, extensive heavy-duty hardstandareas and landscaping.

Throughout the tender phase, the Georgiou project teaminvested an enormous amount of work into developing aninnovative and cost-competitive design for Aldi. The centre wasdesigned to support low lifecycle costs over a 30-plus year life– a major consideration for Aldi, which has positioned itself

worldwide as an environmentally responsible company. Thiscrucial project for Aldi establishes their presence in WA andforms the basis for their expansion and the distribution of theirproducts locally.

The building has been designed with major internal spansbetween support columns to the client's requirements, and also hassignificant working heights. The facility includes super-flat highquality concrete floors, and a refrigerated store which operates tominus 14 degrees. The distribution centre also incorporates complexintegrated testing and process areas involving refrigerating, fueldistribution, truck wash, power, IT, fire control and ammoniastorage services. adjacent to the high air traffic space of Jandakot Airport, craneoperations (affected during construction) and dust control weretwo of a number of issues Georgiou had to manage during theconstruction of this massive facility.

Challenges aside, the project has many successes. Theconstruction was fast tracked as a 'design & construct' project and

was completed two months ahead of program with early clienthandover and occupation of office space while Georgiou finishedtesting and commissioning. Testament to Georgiou's workmanshipand construction management skills, the completed facility hadminimal defects at handover. Georgiou also experienced nil LostTime Injuries (LTIs) with no major environmental or safety incidents



occurring during the construction period – again a testament tothis builder's experience and management.

The energy efficient solution and innovative design developedfor the facility by Georgiou provided significant benefits and workopportunities to WA consultants, contractors and businessesinvolved in the design, manufacture, fabrication, and the supply ofmaterials and equipment for the project. Now completed, thecentre has exceeded its intended Green Star Ratings which will alsoyield significant cost benefits to the client in relation to

maintenance and operations of the building, as well as providing anenhanced working environment for Aldi's workers and office staff.
