En 1878, Vincent van Gogh, âgé de 25 ans, arrive dans la région belge du Borinage pour y travailler comme évangéliste protestant auprès des communautés minières rurales. Il échoue dans cette vocation et, après des mois de remise en question, décide, en août 1880, de devenir artiste. Cette passionnante publication est la première à s'intéresser au séjour de Van Gogh dans le Borinage et à son développement artistique dans les années qui suivent, au cours desquelles il crée ses première oeuvres originales. Elle inclut des extraits de la correspondance de Van Gogh avec son frère Theo, dans laquelle il décrit son désir de dessiner, ainsi que des gravures réalisées d'après des oeuvres d'artistes comme Jean-François Millet. L'examen de la production de Van Gogh après son départ du Borinage montre que les motifs qu'il y a explorés - maisons rustiques, ouvriers et travaux agricoles, nature-l'influenceront tout au long de sa carrière.

La naissance d'un artiste

In 1878, toen hij 25 was, arriveerde Vincent van Gogh in de Belgische mijnstreek de Borinage om er als protestants evangelist tegaan werken. Dit werd echter een mislukking en na een maandenlange periode van geestelijk zoeken, besloot hij in augustus 1880 om kunstenaar te worden. Deze fascinerende publicatie focust voor het eerst op Van Goghs periode in de Borinage en zijn ontwikkeling in de jaren meteen daarna, toen hij zijn eerste oorspronkelijke werken schiep. Er zijn fragmenten opgenomen van de correspondentie met zijn broer Theo waarin hij zijn drang om te schetsen beschrijft en tekeningen die hij maakte naar meesterwerken van kunstenaars als Jean-François Millet. Uit de analyse van Van Goghs werk dat tot stand kwam nadat hij de Borinage had verlaten, blijkt hoe motieven die hij daar ontwikkelde - eenvoudige huizen, arbeiders, landbouw, natuur - uitgroeiden tot thema's die steeds weer terugkeren in zijn latere oeuvre.

Young Belgian Talent introduced by FoMu

Annaba lies in eastern Algeria, near the Tunisian border. Marie-Noëlle Boutin visited the city several times between 2012 and 2013 to photograph young Algerians there. She initially went to the Badji Mokhtar University campus in Sidi Amar, a town on the outskirts of Annaba. The young people there have taken possession of the campus's green areas and turned them into places of freedom where they can meet up, boys and girls alike, and live out their love affairs undisturbed by what society might think. It is a haven of peace, where the students seem to live their youthfulness to the full. On her second trip, Marie-Noëlle Boutin sought to capture the atmosphere in the city of Annaba. The difficulties of shooting, connected with having to request the authorities' permission to take photographs, obliged her to wander around the city's perimeter. These are the very places where young people go when they want to escape the weight of Algerian society, anchored in its archaic traditions. Between a desire for freedom and repressed frustration, young Algerians aspire to a more serene future. In Annaba, facing out to sea, each of them projects their hopes.

"De goden zijn schijngestalten, dat hebben we al eeuwen lang begrepen. Ze zijn enkel te benaderen via het gouden masker waarmee wij hen hebben getooid en via de namen waarmee wij hen op plechtige wijze kunnen vereren. Gefascineerd door de schittering van het tijdloze goud, hebben wij het zo aan boord gelegd dat de maskers van de koningen steeds de rituele substitutie zijn van de bovennatuurlijke wreedaardigheid van de goddelijke blik of van of zijn afgesmeekt mededogen. De met goud beklede koning is de aardse stand-in van het gouden masker van de goden. Gesteld in semiotische termen is hij, tegelijk, een protocollair 'symbool' en een narratieve 'figuur'. Vergeleken met de schijngestalten van de goden is hij een 'dubbel-gestalte'. Dergelijke dubbelgestalte - 'una persona, duae naturae / één persoon, twee naturen' - kan niets anders dan een mythologisch simulacrum zijn.

Ghent-based international art space Zebrastraat shelters several functions, next to a residence and a centre for the local economy. The building plays a pivotal role in the research and promotion of contemporary art, with a strong emphasis on the interaction between technological and artistic research. To exhibit this ongoing practice Zebrastraat established the Update biennial, paired with the New Technological Art Award (NTAA). The latter is in its fifth edition and offers artists the possibility to show their work in a valuable context. After a call for papers a selection of 21 works was made out of over 350 submissions, selected by an international jury under the supervision of curator Isolde De Buck. During the exhibition (from November 8th - 23rd 2014) these new works are displayed in dialogue with the work of settled artists and next to the presentation of recent technological discoveries.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder's Fall of the Rebel Angels is the first comprehensive book on one of the most cherished masterpieces of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels. It argues that with his Fall of the Rebel Angels (1562) Pieter Bruegel (died 1569) turned a traditional devotional theme into an innovative commentary on his own time, and situates the painting within the early modern cultures of knowledge and collecting. More particularly, it exposes that many of the hybrid falling angels are carefully composed of naturalia and artificialia, as they were collected in art and curiosity cabinets of the time. Bruegel's much noted emulation of Jheronymus Bosch was thus only part of his wider interest in collecting, inspecting, and imitating the artistic and natural world around him. This prompts an examination of the world at the time that Bruegel painted the Fall of the Rebel Angels: locally, in the urban and courtly centers of Antwerp and Brussels on the eve of the Dutch revolt, and globally, as the discovery of the New World irreversibly transformed the European perception of art and nature. Painted as a tale of hubris and pride, Bruegel's masterpiece becomes a meditation on the potential and danger of man's pursuit of art, knowledge and politics.

Sonia Delaunay (1885 1979) is one of the most important female artists of the early twentieth century, whose contribution to the European avant-garde was fundamental.
