Pole Position Polish Art in Britain 1939–1989

Until 28 Jun 2014Graves Gallery

Pole Position is a new exhibition which sheds light on a neglected chapter in the story of British art.

Created from the private collection of Matthew Bateson, Pole Position features the work of Polish émigré artists forced to flee mainland Europe during the Second World War. Despite working alongside many of the British artists who are so celebrated today, their contribution has often been overlooked. Providing a perfect parallel to Sheffield’s stunning 20th Century British art collection, Pole Position offers a unique opportunity to see these powerful and evocative works on public display for the first time.

Exhibition supported by Polish Cultural Institute and Polish Heritage Society (UK).

Printing SheffieldUntil 15 Jun 2014Millennium Gallery

Printmaking in Sheffield is alive and kicking. The city now has an active group of artists employing diverse printing techniques with equally vibrant results. From James Green’s colourful linocuts, to Kid Acne’s witty silkscreen prints, printing has given a new generation of artists their own means of production.

This brand new exhibition reflects the diversity and abundance of contemporary printing in Sheffield and includes works by Jo Peel, James Green, Phlegm, Florence Blanchard, Kid Acne and Paul Morrison. Printing Sheffield forms a snapshot of the current scene and includes works for sale so that you too can participate in the print revolution.

Sheffield & the First World WarUntil 1 Mar 2015Weston Park

Recording Britain3 Apr–2 Nov 2014Millennium Gallery

2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, a conflict which impacted on millions of people all over the world. As museums around the UK mark the Centenary, this new exhibition explores Sheffield’s experience of a global tragedy.

Sheffield and the First World War draws on the first hand experiences of Sheffield’s people, both at home and on military service, and tells their stories through objects and documents from the city’s collections. From poignant personal possessions, to mementoes brought back to Sheffield from the front, the exhibition will illustrate the very local and personal impact of the war to end all wars.

Exhibition supported by The Church Burgesses Educational Foundation and the Sheffield Town Trust.

In the winter of 1939 an extraordinary art project was begun. Beneath the spectres of invasion and aerial bombing, the Scheme for Recording the Changing Face of Britain rapidly commissioned artists to paint ‘places and buildings of characteristic national interest’.

The resulting collection of over 1500 paintings created a remarkable, yet highly selective, snapshot of a fast-changing country. Now held by the V&A, highlights from the Recording Britain collection will tour to Sheffield for the first time in 2014.

Recording Britain features paintings by prolific artists such as John Piper and Kenneth Rowntree, alongside work by contemporary artists including Richard Long, David Nash and Laura Oldfield Ford.

Drawing the Line10 July–16 Aug 2014Graves Gallery

For centuries, drawing has been used as a tool to communicate ideas, express ourselves and make sense of the world. From documenting archaeology and natural science to the first preliminary sketches of artists and designers, it is used both to problem solve and as a starting point, where the imagination can run wild.

This exhibition brings together drawings from across Sheffield’s collections representing art, history and science. Works featured include an architectural study by John Ruskin, metalwork designs by Joyce Himsworth, Thomas Bateman’s book ‘Illustrations of Antiquity’ and Walter Sickert’s study for the painting ‘La Parisienne’.

Alongside the displays, artist Paul Evans will be creating new work for Museums Sheffield inspired by nature. This exhibition is part of Drawing the Summer (see page 20).

Recording Britain Now28 Jun–12 Oct 2014Millennium Gallery

April–September

Museums Sheffield is thrilled to host the second John Ruskin Prize for art in 2014. Responding to the theme of Recording Britain Now, and inspired by the Recording Britain exhibition on tour from the V&A, the Prize is open to both amateur and professional artists.

Recording Britain Now will feature the work of the Ruskin Prize winner and 14 runners-up. Drawings, paintings, prints and mixed-media work will present a fresh view of urban or rural environments over 70 years since the original Recording Britain project sought to do the same.

The John Ruskin Prize 2014 is part of the Campaign for Drawing and is a collaboration with the Guild of St George.

Made in China: An Imperial Ming Vase12 Jul–5 Oct 2014Weston Park

Picture the Poet3 Sep–29 Nov 2014Graves Gallery

In the early 15th century, China was a global superpower and the Ming dynasty’s imperial courts led taste in arts and culture. Discover how and why this iconic blue-and-white porcelain vase, on tour from the British Museum, represents a crucial period in China’s history. Sheffield-based artists Jane Elliot and Jonathan Wilkinson have been commissioned to create contemporary work for display alongside the vase.

A British Museum Tour, supported by BP.

Benjamin Zephaniah, Simon Armitage and Carol Ann Duffy are just a few examples of the poets included in this new touring exhibition from the National Portrait Gallery.

Picture the Poet brings together images of some of the most important poets of our times by equally well-known and respected photographers living today, providing an insight into the people who have crafted images for our imaginations out of words. The portraits cover a variety of themes including sense of place, love, loss, identity and struggle and include over six decades of artistic production from the 1950s to the present day.

Yorkshire in Yellow

31 May–7 SepMillennium Gallery

To celebrate the Grand Départ of the Tour de France this summer we’ve teamed up with Made North to create an original showcase for Yorkshire’s creative talent.

There are few cycling accolades as prized and revered as the ‘Maillot Jaume’, or yellow jersey. Yorkshire in Yellow invites contemporary artists, designers, and creatives with a Yorkshire connection to design their own tribute to the ‘Maillot Jaume’ in the form of a yellow T shirt for display in the Millennium Gallery. Budding designers can contribute their own ideas at museums-sheffield.org.uk

Yorkshire in Yellow is part of the official Yorkshire Festival 2014 and is a partnership between Museums Sheffield and Made North, a platform for northern designer/makers.

Natural Connections

From 24 MayWeston Park

Museums Sheffield has partnered with Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust to create a new permanent display at Weston Park museum. Using Greno Wood in north Sheffield as an example, Natural Connections looks at how wildlife and green spaces all connect to each other. Check out our giant food web, watch a cartoon showing why woods are important and get up close and personal to creepy crawlies using the 3D microscope. Natural Connections has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Our City, Our Objects

10 May–5 OctWeston Park

This display brings together 10 objects from Sheffield’s collections which each tell a different story about the city. Selected by members of the public through online nominations, events and visits to the Museums Sheffield store, they range from a beautiful medieval tile from Beauchief Abbey to a contemporary handcrafted Bowie knife. Our City, Our Objects is a collaboration between Museums Sheffield, the Sheffield Visual Art Group and the University of Sheffield.

Little Gems

28 Apr–1 Sep Millennium Gallery

Since 2005, thanks to the support of Sheffield’s Assay Office, emerging designer-silversmiths from Sheffield’s Yorkshire Artspace have had the chance to exhibit their work at the Millennium Gallery through the Little Gems programme. This year silversmith and jeweller Jen Ricketts will show a new piece celebrating Sheffield’s industrial heritage and its skyline, old and new.

50th Anniversary of Sheffield Biological Records Centre

8 July–Sept 2014 Weston Park

2014 sees the 50th anniversary of Sheffield’s Biological Records Centre. The organisation, originally founded at Weston Park museum and now run by Sheffield City Ecology Unit, records sightings of wildlife in our region. This display, put together in partnership with the Ecology Unit, will commemorate and highlight the work of this unsung hero of local wildlife and green space conservation.

The Wonder of Work: Prints of War & Industry by Joseph Pennell 5 Jul–13 DecGraves Gallery

This display of prints by American artist Joseph Pennell shows the power and scale of the First World War munitions works. Pennell captured the major industrial changes which transformed England’s land and cityscapes in 1916. These lithograph prints are a unique artistic record of war work on the Home Front and show men and women making munitions in the new iron mines and weapons factories.

Traditionally comics finish touring the country by releasing a DVD. Mark Thomas finishes his with an art exhibition. In the course of a year Mark attempted to commit 100 acts of minor dissent. Some were successful, some were silly, some failed and some were beautiful: the Art of Dissent is a celebration of the project.

Please book in advance on 0114 278 2655 or email [email protected].

Mark Thomas celebrates the end of his mission to commit 100 acts of minor dissent with a talk about the ideas and inspirations behind the show they inspired and the resulting exhibition. A Q & A will follow.

Drawing the Summer

5 May–7 SeptemberMillennium Gallery & Graves Gallery

Anyone can draw, it just takes practice. This summer Museums Sheffield is asking the city to reacquaint itself with this ancient (and handy) skill.

Drawing the Summer is a programme of events, workshops and masterclasses, along with talks by a host of people for whom drawing is an essential skill, from architects and designers to medics and musicians. A new drawing trail will encourage you to explore Sheffield and draw things you may never have noticed before.

Visitors to the Millennium and Graves galleries can enjoy inspiring drawings and brand new works from Kyra Cane, Paul Evans, Neil Webb and Roanna Wells.

Keep an eye on www.museums-sheffield.org.uk for programme details. It’s time to pick up your pencil. Paul Evans, Leviathan. Photo by Dan Sumption
