make use of this exorcism as often aspossible.

It is therefore worthy of propagation.The faithful also may say it as any

approved prayer. (Note: where the symbol (†) is found, inthe prayer of exorcism, the sign of thecross is to be made.) In the Name of The Father and of theSon and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. PRAYER TO SAINT MICHAEL, THEARCHANGEL In the Name of the Father and of the

Son and of the Holy Ghost, Amen.

Only to be usedunder the Authorityof the RomanCatholicBishop. (This is theOfficial Rite for

expelling demons frompeople certified asbeing possessed byauthorized Catholicpriests.) RITE OF EXORCISM The priest delegatedby the Ordinary toperform this officeshould first go toconfession or at leastelicit an act of

contrition, and, if convenient, offer theholy Sacrifice of theMass, and imploreGod's help in other fervent prayers. Hevests in surplice andpurple stole. Havingbefore him the personpossessed (whoshould be bound if there is any danger),he traces the sign of the cross over him,over himself, and thebystanders, and thensprinkles all of themwith holy water. After this he kneels andsays the Litany of theSaints, exclusive of the prayers whichfollow it. All presentare to make theresponses.

LITANY OF THESAINTS The Litany of theSaints is used inordination, FortyHours', processions,and other occasions.Both the Roman Ritualand the RomanPontifical direct thatthe first threeinvocations berepeated. The musicfor this litany is givenin the music

and powers against the rulers of theworld of this darkness, against thespirits of wickedness in the high places(Ephes 6:12). Come to the aid of men,whom GOD created incorruptible, andto the Image of His own Likeness Hemade him (Wis 2:23); and from thetyranny of the devil He bought him at agreat price (Cor 7:23). Fight the battles of the Lord today withthe Army of the Blessed Angels, asonce thou didst fight against lucifer, the

leader of pride, and his apostateangels; and they prevailed not: neither

Her most crafty enemies haveengulfed the Church, the Spouse of theImmaculate Lamb, with sorrows, theyhave drenched her with wormwood; onall her desirable things they have laidtheir wicked hands. Where the See of the Blessed Peter and the Chair of Truth have been setup for the light of the gentiles, therethey have placed the throne of theabomination of their wickedness, sothat, the Pastor having been struck,they may also be able to scatter theflock. Therefore, O' thouunconquerable Leader, be present withthe people of GOD and against thespiritual wickedness which are burstingin upon them; and bring them thevictory. The Holy Church venerates thee as itsGuardian and Patron; and it glories inthe fact that thou art its Defender against the wicked powers of earth andhell. To thee the Lord has assigned thesouls of the redeemed to be placed inHeavenly bliss. Beseech the GOD of Peace to crush satan under our feet,that he may no more be able to holdmen captive and to harm the Church.Offer our prayers in the sight of theMost High, so that the mercies of the

Lord may quickly come to our aid, thatthou mayest seize the dragon, the

Hence confiding in thy protection andguardianship, by the sacred authority of our ministry, we confidently andsecurely begin the task in the Name of Jesus Christ our GOD and Lord, of driving away the attacks of diabolicaldeceit.

The priest lays hishand on the head of the sick person,saying:

to St. John(John 1:1-14)



As he says theseopening words hesigns himself and thepossessed on thebrow, lips, and breast.

When time began, theWord was there, andthe Word was face toface with God, and theWord was God. ThisWord, when timebegan, was face toface with God. Allthings came into beingthrough Him, andwithout Him therecame to be not onething that has come to

be. In Him was life,and the life was thelight of men. The lightshines in thedarkness, and thedarkness did not layhold of it. There cameupon the scene aman, a messenger from God, whosename was John. Thisman came to givetestimony to testify in

behalf of the light thatall might believethrough him. He wasnot himself the light;he only was to testifyin behalf of the light.Meanwhile the truelight, which illuminesevery man, wasmaking its entranceinto the world. He wasin the world, and theworld came to be

through Him, and theworld did notacknowledge Him. Hecame into His home,and His own peopledid not welcome Him.But to as many aswelcomed Him Hegave the power tobecome children of God those whobelieve in His name;who were born not of

blood, or of carnaldesire, or of man's will;



no, they were born of God. (Genuflect here.)

And the Word becameman and lived amongus; and we havelooked upon His glory

such a glory as befitsthe Father's only-begotten Son full of grace and truth!

to St. Mark(Mark 16:15-18)

At that time Jesus saidto His disciples: "Gointo the whole worldand preach the Gospelto all creation. He thatbelieves and isbaptized will be saved;he that does notbelieve will becondemned. And inthe way of proofs of

their claims, thefollowing willaccompany those whobelieve: in my namethey will drive outdemons; they willspeak in new tongues;they will take upserpents in their hands, and if theydrink somethingdeadly, it will not hurtthem; they will lay their

hands on the sick, andthese will recover."



A Lesson from theholy Gospel accordingto St. Luke(Luke 10:17-20)

At that time the

seventy-two returnedin high spirits."Master," they said,"even the demons aresubject to us becausewe use your name!""Yes," He said tothem, "I was watchingSatan fall like lightningthat flashes fromheaven. But mind: it isI that have given youthe power to tread

upon serpents andscorpions, and breakthe dominion of theenemy everywhere;nothing at all caninjure you. Just thesame, do not rejoice inthe fact that the spiritsare subject to you, butrejoice in the fact thatyour names areengraved in heaven."

A Lesson from theholy Gospel accordingto St. Luke(Luke 11:14-22)

At that time Jesus wasdriving out a demon,and this particular demon was dumb.The demon was drivenout, the dumb manspoke, and the crowdswere enraptured. Butsome among the

people remarked: "Heis a tool of Beelzebul,and that is how hedrives out demons!"

Another group,intending to test Him,demanded of Him aproof of His claims, tobe shown in the sky.He knew their inmostthoughts. "Anykingdom torn by civilstrife," He said to

them, "is laid in ruins;and house tumbles



upon house. So, too, if Satan is in revoltagainst himself, howcan his kingdom last,since you say that Idrive out demons as a

tool of Beelzebul. Andfurthermore: if I driveout demons as a toolof Beelzebul, whosetools are your pupilswhen they do thedriving out? Therefore,

judged by them, youmust standcondemned. But, if, onthe contrary, I driveout demons by thefinger of God, then,

evidently the kingdomof God has by thistime made its way toyou. As long as amighty lord in fullarmor guards hispremises, he is inpeaceful possessionof his property; butshould one mightier than he attack andovercome him, he willstrip him of his armor,

on which he hadrelied, and distributethe spoils taken fromhim."

Almighty Lord, Wordof God the Father,Jesus Christ, God andLord of all creation;who gave to your holyapostles the power totramp underfootserpents andscorpions; who along

with the other mandates to work



miracles was pleasedto grant them theauthority to say:"Depart, you devils!"and by whose mightSatan was made to fall

from heaven likelightning; I humbly callon your holy name infear and trembling,asking that you grantme, your unworthyservant, pardon for allmy sins, steadfastfaith, and the power -supported by your mighty arm - toconfront withconfidence and

resolution this crueldemon. I ask thisthrough you, JesusChrist, our Lord andGod, who are comingto judge both the livingand the dead and theworld by fire.

Next he makes thesign of the cross over

himself and the onepossessed, places theend of the stole on thelatter's neck, and,putting his right handon the latter's head, hesays the following inaccents filled withconfidence and faith:

I cast you out, uncleanspirit, along with everySatanic power of theenemy, every spectrefrom hell, and all your fell companions; in thename of our LordJesus +Christ. Begoneand stay far from thiscreature of God.+ For it is He whocommands you, He

who flung youheadlong from theheights of heaven intothe depths of hell. It isHe who commandsyou, He who oncestilled the sea and thewind and the storm.Hearken, therefore,and tremble in fear,Satan, you enemy of the faith, you foe of the human race, you

begetter of death, yourobber of life, youcorrupter of justice,you root of all evil andvice; seducer of men,betrayer of thenations, instigator of envy, font of avarice,fomentor of discord,author of pain andsorrow. Why, then, doyou stand and resist,knowing as you must

that Christ the Lordbrings your plans to



nothing? Fear Him,who in Isaac wasoffered in sacrifice, inJoseph sold intobondage, slain as thepaschal lamb,

crucified as man, yettriumphed over thepowers of hell. (Thethree signs of thecross which follow aretraced on the brow of the possessedperson). Begone,then, in the name of the Father, + and of the Son, + and of theHoly + Spirit. Giveplace to the Holy Spirit

by this sign of the holy+ cross of our LordJesus Christ, wholives and reigns withthe Father and theHoly Spirit, God,forever and ever.

look down in pity onthis your servant, N.,now in the toils of theunclean spirit, nowcaught up in thefearsome threats of man's ancient enemy,sworn foe of our race,who befuddles andstupefies the humanmind, throws it intoterror, overwhelms itwith fear and panic.

Repel, 0 Lord, thedevil's power, break



asunder his snaresand traps, put theunholy tempter toflight. By the sign +(on the brow) of your name, let your servant

you monster, give wayto Christ, in whom youfound none of your works. For He hasalready stripped you of your powers and laidwaste your kingdom,bound you prisoner and plundered your weapons. He has castyou forth into the outer darkness, whereeverlasting ruin awaits

you and your abettors.To what purpose doyou insolently resist?To what purpose doyou brazenly refuse?For you are guiltybefore almighty God,whose laws you havetransgressed. You areguilty before His Son,our Lord Jesus Christ,whom you presumedto tempt, whom you
