Happy New Year to all immunizing pharmacists from the VCH immunization program team! The purpose of this bulletin is to provide further information on the expanding role of the immunizing pharmacist in vaccine delivery and to summarize the vaccination campaigns currently underway in VCH.
Expanded Access to Publicly Funded Vaccines Now Starting We welcome the interest of pharmacists in participating in the delivery of more publicly funded vaccines. In addition to HPV (Cervarix™), influenza and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccines, pharmacists can now routinely order Td and MMR vaccines. Please use the attached VCH order form and place your orders directly with your local designated community health office. New VCH order form The new VCH order form alphabetically lists vaccines in two categories. These two categories are based on five specific circumstances as outlined in the Pharmacist Access to Publicly Funded Vaccine in British Columbia: Implementation Guideline available at: http://www.health.gov.bc.ca/pharmacare/suppliers.html. The two categories are as follows:
Routine ordering: Category one is for all eligible clients and includes the following vaccines: Td (tetanus diphtheria), MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), pneumococcal polysacharride, influenza, and HPV (Cervarix™).
Vaccines by special request: Category two lists vaccines available by special request on a case-by-case basis only, not for routine stocking of your vaccine fridge, as these vaccines are usually provided by public health in schools or available for limited eligibility criteria. When you order, please provide your client’s age and reason for request. Vaccines by special request include: Hepatitis A and B, HPV-Gardasil®, meningococcal C conjugate, polio, Tdap (Adacel®), Td/IPV (tetanus, diphtheria, polio), and varicella.
Outbreak and post exposure situations: Ordering will be directed by a VCH Medical Health Officer.
Seasonal influenza ordering for 2013/2014: Seasonal flu campaign ordering will be initiated by a separate communication and will include a seasonal influenza order form. This process usually takes place in the first quarter of the year. Annual flu product return details will be announced in the same time period.
Clinical practice and BCCDC Immunization Manual Pharmacists interested in administering more publicly funded vaccines are encouraged to start planning and updating their knowledge about vaccines administered within public vaccination programs. You should be familiar with and follow the general immunization guidelines located in the BCCDC Communicable Disease Control Manual, Chapter 2: Immunization Program at: www.bccdc.ca/dis-cond/comm-manual/default.htm. For your support, a VCH developed adult immunization quick reference tool has also been included. Reporting of immunizations provided by you to clients 5-19 years of age We ask that you submit one report form per client following immunizations given by you to children & youth up to 19 years of age. Reporting this information to public health will allow us to maintain a comprehensive client immunization record in the VCH electronic immunization registry. The registry serves as a source of information for the client and plans future immunizations to keep them protected for all recommended and publicly funded vaccines. This information is collected under and is subject to the provisions of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. Client consent is required before reporting to public health. A new client reporting form is included with this package, please destroy older versions. Please note, you do not need to report on influenza vaccine delivery.

Adverse events following immunization (AEFIs) reporting Report AEFIs via fax to your local community health centre using the Report of Adverse Event Following Immunization form available at: www.bccdc.ca/NR/rdonlyres/0F7FC86E-924C-4232-87DD-F5859E41A7A2/0/Epid_imms_adverse_events_form_june_09.pdf Please pay specific attention to completing the following fields: client’s physician details, interval between vaccination and onset of adverse event (provide duration information in comments), event outcome, and FOI field. As AEFIs are reported under a voluntary scheme, client consent must be received and noted on the FOI box prior to submitting a report to public health.
Vaccine cold chain reminders Vaccine should be stored between 2˚ and 8° C. The vaccine fridge’s maximum and minimum temperatures should be checked twice daily with temperature recorded on the Temperature Form available at: www.bccdc.ca/imm-vac/ForHealthProfessionals/VaccineAndPharmacyServices.htm. Review and follow BC’s Management of Biologicals Guidelines available at: http://www.bccdc.ca/NR/rdonlyres/571A2C6D-8E4A-440E-BB41-35A6725B9FE5/0/SectionVI_ManagementofBiologicals_May.pdf. In the event of a cold chain break, contact your local community health centre for instructions. Vaccination campaigns currently in progress
Influenza vaccination campaign: VCH is experiencing above normal seasonal influenza activity. Circulating strains are covered by the vaccine. Continue to offer vaccine until you hear that the campaign is over; influenza vaccination campaign generally runs until the end of April.
HPV (Cervarix™) vaccination campaign: Continue to offer free vaccine to eligible girls born in the 1991-1993 birth years.
Pertussis outbreak vaccination campaign with Adacel (Tdap) is now over. While you cannot order new inventory from public health, please do use any outstanding inventory in your fridges for previously eligible individuals.
