About the Exhibition
Derek McLarty - After Hours
Derek McLarty was raised in London, Ontario where he developed an early interest in all forms
of visual art. He studied painting, drawing, printmaking as well as art history at the University of
Western Ontario before graduating with an Honours Visual Arts degree. His paintings take an
intimate look at ordinary spaces. Devoid of the human subject his works elicit quiet and the
notion of privacy as well as reference the everyday personal items most of us come into contact
with on a daily basis. It has been the tradition of art to freeze these object and scenes for study
and reflection.
Throughout history there has been an emphasis on how artists were able to depict how
light is reflected through or off objects. In Derek McLarty’s new series of works from the
exhibition entitled After Hours, he offers another way of seeing light as it penetrates darkness or
casts a shadow across a wall or floor. His penchant for using glossy or glass surfaces create
scintillating effects that make us think about time and place. These realistic approaches are part
of a larger Canadian tradition, which includes Mary Pratt whose mastery of observation helps us
understand and contemplate domestic objects of everyday use. In this new series of work,
McLarty’s attention is directed, not only on the play of light, but also material and the artwork as
a commodity object. In the work “Tablecloth” for instance, the oils are applied directly on linen
drawing an association between material application, use and representation. In “Gardners” we
see the familiar front of the auction house depicted as a stalwart feature of the London cityscape
– a repository of objects (many of them artworks) that end up there for resale.
In many other works institutional spaces play a role: boardrooms and classrooms, as
places of instruction and decision making, set the stage to initiate and direct the process of
painting itself. One sometimes wonders who is creating the work, the designers of such spaces
and objects or McLarty who is most certainly thinking of the craft and use of such objects and
spaces. In 900 Richmond the portico that leads into the building is a transitional space, a
threshold into or out of two very different realities. If you look closely you can see that the
framing of the picture is made up of different architectural traditions namely the classical revival
of columns and arches, but the text “900 Richmond” comes directly from 20th century design.
McLarty thereby mixes histories and creates a situation where we might think of a painting as an
artefact marking its place in the assemblage of image and object making.
